Christmas Markets in Europe 2026
The Christmas season in Europe starts long before Christmas Day itself. The first markets open as early as November, and by the end of the month, festive lights are glowing in almost every popular tourist city.
The markets themselves can be very different. In some places, you’ll find just a few rows of wooden stalls selling mulled wine, pastries, and handmade local crafts. In others, the entire city center turns into a full-scale winter festival for several weeks, complete with ice rinks, light shows, and attractions.
If you don’t feel like choosing from dozens of cities, start with these eight.
Vienna, Austria
Wiener Christkindlmarkt
- Dates: November 13 to December 26, 2026
- Location: Rathausplatz
One of the best things about Vienna is that you don’t have to travel there for just one Christmas market. Markets are spread across the city, and each has a slightly different atmosphere. Besides Rathausplatz, I’d also stop by Schönbrunn and Belvedere.
It’s best to come to the square in front of City Hall toward evening, when the lights come on. That’s when you really get the Christmas atmosphere many people come to Vienna for in winter.
And you definitely shouldn’t leave without trying hot punch, Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, and some Austrian pastries.

Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Christmas Markets
- Dates: November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027
- Locations: Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square
Prague’s Christmas markets fit very naturally into a regular walk around the city. There’s no need to make a special trip to the outskirts, since the main markets are right in the historic center.
You can walk through the Old Town, arrive at Old Town Square, grab some hot wine or something to eat, and then keep exploring. The stalls sell sausages, sweet pastries, and souvenirs.
Another advantage of Prague is that the season continues into early January, so the city is also a good option for a trip after Christmas itself.

Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg Christmas Markets
- Dates: From November 27, 2026
- Location: Historic center
In December, Strasbourg doesn’t decorate just one square. Almost the entire historic center gets into the Christmas spirit. Markets are set up in several locations, while festive decorations cover house facades, streets, and squares.
Make sure to walk around the cathedral, Place Kléber, and the Petite France district. This is one of those places where it’s more enjoyable not to rush from one market to another, but simply wander through the center and keep coming across new Christmas spots along the way.

Christkindlesmarkt
- Dates: November 27 to December 24, 2026
If you’re looking for a classic German Christmas market, this is where I’d go. Nuremberg’s market is quite traditional, with handmade crafts, old Christmas customs, local food, and much less of the big festival feel.
Try Nürnberger Rostbratwurst and the local Lebkuchen gingerbread. You’ll see both practically everywhere.
Just keep the closing date in mind: Christkindlesmarkt ends on December 24.

Dresden, Germany
Striezelmarkt
- Dates: November 25 to December 24, 2026
Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is considered one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, and it’s genuinely worth visiting for the local traditions.
The stalls are full of wooden decorations, Christmas pyramids, and handicrafts from the Ore Mountains. And when it comes to edible souvenirs, the star of the show is, of course, Dresden Christstollen.
Dresden feels calmer than many of the larger Christmas destinations. So if you want a traditional German Advent experience without a huge festival built around it, this is a very good choice.

Budapest, Hungary
Advent Basilica
- Dates: November 13, 2026 to January 1, 2027
- Location: St. Stephen’s Basilica
The main market is held in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. In the evening, light projections are shown on the facade, food and craft stalls stay busy around the square, and there’s also a small ice rink nearby.
The Christmas market at Vörösmarty tér is not far from here either. I’d combine the two into one evening walk.
For food, look for lángos and kürtőskalács. Walking around Christmas Budapest on an empty stomach is generally a bad idea.
Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn Christmas Market
- Dates: November 20, 2026 to January 6, 2027
- Location: Town Hall Square
Tallinn has a completely different scale. You won’t get the feeling of an endless festival here. Instead, there’s a small Town Hall Square surrounded by medieval buildings, with a compact Christmas market right in the middle of the Old Town.
I think it’s an especially good choice for anyone who gets tired of huge markets and crowds. Everything is close together, there’s no need to rush anywhere, and the Old Town itself adds a lot to the winter atmosphere.
Another bonus is that the market stays open until January 6, 2027.

Winter Wonders
- Dates: November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027
- Location: Brussels city center
In Brussels, be prepared for something much bigger than a small Christmas market. Winter Wonders is a full-scale winter festival.
More than 200 stalls fill the city center, along with a Ferris wheel and an ice rink, while Grand-Place hosts light shows. So I’d choose Brussels if you want more than just a walk between market stalls and would happily spend an entire evening at the festival.
