Christmas Markets in Switzerland 2026
The Christmas season in Switzerland begins as early as the second half of November. Major markets take place in Zurich, Basel, Bern, Montreux, Geneva, and Lausanne, while smaller fairs in Alpine towns sometimes last only a few days. Most markets close on December 23 or 24, so it is worth checking your travel dates in advance.

Zurich
Zurich has several different Christmas markets to explore.
Polarzauber
- Dates: November 19-December 24, 2026
- Location: Zurich HB main train station
Polarzauber at Zurich HB runs from November 19 to December 24, 2026. It is a large indoor market with more than 100 shopping and food stalls, a Lindor Christmas tree, and the Fondue Express.

- Location: Sechseläutenplatz
Bellevue Noël takes place from November 19 to December 23 at Sechseläutenplatz. In 2026, it introduces a new concept that replaces the former Wienachtsdorf. The main feature is a huge Christmas wreath measuring around 50 meters in diameter. The square also has market stalls and a large fondue chalet.
Niederdorf Christmas Market
- Dates: November 19-December 23, 2026
- Location: Niederdorf, Old Town
The Niederdorf Christmas Market is open from November 19 to December 23. Its stalls line the streets of the Old Town, so this is a good place for a relaxed walk among historic buildings, shops, and cafés.
Basel
Basel Christmas Market
- Dates: November 26-December 23, 2026
- Locations: Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz
- Opening hours: Daily, 11:00-20:30
Basel Christmas Market spreads across Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz in the historic city center. Together, the two squares host around 150 wooden stalls.
Barfüsserplatz is usually livelier and more focused on food, while Münsterplatz stands out for its setting next to Basel Minster and its large Christmas tree. One local sweet worth trying is Basler Läckerli, traditional gingerbread-style biscuits made with honey, nuts, and spices.
The market is open daily from 11:00 to 20:30.

Montreux Noël
- Dates: November 20-December 24, 2026
- Location: Lake Geneva promenade
Montreux Noël runs along the Lake Geneva waterfront. Around 150 wooden chalets sell gifts, handmade products, food, and hot drinks.
The market’s main attraction is the Flying Santa. Several times a day, Santa Claus flies above the promenade with the lake and mountains in the background.
If you are visiting with children, you can also head up to Rochers-de-Naye, where Santa’s House is located at an altitude of 2,042 meters. It is best to book train tickets and admission in advance.
Bern
Bern has three main Christmas market locations.
Waisenhausplatz
- Dates: November 27-December 24, 2026
Waisenhausplatz is open from November 27 to December 24. Here you will find traditional Christmas gifts, decorations, sweets, and seasonal products.
Münsterplatz
- Dates: November 28-December 24, 2026
Münsterplatz runs from November 28 to December 24. This market focuses more on handmade goods and products from local craftspeople.
Berner Sternenmarkt
- Dates: November 19-December 27, 2026
- Location: Kleine Schanze park
Berner Sternenmarkt in Kleine Schanze park takes place from November 19 to December 27. It has more food, bars, and a livelier evening atmosphere, as well as a fondue chalet.
All three locations are close enough to each other to visit during one walk through central Bern.

Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt

- Location: Franziskanerplatz
Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt at Franziskanerplatz runs from December 3 to 21, 2026. It is a traditional Old Town market with around 70 stalls selling gifts, handmade products, and winter food.
Rudolfs Weihnacht
- Dates: November 20-December 23, 2026
- Location: Inseli Park
Rudolfs Weihnacht takes place from November 20 to December 23 in Inseli Park near the lake. There are more than 50 stalls, bars, and food trucks, as well as a separate Fondue Chalet.
The first market is a better choice for a classic Christmas stroll, while the second is ideal for an evening of food and hot drinks by the lake.
Geneva
Noël au Quai
- Dates: November 19-December 24, 2026
- Location: Quai du Mont-Blanc
Geneva’s main Christmas market is called Noël au Quai. It takes place along the Lake Geneva waterfront and brings together market chalets, local producers, craftspeople, and street food vendors.
There is also a Chalet à Fondue, a carousel, and a family program. It is especially nice to visit in the evening, when the festive lights along the waterfront come on.
On Fridays and Saturdays, the market stays open until 11:00 pm. On other days, it closes earlier.

Bô Noël
- Dates: November 20-December 31, 2026
Bô Noël spreads across several locations in central Lausanne. Some focus more on crafts and gifts, while others are centered around food, bars, and seasonal events.
Local producers, designers, restaurants, and cultural venues all take part in the program.
Bô Noël stays open longer than most Christmas markets in Switzerland, running until December 31.
Smaller Christmas Markets
Einsiedeln
- Dates: November 27-December 6, 2026
The market takes place in the square in front of the famous monastery and along Hauptstrasse. It is a compact, quieter Christmas market with handmade goods, gifts, and local products.
The main reason to come here is the combination of festive market stalls and the beautiful Baroque monastery.
Grimentz
- Dates: December 12-13, 2026
Féeries de Noël takes place for just one weekend in the old part of the Alpine village of Grimentz. The stalls are set among traditional wooden houses, with local craftspeople and producers taking part.
This is a small local market that fits especially well into a winter trip through the canton of Valais.
Gruyères
The Gruyères Christmas Market takes place over four weekends:
- November 27-29;
- December 4-6;
- December 11-13;
- December 18-20.
Around 40 craftspeople set up in the historic center, alongside concerts, workshops, and family activities.
The market is easy to combine with a visit to Gruyères Castle and La Maison du Gruyère.
