Karersee, also known as Lago di Carezza, is a breathtaking alpine lake situated in the Dolomites of northern Italy. It is famous for its crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery, earning it the nickname “Rainbow Lake.” Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or an adventurer, a visit to Karersee is a must. Here’s how you can get there and what you can see and do once you arrive.

Getting to Karersee

By Car

Driving is the most convenient way to reach Karersee. The lake is easily accessible via well-maintained roads, and the journey through the Dolomites offers picturesque views at every turn. Ample parking is available near the lake, although it can fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons.

By Public Transport

If you prefer using public transport, you can take a train to Bolzano and then catch a bus to Nova Levante (Welschnofen). From Nova Levante, local buses or shuttles can transport you directly to Karersee.

Hiking Trails

For hiking enthusiasts, there are several trails that lead to Karersee. The historic Herrensteig trail from Nova Levante is a moderately difficult 9-kilometer hike, taking approximately three hours to complete. Alternatively, the 6.6-kilometer Templweg trail from Obereggen offers a relatively easy winter hike, lasting just under two hours.

Things to See and Do

The Legend of Karersee

One of the most enchanting aspects of Karersee is its local legend. It tells the story of a wizard named Masaré who fell in love with a beautiful mermaid residing in the lake. Following the advice of the witch Lanwerda, he attempted to capture her attention by throwing a rainbow into the lake. However, he forgot to disguise himself, and the mermaid, recognizing him, vanished forever. In his anger, Masaré shattered the rainbow and its jewels into the lake, giving it its unique colors.

Scenic Views and Photography

The vibrant colors of Karersee and its mirror-like reflections of the surrounding mountains and forests make it a paradise for photographers. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, make sure to bring your camera to capture the mesmerizing views.

Hiking and Walking

Aside from the Herrensteig and Templweg trails, there are numerous other paths around the lake that cater to different levels of difficulty. These trails provide opportunities to explore the lush spruce forests and enjoy panoramic views of the Dolomites.

Winter Activities

During the winter season, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing and snowshoeing. The nearby slopes cater to both beginners and experienced skiers.
