Christmas Markets in Slovakia 2026

Slovakia’s Christmas markets have one interesting feature: they vary a lot in how long they stay open. In Banská Štiavnica, you have just two days to shop and meet local craftspeople. In Poprad, the market runs for ten days, while in Bratislava, the stalls stay open even after New Year’s Day.

The markets also have different things to offer. Some focus on concerts and entertainment, while others are all about handmade products from local artisans. You’ll find them in city squares, near medieval fortifications, and even in museum courtyards. Here’s a look at Slovakia’s Christmas markets for the 2026/2027 season, with dates and details to help you decide where to go.

Short Christmas Markets: From Two to Ten Days

Banská Štiavnica

• Dates: December 11–12, 2026
• Location: Kammerhof, Kammerhofská 2
• Opening hours: December 11, 11:00 AM–8:00 PM; December 12, 9:00 AM–8:00 PM

The Štjavnycký vjanočný jarmok Christmas market is organized by the Slovak Mining Museum and celebrates its 21st edition in 2026. What makes this market special isn’t its size but what you can buy. The organizers select vendors who sell their own handmade goods and locally produced items. Spaces are limited, with some stalls set up in the Kammerhof courtyards and others inside the complex.

It’s a good place to take your time browsing handmade products and finding gifts you won’t see in regular souvenir shops. The market is particularly appealing to anyone interested in ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and small craft markets.

The town itself is also worth visiting. Banská Štiavnica grew around historic mines, and its old town is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s easy to combine the market with a walk through the historic streets.

Poprad

• Dates: December 11–20, 2026
• Location: The area in front of Aréna Poprad

Poprad’s Christmas market returns for its 23rd edition. Vendors are given wooden stalls, and the number of sellers is limited. You’ll find craftspeople, gift makers, and vendors selling decorative items and local food products. The program includes live performances and festive events, while food stalls serve hot meals and drinks alongside the souvenir stands.

Poprad is also conveniently located. It’s one of the main transport hubs near the High Tatras, so if you’re staying in one of the mountain villages, you can easily come here for some shopping or dinner.

Christmas Markets That Close Before Christmas

Trnava

• Dates: November 27 – December 22, 2026
• Location: Trojičné námestie and surrounding streets

The Christmas season in Trnava is called Advent v Trnave, with the official opening scheduled for November 27 at 5:30 PM. Music plays a big part in the celebrations. The city has a strong choral singing tradition, so choir performances are an important part of the program. There are also Advent concerts and St. Nicholas celebrations.

Another interesting feature is the evening lantern tours of the city tower. They offer a chance to see Trnava after dark while learning more about the history of the old town.

Alongside the main market, the city hosts a Medieval Advent Market (Stredoveké adventné trhy), featuring traditional historical crafts and themed entertainment.

Trnava is about 50 kilometers from Bratislava, making it easy to visit both cities on the same Christmas trip.

Trenčín

• Dates: November 27 – December 23, 2026
• Location: Mierové námestie, Štúrovo námestie, and Sládkovičova, Hviezdoslavova, and Jaselská streets

The Christmas market is part of the Čaro Vianoc pod hradom festival, which means “The Magic of Christmas Beneath the Castle.” It spreads across several squares and streets in the city center. Some vendors sell Christmas decorations and traditional handicrafts, while others focus on food.

In 2026, food is a major highlight. Alongside the usual market stalls, there are dedicated spaces for food trucks. Meals are prepared on-site, so visitors can enjoy freshly cooked hot dishes rather than just ready-made snacks.

Trenčín is also a European Capital of Culture in 2026. The market opening coincides with the final festive weekend of the city’s cultural program. The city is also updating its market stalls and decorations along the central streets.

Prešov

• Dates: November 25 – December 23, 2026, with additional trading days from December 26–31
• Location: Pedestrian area of the historic center

Prešov’s Christmas celebrations are primarily aimed at local residents. This is a place to experience a traditional city Christmas market without a long list of special attractions designed for tourists.

Local businesses and producers set up stalls along the pedestrian streets. Alongside Christmas souvenirs, they sell food products, sweets, small gifts, and handmade crafts.

Prešov is around 35 kilometers from Košice, so it’s easy to visit both cities on one trip. During the additional trading days from December 26 to 31, only some stalls remain open, so don’t expect the full range of products.

Christmas Markets Open Until the End of December

Košice

• Dates: December 1–23 and December 26–31, 2026
• Location: Hlavná ulica
• Opening hours: 9:00 AM–9:00 PM; vendors are required to operate from noon to 9:00 PM

One of eastern Slovakia’s biggest Christmas celebrations is called Košické rozprávkové Vianoce, or “Fairytale Christmas in Košice.” The main market stalls line Hlavná ulica. Vendors are divided into categories, including grilled meat dishes, meat-free food, wine and honey-based drinks, and souvenirs.

This makes Košice a great place for an evening focused on food. You can try Slovak potato flatbreads called lokše, lángoš, sweet trdelník, and hot medovina, a traditional honey wine. Separate stalls sell gifts.

The entertainment program includes concerts, performances by local groups, and activities for children.

The market closes on December 24 and 25 before reopening on December 26. This makes Košice a good option for a trip to Slovakia after Christmas Day.

Banská Bystrica

The Christmas market covers two central squares. Alongside regular vendors, you’ll find charitable organizations and groups running seasonal entertainment.

The main market is held on Námestie SNP. It’s one of Slovakia’s largest historic squares, so the stalls don’t take up the entire space. There’s plenty of room to walk between the market stands, cafés, and shops.

There are also several interesting sights nearby, including the leaning clock tower, historic buildings around the square, and the castle complex. Everything is within walking distance, so there’s plenty to do beyond shopping.

Banská Bystrica fits easily into a trip around the historic towns of central Slovakia. You don’t need to set aside separate days just for the Christmas market.

Nitra

• Dates: Tentatively from late November through December 2026
• Location: Svätoplukovo námestie

Nitrianske vianočné mestečko is a seasonal Christmas village with market stalls, music, and entertainment. The city stage hosts concerts, children’s shows, and live performances. This makes Nitra a good choice for families who want to spend a few hours enjoying the Christmas atmosphere rather than simply walking past the stalls.

Christmas Markets Open After New Year’s Day

Žilina

• Dates: November 26, 2026 – January 1, 2027
• Location: Mariánske námestie and Námestie Andreja Hlinku

The Christmas season in Žilina lasts more than a month. The stalls open in November and stay in place until the first day of the new year.

The market spreads across two squares, with a slightly different selection at each. Mariánske námestie has dedicated spaces for handmade goods and local products, while food stalls operate on both squares.

It’s worth visiting if you enjoy browsing products from small local businesses. The artisans include makers of wooden goods, jewelry, and textiles, alongside vendors selling regional food products.

Žilina is also a convenient starting point for exploring northern Slovakia, with mountains, castles, and small historic towns nearby. You can stop at the market while traveling between them.

Bratislava

• Dates: November 26, 2026 – January 3, 2027
• Location: Hlavné námestie, Hviezdoslavovo námestie, and other locations in the city center
• Opening hours: 10:00 AM–10:00 PM; closed December 24 and 25

Bratislava has the longest Christmas market season of all the cities on this list. The main market stays open almost until Epiphany, also known as Three Kings’ Day, with festive events taking place across several parts of the Old Town.

In 2026, the market on Hlavné námestie features a promotion called Vianočný tip. Participating vendors offer selected dishes, drinks, or gifts at special prices.

The food selection here is noticeably more varied than at regional Christmas markets. Alongside traditional Slovak dishes, you’ll find Asian bao buns and gyoza, as well as vegetarian and vegan options.

Families can make use of a covered rest area in the city center. Around 40 Christmas trees decorate Primaciálne námestie, each one decorated by students from local schools. After the exhibition, some of the trees are donated to families and charitable organizations.

Another seasonal activity is a family game called Škriatkovo kúzlo. Participants search for lights and clues hidden in windows around the historic center, complete challenges, and meet fairytale characters along the way.

Bratislava works well for a short Christmas weekend or a trip in the final days of December, when many of Slovakia’s smaller Christmas markets have already closed.
