Christmas Markets in Zurich 2026
During the Christmas season, Zurich changes completely. First, light shows and winter venues begin appearing in early November. Then, in the second half of the month, the main Christmas markets open, the lights come on along Bahnhofstrasse, and the Old Town turns into one long evening route filled with festive stalls, music, and the smell of hot mulled wine.
Most of Zurich’s Christmas markets in 2026 open on November 19. The majority close on December 23–24, although some winter events continue after Christmas.

Polarzauber at Zurich Main Station
- Dates: November 19 – December 24, 2026
Polarzauber takes place inside Zurich Main Station and is considered the largest indoor Christmas market in Switzerland.
It is a convenient place to start exploring festive Zurich: the market is right in the city center, unaffected by the weather, and works well even for a short stop between a train journey and an evening walk.
The main highlights are the large Lindt Christmas tree, festive lighting, food areas, and more than a hundred market stalls.

- Dates: November 19 – December 23, 2026
- Location: Sechseläutenplatz
Bellevue Noël is a new Christmas venue near the Zurich Opera House and the lake.
At the center of the market is a large wooden Christmas wreath around 50 meters long that visitors can walk through. Around it are stalls selling food, drinks, local products, and gifts.
There is plenty of open space here, so the market feels less crowded than the narrow streets of the Old Town. A large fondue chalet also makes it a good place to end the evening.
Dörfli in Niederdorf
- Dates: November 19 – December 23, 2026
The Christmas market in Niederdorf spreads through the streets of Zurich’s Old Town.
Its biggest advantage is the setting. Historic facades, narrow lanes, small shops, and Christmas lights create exactly the kind of atmosphere many people come to European cities for in December.
There is also a small children’s ice rink in the Rosenhof area.

Münsterhof is a quieter, more polished Christmas market in Zurich’s historic center.
The focus here is on local brands and producers, which makes it especially interesting for visitors who actually want to shop rather than just walk around.
Fraumünster is nearby, and the square itself is surrounded by historic buildings, so the market fits easily into a walk through the Old Town.
Zürcher Weihnachtsallee
- Dates: November 19 – December 23, 2026
- Location: Europaallee
Weihnachtsallee is one of Zurich’s most modern Christmas venues.
There is less of a traditional old-fashioned market feel here and more of an urban food-market atmosphere. You will find stalls serving dishes from different cuisines, seasonal drinks, fondue, and street food.

Singing Christmas Tree

- Location: Werdmühleplatz
The Singing Christmas Tree is hard to describe as a typical Christmas market.
The main attraction is a large multi-level stage shaped like a Christmas tree, where choirs perform. Around it are small stalls selling drinks, food, and gifts.
It is best to come specifically for one of the performances. Without the choir, the experience feels completely different.
Things to Do in Zurich Beyond the Christmas Markets
Illuminarium
- Dates: November 5 – December 30, 2026
- Location: Swiss National Museum
Illuminarium takes place in the courtyard of the Landesmuseum, right next to Zurich Main Station.
Light shows are projected onto the walls of the historic building, while food areas and bars are set up around the courtyard. Part of the venue is free to enter, while some multimedia shows require tickets.
It is a good option for the evening if you want a change of pace after visiting several traditional Christmas markets.
If you are coming with children, earlier sessions are usually more convenient, before the venue gets too crowded.

- Start time: 6:00 PM
Lichterschwimmen takes place on just one evening. Hundreds of small illuminated boats are released onto the Limmat River and slowly float through the city center.
It is a short event, but a very atmospheric one. If your trip dates match, it is worth adjusting your evening route slightly to include it.
Samichlaus Parade
- Date: November 29, 2026
The festive Samichlaus parade starts at Werdmühleplatz and continues along Bahnhofstrasse toward Bürkliplatz.
For visitors, it is a chance to see one of Zurich’s local winter traditions. For children, it is also a much livelier experience than simply walking from one market stall to another.
Winterzauber Uetliberg
- Dates: November 6, 2026 – January 31, 2027
Winterzauber on Uetliberg stands out because it continues much longer than most Christmas markets in the city center.
There are festive lights, winter drinks, seasonal food, and various activities.
This is especially useful to keep in mind if you are visiting Zurich after December 24, when the main Christmas markets in the city have already closed.

Winterthur
- Dates: November 18 – December 23, 2026
Winterthur is about half an hour from Zurich and works well for a half-day trip.
The winter market takes place at Teuchelweiherplatz, with stalls selling gifts, handmade products, hot drinks, and seasonal food.
Winterthur’s main advantage is the combination of the market and the city itself. You can walk around the center, stop for a mulled wine, browse the festive stalls, and return to Zurich in the evening.
Rapperswil-Jona
- Dates: December 3–6, December 9–13, and December 17–20, 2026
Rapperswil is worth visiting for the combination of its Christmas market, Old Town, and setting on Lake Zurich.
The festive market does not run continuously throughout the month, but instead takes place over several separate periods. The largest program is held from December 9 to 13, while the market is smaller on the other dates.
The Old Town, the castle overlooking the lake, and the Christmas lights make Rapperswil especially beautiful toward the evening.
Einsiedeln
- Dates: November 27 – December 6, 2026
Einsiedeln’s Christmas market takes place in front of the famous Benedictine abbey and continues along Hauptstrasse.
The stalls sell handmade crafts, decorations, local products, sweets, and hot drinks. But the biggest impression comes not from the stalls themselves, but from their setting against the huge Baroque facade of the abbey.
The square looks especially impressive after dark, when the Christmas lights come on.
