Cueva de las Manos, also known as the “Cave of the Hands,” is a highly significant archaeological site in Argentina, renowned for its ancient rock art. Situated in the remote and rugged region of Patagonia, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the early inhabitants of the area. Whether you are a passionate archaeology enthusiast or simply a curious traveler, a visit to Cueva de las Manos promises to be an unforgettable experience. This article provides detailed information on how to plan your visit, what you can expect to see, and essential tips to help you make the most of your trip.

What to See at Cueva de las Manos

The main attraction at Cueva de las Manos is its stunning collection of rock art, which dates back as far as 9,000 years. The cave walls are adorned with stenciled handprints, hunting scenes, and geometric designs created by the indigenous Tehuelche people and their ancestors. The most striking feature is the negative handprints, mostly left hands, believed to have been created by young boys during initiation ceremonies. Alongside the handprints, you will also find depictions of guanacos (a type of wild llama), which were a crucial source of food, as well as intricate hunting scenes that showcase the use of traditional throwing weapons called “bolas.”

The cave itself is an impressive sight, with a depth of 24 meters, an entrance width of 15 meters, and a height of approximately 10 meters. The surrounding area, including the Cañadón del Río Pinturas, offers breathtaking views of the Patagonian landscape, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers alike.

How to Plan Your Visit

Planning a visit to Cueva de las Manos requires some careful consideration due to its remote location. The nearest town, Perito Moreno, is located 163 kilometers away, and the journey through the Patagonian steppe is part of the adventure. It is recommended to access the site by car and to rent a sturdy vehicle suitable for the gravel roads. Guided tours are available, and it is highly recommended to hire a local guide to gain a full appreciation of the historical and cultural significance of the site.

When visiting, allocate at least half a day to explore the cave and its surroundings. The site is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring and summer months in the Southern Hemisphere (October to March) when the weather is milder. Due to the common strong winds in the Patagonian region, it is advisable to dress in layers and bring windproof clothing.

Getting to Cueva de las Manos

Cueva de las Manos is situated in the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina, within the Río Pinturas Canyon. The most commonly taken route to reach the site is from the town of Perito Moreno. From Perito Moreno, you can follow Route 40, which is the main highway that runs through Patagonia, before taking a side road that leads directly to the cave. Travelers from Buenos Aires can fly to the nearest major airport, Comodoro Rivadavia, and then drive to Perito Moreno. The drive takes approximately six hours.
