Universal Studios Hollywood is a premier destination for movie lovers and thrill-seekers alike. This guide provides essential tips and strategies to help you make the most of your visit, from navigating the park to enjoying its top attractions.

Visit Strategy

Early Park Entry (Rope Drop)
Arriving early gives you a significant advantage. For example, heading straight to popular attractions like “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” can often allow you to line up up to 15 minutes before the park officially opens. This strategy helps you experience some of the busiest rides with minimal wait times. During my recent visit, I was able to ride “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” before the park opened, freeing up the rest of the morning for other attractions.

Stay Until Park Closing
Make sure to stay until the park closes, especially if visiting during off-peak times. The crowd usually thins out about an hour to two hours before closing, giving you a chance to experience popular areas like Super Nintendo World with shorter waits. For instance, I enjoyed all the games and faced Bowser Jr. from 6 to 7 p.m. during an off-season visit.

Best Time to Visit

Seasonal Recommendations
Avoid peak periods such as spring break and major holidays. Even during summer, which is typically busy, wait times can be manageable. During my visit in July, I was able to enjoy every ride without an Express Pass.

Current Wait Times
As of February, wait times for popular attractions vary. For example, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” had a 35-minute wait, “Simpsons” was around 40 minutes due to pre-show elements, and “Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge” had an 80-minute wait—much better compared to the three-hour waits during peak times last year.

Duration of Visit

Unlike Universal Studios Orlando, which has multiple parks and a water park, Universal Studios Hollywood is a single park with around 12 rides. You can comfortably experience all major attractions in one day. If you’re a first-timer or visiting during busy periods, consider planning for a second day to fully explore.

Fast Pass Options and Services

Express Pass
While an Express Pass can be useful, it’s not always necessary, especially during off-peak times. You can purchase one on-site if needed, but note that it does not cover “Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge.”

Child Switch and Single Rider
Universal Studios offers services like Child Switch and Single Rider lines. Child Switch allows one party member to wait with a child while others ride, then swap without waiting in line again. Single Rider lines, available for rides like “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” allow quicker access but split up your group.

Experience: Guests journey through iconic scenes from the Harry Potter series, including the Great Hall and the Forbidden Forest. The ride utilizes motion simulation and 3D effects to make you feel as though you’re flying on a broomstick alongside Harry and his friends.

Tips: To avoid long wait times, visit early in the day or use early park entry. The queue itself is an experience, featuring elaborate theming and interactive elements.

  1. Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge
Overview: This ride brings the popular Nintendo video game to life, allowing you to race against Bowser and other characters in a high-tech karting experience.

Experience: The attraction features a mix of physical ride elements and augmented reality, providing a thrilling and interactive race through the Mushroom Kingdom. Its advanced technology and engaging gameplay have made it a fan favorite.

Tips: Expect long wait times due to its popularity. Purchase an early entry ticket for Super Nintendo World to enjoy this ride with minimal wait or consider riding during off-peak hours.

  1. Jurassic World – The Ride
Overview: A thrilling water ride based on the Jurassic Park film franchise, offering an exciting and sometimes wet adventure.

Experience: The ride features a journey through a dinosaur-themed world, culminating in a dramatic encounter with a massive Indominus Rex. The front row of the boat is particularly prone to getting soaked, so if you prefer to stay dry, choose a seat in the back.

Tips: To avoid getting drenched, sit in the back row. This ride can be a great way to cool off on a hot day, but be prepared for the possibility of getting wet.

  1. Studio Tour
Overview: The Studio Tour is one of Universal Studios Hollywood’s original attractions, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s film and television productions.

Experience: Guests board trams that take them through various soundstages and outdoor sets. Highlights include famous movie sets, special effects demonstrations, and the chance to see active filming locations. The tour includes the King Kong 360 3-D experience, offering an intense, immersive encounter with the iconic monster.

Tips: To avoid long wait times, visit the Studio Tour mid-morning. The tour lasts about an hour, so plan accordingly and use the restroom before you start.

  1. Super Nintendo World
Overview: This vibrant and interactive land brings the beloved Nintendo universe to life with immersive environments and engaging gameplay.

Experience: The area features various attractions and games that utilize Power Up Bands. These bands allow guests to participate in interactive challenges and collect digital coins throughout the land. Key highlights include the Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge and the opportunity to face off against Bowser Jr.

Tips: Purchase your Power Up Bands in advance from CityWalk to save time and avoid long lines in the park. The land can get crowded, so visiting early in the day or during off-peak hours is recommended for a better experience.
