What is TeamLab Planet?

Teamlab Planet, located in Toyosu, Tokyo, is part of the world-renowned TeamLab Collective. The museum focuses on the fusion of art and technology, offering visitors the opportunity to engage with interactive digital works. Unlike traditional galleries, TeamLab Planet invites you to walk in the water, experience art in a new, tactile way, and be physically immersed in the exhibition.

The experience is divided into two main sections: the Water Zone and the Garden Zone, each featuring different types of art and interactive installations. The main highlight is the dynamic interaction between visitors and art, where water, floor, and wall projections react to your movements, creating an ever-evolving experience.

What to See and Do at TeamLab Planet

  1. Waterfall Entrance (Waterfall Walk) The first major experience is a surreal pathway where you walk through shallow creeks. The water flows warm and gently uphill, creating a feeling of weightlessness. You’ll need to take off your shoes before entering, and it’s recommended to leave your socks behind too. Be sure to roll up trousers or skirts, as the water can reach your knees.
  2. Floating Flower Garden One of TeamLab Planet’s most iconic installations, the Floating Flower Garden features real orchids suspended in the air and surrounded by floating flower projections. The area creates a peaceful atmosphere where the beauty of flowers and projections blend seamlessly. The scent of the flowers enhances the immersive experience.
  3. Soft Soil (Fluffy Floor) In the Water Zone, you’ll experience the soft earth room, filled with fluffy material similar to a bag of beans, making walking a fun challenge. The lighthearted nature of this installation adds to the overall enjoyable atmosphere.
  4. Carp Dance in the Water Another highlight is the projection of colorful koi fish swimming across the large water surface. The projection reacts to your movements, adding an interactive element to the exhibit. This is a popular photo opportunity in the museum.
  5. The Falling Universe of Flowers This dreamy installation features a rotating display of vivid flowers that seem to envelop you. The walls appear to be spinning, creating the illusion of floating in a kaleidoscope of petals and flowers. Reclining here offers the perfect view of the ever-changing projections.
  6. Forest and Garden of Light Outside the main water zone, you can visit the Forest of Light, where illuminated sculptures shine in the dark. The Garden Area offers a tranquil ambiance with mirrored surfaces that create endless reflections, enhancing the airy experience.

Practical Tips for Visiting TeamLab Planet

  1. Wear Comfortable Clothes and Shoes As you will walk in the water in some parts of the exhibition, it’s essential to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. It’s best to wear socks or be prepared to go barefoot, as you’ll need to remove your shoes before entering the water. If you’re concerned about wet clothes, you can roll up your pants or rent shorts from the museum.
  2. Plan Your Tickets in Advance While tickets can be purchased locally, it’s recommended to buy them online in advance to secure your spot. You can check available time slots on the museum’s website and it’s advised to arrive 15-20 minutes before your entry time.
  3. Prepare for Sensory Overload TeamLab Planet offers an immersive experience with sensory stimuli from light, sound, and projections, which may be overwhelming for some. If you are sensitive to flashing lights or crowds, plan accordingly. Accessible routes are available for those with mobility challenges, but some facilities may still present difficulties.
  4. Expect Large Crowds, Especially on Weekends This attraction is very popular, so expect large crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. For a quieter experience, consider visiting on weekday mornings. You can also check the museum’s website for special events or quieter times.
  5. Don’t Forget to Charge Your Camera TeamLab Planet offers endless photo opportunities, so be sure to bring a fully charged camera or smartphone. You’ll want to capture the stunning visuals and instagrammable moments.
