My love for Japan began the moment I arrived in Tokyo. The country amazed me with its harmony of ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, breathtaking nature, and a culture unlike any other. Since then, Japan has become a part of my life, and I return there again and again. Today I help travelers discover the real Japan: I create personalized itineraries, give lectures, and prepare guests for their unforgettable journey. I would be delighted to open Japan for you too!

Japan is a country that truly has it all. It can adapt to almost any kind of holiday: from family adventures with children, to multi-day hikes through mountains and valleys, to big-city escapes where the pace is so fast it almost takes your breath away. At the same time, Japan also knows how to slow everything down, with quiet corners where the landscape itself invites calm and inner peace. These are the kind of beautiful, almost magical places where you want to be with the person you love most. For a honeymoon filled with excitement, variety and shared experiences that awaken all the senses, there are few destinations as perfect as Japan – it’s the kind of trip you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

Romantic attractions in Japan

Japan is very different from Israel and from Western culture in general, and that includes how it “defines” romance. At first glance, its romantic spots may not always match classic European clichés, but once you look past the surface, the essentials are the same: restaurants with memorable views, parks that leave you speechless and quiet moments that belong only to the two of you. All of these can turn almost any corner into a romantic setting. Across the country, Japan offers countless ways to add more romance to your honeymoon. Here are some especially romantic places to consider for your trip:

  • Himeji Castle – Often called the “White Heron Castle”, this elegant landmark sits roughly halfway between Osaka and Hiroshima, surrounded by the beautiful Koko-en Gardens. The bright white castle walls, traditional architecture and carefully designed greenery create a soft, cinematic atmosphere that feels tailor-made for couples.
  • Miyajima – This small island in Hiroshima Bay is ideal for a half-day escape in one of the most romantic settings in Japan. At its heart stands the famous giant torii gate that appears to float on the water at high tide. The views here are among the most iconic in the country, especially at sunset, when the sky and sea blend into warm colours.
  • Kyoto – A classic city that radiates romance from every alley and temple path. With more than 1,600 temples and shrines and a constant sense of history and spirituality in the air, Kyoto is a dream destination for a romantic holiday, whether you are wandering old streets in kimonos or watching the city lights from a hillside.

  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove – This enchanting bamboo forest feels almost otherworldly, with tall green stalks forming a natural tunnel overhead. It is especially magical during cherry blossom season in spring or when autumn colours wash the surrounding hillsides in red and gold, turning a simple walk into an unforgettable shared moment.
  • Todai-ji Temple in Nara – Set inside Nara Park, this powerful and impressive temple complex, home to one of Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statues, can create a surprisingly romantic backdrop. The mix of historic wooden halls, wide lawns and free-roaming deer gives the area a serene, slightly surreal charm that is perfect for slow, hand-in-hand wandering.
  • Shinobazu Pond in Tokyo – Beautiful at any time of day, but especially dreamy after sunset, when the boats are moored, the city lights begin to glow and their reflections shimmer across the water. It is a lovely spot for a calm evening stroll away from the city’s noise.

  • Happo-en in Tokyo – A famous wedding and event venue with meticulously maintained traditional gardens, ponds and seasonal foliage. In autumn, when the leaves turn fiery shades of red and orange, the whole place becomes a living postcard of romance – it is no surprise that so many couples choose it for their big day.
  • Chidorigafuchi Moat Park – Close to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, this is one of the capital’s most magical spots. The park is pleasant year-round, with walking paths and boats gliding along the water, but in cherry blossom season it turns into a tunnel of pink petals, and rowing a boat here becomes one of the most romantic experiences you can have in the city.

Tip from the Itinerary Expert: If your dates are flexible, try to time at least one of these spots for sunset – the light alone can turn a beautiful place into a truly unforgettable memory.

Romantic cities in Japan for a couples’ getaway

Honeymoon in Tokyo

Tokyo is one of the world’s great capitals – a city that rivals Paris, New York and London in scale, energy and variety. Whatever you are looking for, you can find it here: historic landmarks, ancient temples, wide urban parks, endless dining options, quirky cafés, boutique shops and luxury hotels. For a honeymoon, Tokyo offers the perfect balance between excitement and comfort. Most couples enjoy spending about four to five days in the city, which allows enough time to experience its different neighbourhoods without rushing. Getting around is easy thanks to Tokyo’s efficient public transport network that connects all major attractions.

A recommended place to stay is Shinjuku, which offers excellent transportation and allows you to explore the city effortlessly each day.

Honeymoon in Kyoto

Kyoto is the gentle opposite of Tokyo – calm, spiritual and deeply traditional. Known as the cultural heart of Japan, it is filled with centuries-old temples, wooden houses, narrow stone lanes and scenery that feels like stepping into a historic painting. For couples seeking a slower, more atmospheric honeymoon, Kyoto is ideal. The city reveals its beauty best when you allow yourselves to wander without a strict plan.

For accommodation, travellers usually choose between two main districts: the historic Higashiyama area, known for its temples and picturesque streets, or the Taketo district, where many temples are especially stunning during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage. Spending at least three full days in Kyoto is recommended to appreciate its character.

Tip from the Itinerary Expert: Kyoto is most enjoyable early in the morning or late in the afternoon – plan some of your temple visits for these quieter hours.

Spring in Nara is particularly beautiful, with blooming trees and mild weather making strolls through the parks especially pleasant. The city’s main highlight is Todai-ji Temple, home to Japan’s largest Buddha statue, but many couples fall in love with Nara because of Nara Park, where friendly deer roam freely among the paths and temple grounds, adding a unique touch to the atmosphere.

Nara is perfect for a relaxed couples’ escape, and most visitors enjoy spending two days there, including one overnight stay to experience the city’s calm once the daytime crowds have left.

The perfect 10-day honeymoon itinerary in Japan

Day 1 – Arrival in Tokyo

No matter where you’re flying from, your first day in Tokyo is dedicated to settling in. After checking into your hotel, take a gentle walk around the neighbourhood and give yourselves time to adjust to the rhythm of the city. Tokyo is vibrant, intense and constantly in motion, so beginning your trip slowly will make the rest of your journey more enjoyable. Most couples choose to stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya, both of which offer excellent transportation options and convenient access to dining and shopping.

Day 2 – Shibuya District

As this is your honeymoon, there’s no need to rush. Start the day whenever it feels comfortable. If you’re staying in Shibuya, you can explore much of the area on foot. Begin with a walk through Yoyogi Park, a popular spot for wedding photography, especially during cherry blossom season. Continue to Meiji Shrine, a symbolic site of Japanese culture surrounded by peaceful forest paths. From there, stroll toward the fashionable streets of Harajuku, and end your day exploring Shibuya’s lively avenues and its famous crossing.

Day 3 – Ueno Park and Museums

Start the morning in Ueno Park, home to several major museums, tranquil walking paths and scenic ponds. Couples often spend three to four hours here before walking to Ameyoko Market, one of Tokyo’s most energetic open-air markets filled with street food, souvenirs and a lively local atmosphere. In the afternoon, head to Roppongi Hills Mori Tower for panoramic city views, then continue to the nearby Azabu-Juban district, known for its cafés, restaurants and relaxed evening ambience.

Day 4 – Odaiba and Sumida

This day is dedicated to Tokyo’s futuristic side. Odaiba, originally constructed as a coastal defence area, has become a modern entertainment hub filled with interactive museums, shopping centres and waterfront views. After spending several hours here, make your way to the Sumida district, known for its cultural spots and the impressive Sumida Hokusai Museum. Finish the day with a visit to Tokyo Skytree, the tallest structure in the city and a perfect location to enjoy sweeping night views.

Honeymoon in Japan

A magical night view of Senso-ji Temple glowing under the Tokyo sky — a perfect moment where tradition meets the city’s vibrant energy.

Day 5 – Historic Tokyo and Akihabara

Begin your day in Asakusa, starting at the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, continuing through Nakamise Street, one of Tokyo’s oldest shopping streets, and arriving at Senso-ji Temple, the city’s most famous and historically rich temple. After taking your time here, head to Akihabara Electric Town, a paradise for electronics, gaming and anime enthusiasts. End the day back in Shinjuku, which transforms at night into one of Tokyo’s most vibrant entertainment districts.

Day 6 – Hakone: Nature and Hot Springs

Hakone is one of Japan’s most beloved scenic regions, known for its hot springs, mountain views and close proximity to Mount Fuji. It is worth dedicating two full days to this area. Start with a visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where contemporary art is displayed among beautiful landscapes. Later, check into your hotel and enjoy the spa facilities. Many hot spring facilities separate men and women, so it’s worth checking whether your accommodation offers private baths for couples.

Day 7 – Hakone: A Full Day of Nature

This day is dedicated to exploring Hakone’s landscapes using the area’s unique transport network, which includes boats, cable cars, ropeways and mountain railways. Along the route, you’ll enjoy calm lakes, striking viewpoints and, on clear days, memorable views of Mount Fuji. After a full day outdoors, continue your journey to Kyoto by either train or rental car, keeping in mind that the train is usually faster.

Tip from the Itinerary Expert: Hakone’s weather can change quickly. Check conditions before heading out so you don’t miss the best viewpoints.

Day 8 – Classic Kyoto

Kyoto offers a completely different rhythm from Tokyo – calmer, more spiritual and full of traditional charm. Begin the day at Kinkaku-ji, the famous Golden Pavilion and one of Japan’s most celebrated temples. It’s best to arrive early to avoid heavy crowds. Continue to Ryoan-ji, known for its iconic rock garden and minimalist design. End your day in Arashiyama, exploring the Bamboo Grove and visiting the Monkey Park, where nature and classic Japanese scenery create a memorable atmosphere.

Honeymoon in Japan

A relaxing honeymoon moment by the pool — sunshine, calm water and the perfect escape for two.

Day 9 – Nara and the Path of a Thousand Torii

Nara is a small and historically rich city near Kyoto. Once the capital of Japan, it is home to the magnificent Todai-ji Temple, located in the heart of Nara Park. The temple is considered the largest wooden structure in the world and houses a massive Buddha statue. After your visit, return to Kyoto and head to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its long walking path lined with thousands of bright red torii gates. Depending on your pace, the walk can take between two and four hours.

Day 10 – Kyoto: A Final Day of Temples

Kyoto is home to more than 1,500 temples, making the last day an ideal opportunity to explore a few more highlights. Start at Kiyomizu-dera, also known as the “Temple of Pure Water”, built along a hillside with expansive views of the city. Afterward, walk through Sannenzaka, a charming stone-paved street lined with traditional shops. Nearby, you can admire the impressive five-story Yasaka Pagoda. For those wishing to extend their temple experience, Heian Jingu and Chion-in are excellent final stops, with Chion-in featuring the largest wooden gate in Japan.

Day 11 – Return to Tokyo and the airport

After an unforgettable journey through Japan, travel back to Tokyo to prepare for your flight home. If time allows, enjoy a final Japanese meal or a short walk before heading to the airport.

Tip from the Itinerary Expert: On your last day, avoid planning activities far from transportation hubs – staying close to your route back to Tokyo will help you end your trip smoothly and stress-free.

Honeymoon in Japan

A peaceful red bridge leading to a traditional Kyoto pavilion surrounded by autumn colours — a dreamlike place for quiet moments together.

Japan through the seasons

Spring (March-June)
Spring is the most recommended time to visit Japan. April and May, the peak of cherry blossom season, offer especially romantic scenery for couples.

Summer
Hot and humid, but still manageable. Be prepared for possible rain and a higher chance of typhoons later in the season.

Honeymoon in Japan

A quiet Tokyo street at night — a rare calm moment in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Autumn
Cooler temperatures and stunning foliage make autumn an excellent time to travel, with fewer crowds compared to spring.

Winter
The least recommended season for general travel, with cold, dry weather and snow in many regions, making movement less comfortable.
