Lake Zurich
Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) stretches like a long, shimmering ribbon between green hills and a lively city waterfront. Families appreciate its calm atmosphere, spotless promenades, and wide-open spaces where children can run, cycle, splash, or simply watch the swans. The water is famously clean, and the lake feels closely woven into everyday life, blurring the line between urban space and nature.
Across its 40-kilometre length, the lake changes character: energetic and urban around Bürkliplatz, then increasingly peaceful and more “wild” toward the Obersee. This contrast suits travellers who want both photogenic viewpoints and quiet corners. Most areas are easy to reach on foot or by short public-transport rides, which makes planning with children far simpler and more relaxed.
How Do You Reach Lake Zurich and Move Around Easily?
Reaching the lake is straightforward. It sits at the bottom of Bahnhofstrasse, just a short walk from Zurich Main Train Station. Zurich’s public-transport system is unified, meaning the same ticket works across buses, trams, funiculars, and other local transport, which makes getting around intuitive even for first-time visitors. Ticket machines are widely available, and a 24-hour pass allows unlimited travel within the selected zones.
Click here to learn more about creating a personal itineraryParking is available near the lake in several large, well-organised public parking garages. As an Itinerary Expert, I still recommend renting a car if you plan to explore multiple lakeside towns such as Küsnacht, Horgen, or Rapperswil. A car offers much more flexibility when travelling with children, especially if you want to combine lake time with short side trips or spontaneous stops.
When I rent a car in Zurich, I usually park slightly away from the busiest promenade areas and walk the final 5-10 minutes. This approach reduces driving stress and often results in a faster overall arrival during peak hours, when traffic near the lakefront can be slow.

What Does a Boat Trip on Lake Zurich Look Like?
A cruise is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Lake Zurich. Several formats are available, depending on how much time you want to spend on the water:
- Short cruise: about 45-60 minutes
- Classic cruise: around 90 minutes
- Long cruise: up to 4 hours with multiple stops
A one-hour trip typically costs around 32 CHF. From the deck, you see hillside neighbourhoods, forests, elegant lakeside villas, and on clear days, the gentle outline of the Alps in the distance. Swans glide alongside the boat, early-morning rowers cut quietly through the water, and the steady rhythm of the lake creates a calming, almost meditative atmosphere.
On longer cruises, church bells from the city carry across the water and add a cinematic touch to the experience. Children usually enjoy spotting ferries, tiny sailboats, and even the small Geneva-style water fountain on the lake, which adds a playful element to the journey.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: Always try to sit on the outdoor upper deck. When I boarded late, I ended up inside with limited views – the scenery is much more impressive from outside, and it makes a big difference for photos.
A small drawback: when it’s windy, it can feel significantly colder on the boat. Bring layers even in summer so that everyone can stay outside comfortably.

Met this beautiful swan family on the shore of Lake Zurich – the sweetest surprise of the day.
What Can Families Actually Do at Lake Zurich?
1. Lakeside Walks and Promenades: Why Are They So Popular?
The promenades are one of Zurich’s greatest assets. They are wide, clean, stroller-friendly, and dotted with benches and small piers. Shady trees, well-kept gardens, and cafés right by the water create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Along the lake you’ll find lidos (public swimming complexes), small bathing platforms, grassy lawns, and quiet corners that are perfect for resting or enjoying an ice cream. Swans and ducks are everywhere, providing simple but endlessly engaging entertainment for children. In autumn, the lake takes on a silvery, misty mood; in summer, it comes alive with swimmers, paddleboards, and boats.
Bringing a picnic works especially well here. Even simple snacks picked up in town feel special when enjoyed with views of the water, surrounding hills, and distant mountains.
2. Boat Cruises and Water Activities: What’s Available?
Beyond classic sightseeing cruises, Lake Zurich offers:
- Swimming zones with designated entry points and very clean water
- Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)
- Kayaking, especially in the quieter parts of the lake
- Visits to small islands such as Ufenau and Lützelau, known for shallow, warmer water around them
The islands also have a restaurant and a camping area, with shuttle boats connecting them to the shore. This setup makes them an excellent half-day adventure for active families who want a mix of nature, movement, and easy logistics.
Around the islands, the water is shallow enough for adults to stand waist-deep far from shore. This feels unusual and fun for children who are building confidence in the water.
3. Exploring the Quieter Side: What Is Obersee?
Obersee, the southeastern part of Lake Zurich between Schmerikon and Pfäffikon, feels noticeably calmer and more natural than the city-side stretches. It’s ideal for families who value space, nature, and a slower rhythm over busy promenades and urban energy.
The area offers small islands, opportunities for SUP boarding, gentle kayaking, and wide, peaceful views across the water. Obersee feels like a softer, quieter world, yet it remains part of Lake Zurich and can easily be explored as a day trip.
If you’re travelling with a rental car, driving directly to Obersee is a very practical option. It allows access to more relaxed scenery, quieter lakeside spots, and generally easier parking compared with the central city areas.
4. What City Views Can You Enjoy from the Lake?
From the water, Zurich’s skyline reveals its main historic churches — Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and St. Peter’s Church — often visible during lake cruises. On clear days, the sound of church bells carries across the water, adding a distinctive atmosphere to the experience.
For families who are less interested in church interiors or detailed history, this moment is more about visual impact than background information. Even so, the skyline helps the cruise feel connected to the city itself, rather than being only a nature-focused experience.

Altstadt (Old Town): Why Combine It With the Lake?
Altstadt (Old Town) sits right beside the Limmat River, which flows out of Lake Zurich. Narrow lanes, historic buildings, and landmark churches such as Grossmünster and Fraumünster define the area’s character.
Even for families who are not focused on history, the Old Town works extremely well when combined with a lakeside stroll. Colourful façades, bridges, river views, and plenty of cafés create constant visual interest without requiring a structured visit.
Bahnhofstrasse: Is the Shopping Really That Good?
Bahnhofstrasse begins at Zurich Main Train Station and leads directly to the lake. The street is lined with luxury boutiques, cafés, and the famous Sprüngli confectionery at Paradeplatz.
Children are often drawn to the chocolate displays, while adults appreciate the elegant architecture and the ease of a flat, straightforward walk that naturally ends at the water.
Limmat River Cruise: Should You Add It?
A cruise on the Limmat River offers a more intimate perspective than the wide-open lake. Views include the Rathaus, Lindenhof hill, Grossmünster, and the Wasserkirche.
This is a good option for families who want variety without adding too much walking. The pace is calm and slow, which suits both younger children and older travellers.
Uetliberg: Where Do You Find the Best Panorama?
For postcard-style views of Lake Zurich and the Alps, Uetliberg is the classic choice. The area offers picnic tables, forest paths, and an observation deck with sweeping views over the city, the lake, and the surrounding hills.
On clear days, arriving shortly before sunset creates especially warm colours on the water and sky, making it a memorable and relaxed way to end the day.

Who Is Lake Zurich Good For?
Lake Zurich suits:
- Families with children aged roughly 5-18, thanks to easy walks, safe swimming zones, boat rides and friendly promenades
- Travellers who love nature but also appreciate city comfort and accessibility
- Visitors looking for calm scenery – swans, gentle views and quiet paths along the water
- People who enjoy photography – reflections of the Alps, boats, soft sunset light
- Families who want small, manageable adventures such as SUP, island visits, Obersee and longer cruises
Are There Any Downsides Families Should Know?
- The central section of the lake can feel busy, especially around Bürkliplatz and the most popular promenades.
- On cloudy or foggy days, views of the Alps may be limited, which reduces the “wow” factor.
- Some travellers felt that after a short walk there is not much structured entertainment unless you add a boat trip or explore nearby districts.
- Food and drinks near the water can be relatively expensive, which is common for Zurich.
As the Itinerary Expert, I usually suggest packing snacks and drinks before heading to the lakeshore. This keeps the day flexible and more budget-friendly without sacrificing the experience.
Is Lake Zurich Worth a Full Day?
Yes, especially if you combine several elements:
- A lakeside walk
- A 90-minute cruise
- Time at a lido or playground
- A short visit to Altstadt or Bahnhofstrasse
- A sunset viewpoint such as Uetliberg
Many families spend hours simply enjoying the atmosphere — feeding ducks, taking photos, and relaxing by the water. It’s the kind of place where a “slow” day still feels full, balanced, and genuinely memorable.

1-Day Itinerary for Lake Zurich (Zürichsee)
10:00 – Walk from Zurich Main Station to Lake Zurich (Bürkliplatz)
Allow about 20-25 minutes on foot down Bahnhofstrasse. On the way you can stop at the city’s clean drinking-water fountains and slowly make your way to the lakefront without using any transport. It’s an easy, flat warm-up walk with plenty of photo opportunities – swans, piers and the mountain backdrop.
11:00-12:30 – 90-Minute Lake Zurich Cruise
Depart from Bürkliplatz. The cruise lasts about 1-1.5 hours and costs around 32 CHF. Expect views of hillside towns, Alpine silhouettes, elegant lakeside houses and gentle waves. Plan for the full 90 minutes, including boarding and disembarkation.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: Aim for seats on the upper outdoor deck. When I boarded later, I only found indoor seats, and the views were much less impressive.
12:45-14:00 – Lunch near the Lake
Stay close to the water around Bürkliplatz or the Opera House lakefront. Choose between relaxed lakeside restaurants or a takeaway picnic from Bahnhofstrasse. This keeps the day flexible, especially if children are tired after the cruise.
14:00-16:00 – Lakeside Walk (Bellevue → Arboretum)
Walk 2-3 km along a flat, stroller-friendly promenade from Bellevue towards the Arboretum. The route offers shaded paths, green zones and plenty of rest areas. Spend about two hours strolling, watching ducks, letting children play near the piers and taking photos.
16:00-18:00 – Relax at a Lido (Public Swimming Area)
Finish the day at a lakeside lido such as Seebad Enge, known for its clean water, organised facilities, and relaxed atmosphere. This is an excellent late-afternoon stop for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the platforms that children love. Plan around 1.5-2 hours, depending on the season and water temperature.
Bringing swim shoes is a smart idea, as some lake entries have slippery stones. This small detail often makes children more confident when getting in and out of the water, and helps keep the experience stress-free.

Traveler Reviews – Lake Zurich (Zürichsee)
Emily Harper – July 2018
I visited Lake Zurich on a bright summer morning, and the mix of calm water and mountain views felt almost unreal. We chose the 90-minute cruise, which became the highlight – gentle breeze, swans everywhere and kids loving the open deck. My small tip: board early for outdoor seats; on sunny days it fills up quickly.
Daniel Brooks – April 2019
Walking the lakeside promenade was exactly what my family needed after a busy week. The paths were clean, quiet and full of places to sit and relax. We even watched early rowers on the water. The only downside was the higher price of snacks near Bürkliplatz, so I recommend buying something beforehand.
Sarah Mitchell – October 2021
I did not expect autumn at Lake Zurich to feel so atmospheric. Soft mist, silver reflections and almost no rush around us. We walked for nearly two hours, watching ducks and small boats. Everything was easy to reach from the city centre. If you come in autumn, try sunrise – the light is perfect for photos.
Michael Young – August 2022
We booked a short 45-minute boat trip from Bürkliplatz. It was exactly the right length with our kids. The views of hillside houses and the outline of the Alps were great. Just be prepared: even in August the upper deck can be chilly, so a light jacket is useful. I learned that the hard way.
Olivia Bennett – May 2023
Lake Zurich impressed me with how clean the water is. I finally understood why locals swim everywhere. We spent time at a lido, and my children loved jumping from the little platforms. It felt safe and well-organised. It did get busy in the afternoon, so next time I would arrive earlier in the day.
Adam Collins – September 2024
We decided to explore the quieter end of the lake at Obersee, and it was definitely worth the drive. It was calmer, greener and less crowded. I rented a SUP board and could stand far out from shore because the water is so shallow near the islands. For peace and good photos, this area is ideal.
Laura Chen – March 2025
Even on a chilly March day, the lake felt peaceful. We took an easy walk after some shopping on Bahnhofstrasse and ended up feeding swans along the promenade. The reflections of snow-covered Alps were beautiful. If it is foggy, I recommend waiting a bit – the light can change quickly and suddenly reveal everything.
James Parker – June 2025
Our kids wanted “one more boat ride,” so we tried the Limmat River cruise. It felt calmer than the main lake tours and offered lovely city views from the water. I liked that it was slower and more intimate. The only challenge was seating on a weekend, so arriving 15-20 minutes early helped.

Tips from the Itinerary Expert
- Board the cruise early for the best seats.
If you board the 90-minute or 45-minute Lake Zurich cruise early, you can choose outdoor seats with the best mountain and lakeshore views. Once the boat fills, families are often left with indoor spaces where the experience feels less special. - Use the promenades for easy, kid-friendly walks.
The lakeside promenades are wide, clean and full of benches. When my children needed a break, we simply stopped to watch swans. It is free, calming and keeps everyone engaged without rushing. - Visit Obersee for a quieter, more natural experience.
When the main lakefront felt too busy, I drove to Obersee. It was calmer, with more nature and shallow water around the islands. It is perfect for families who want space to breathe, practice SUP or take peaceful photos. - Bring swim shoes for lidos and lake entries.
The water is wonderfully clean, but some access points have slippery stones. Swim shoes made it much easier for my kids to get in and out of the lake without hesitation. - Pack snacks before heading to Bürkliplatz.
Around the central lakefront, food can be relatively expensive. I often buy snacks along Bahnhofstrasse and enjoy them by the water. It is a simple way to control the budget while still enjoying the setting. - Plan photos around early morning or pre-sunset.
I have seen Lake Zurich in all seasons, and the best colours usually appear shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. Reflections of the Alps are especially striking on clear days. - Choose shorter cruises for younger children.
If your children get restless, the 45-minute loops from Bürkliplatz are ideal. They still offer great views and a relaxing break but fit better with shorter attention spans. - Always carry an extra layer for boat rides.
Even in summer, wind on the upper deck can be surprising. I now always bring a light jacket so we can stay outside comfortably for the whole cruise. - Explore Ufenau and Lützelau for shallow-water fun.
Around these islands, the water is shallow enough for adults to stand far from shore. My children loved the feeling of “walking in the lake,” and it makes for memorable photos. - Use drinking fountains instead of buying bottled water.
Zurich’s fountains provide clean drinking water. I refill bottles throughout the day – practical, cold and free, which works very well for families.

Sunset at Lake Zurich felt like the sky was painting just for us. A moment I’ll carry with me forever.
Insights from the Itinerary Expert
I last visited Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) in June 2023, and even after many years of building itineraries, this place still impresses me with how naturally it balances city life and nature. Early mornings are my favourite time: the lake feels light and quiet, swans move across mirror-calm water and soft light touches the hills. It is the kind of atmosphere where families relax almost immediately, even after a long journey.
What I appreciate most is how easy the experience is. A simple walk along the promenade gives children space to run, parents space to breathe and everyone a chance to enjoy the view. Cruises are a pleasure too, but I always remind families to board early if they want the best outdoor seats. When the area around Bürkliplatz feels too busy, driving to Obersee changes the mood completely – calmer, softer and more spacious for those who love nature.
There are a few challenges: lakeside food stalls can be expensive, and the weather near the water can change quickly. However, with a light jacket and some snacks prepared in advance, the day remains smooth and enjoyable.
Lake Zurich is a calm, scenic and highly accessible destination for families. As the Itinerary Expert, I invite you to create an individual, well-balanced itinerary with me, so you can experience this lake and the rest of Switzerland at their best.
