History and Legends Surrounding the Devil’s Bridge

The Devil’s Bridge, also known as Ponte della Maddalena, was built in the 11th century under the direction of Countess Matilda of Canossa. Its purpose was to connect Lucca with the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route leading to Rome. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly renovated, most notably in the 14th century by Castruccio Castracani, lord of Lucca. The bridge’s nickname comes from an old legend that the devil helped to build it.

According to local legend, the bridge’s designer made a pact with the devil, fearing that the construction would not be completed on time. The devil agreed to complete the bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross it. However, the clever townspeople outwitted the devil by letting the pigs cross first, and the devil, outraged, was vanquished. This dramatic story adds to the bridge’s appeal, making it not just a historical landmark, but a place of myth and legend.

Devil’s Bridge Highlights

  • Asymmetrical arches:
The bridge’s most striking feature is its steep, asymmetrical arches. As you walk across the bridge, you will notice that the central arch is so high that it almost defies gravity. The view from the bridge is also spectacular, offering a panoramic view of the Serchio River and the surrounding Tuscan hills.
  • Calm view of the riverbank:
At the foot of the bridge, the riverbank offers a peaceful setting. It is an ideal place to relax, take pictures, or enjoy a picnic in a wonderful medieval landscape.
  • Sights nearby:
There are several local spots near the bridge that are worth visiting. Borgo a Mozzano offers authentic Tuscan cuisine with charming restaurants such as the nearby Osteria del Diavolo. For a cultural spot, visit the Church of St. Jacob (San Jacopo) in Borgo a Mozzano. It houses a statue of Mary Magdalene that was once enshrined near the bridge.
