Shir Zamer – Expert on Japan First trip to Japan in 2014 My love for Japan started immediately when I got off the plane at Tokyo Airport. I didn't know what to expect and found myself living intermittently between Tokyo and Tel Aviv for 5 years, during which I got to know the local culture, the breathtaking landscapes, and the unique Japanese cities that are unlike any others. Japan is learning to open up to visitors from all over the world. This vast country, which rose from the harsh blow almost 80 years ago, has become an international economic and cultural power, and much more, while preserving its unique character. Japan combines in a way you won’t find anywhere else Western advancement, technology, capitalist economy, while obsessively maintaining its very unique culture. The culture manages to preserve all the wonderful and beautiful things in the world. Beyond that, Japan is a country of stunning landscapes, a pleasant climate for travel, rare environmental development in its beauty, and many other surprises. All of these captivated my heart long ago, and now I want to infect you with my love for Japan. In recent years, I have been guiding travelers and preparing them for their visit to Japan. My connection with the country has not ceased, and even today, I go to the country for at least two months a year. Currently, I am working on trips to Japan on a regular basis, including: Writing articles for various websites on Japan. Lectures on Japanese culture. Specializing in creating custom itineraries all over Japan. Dealing with suppliers and service providers in Japan for Israeli travelers.

Kiyomizu-Dera Temple is one of the most iconic and historically significant temples in Japan, a must-visit destination in Kyoto. This temple offers not only breathtaking views and unique architecture but also a deeply spiritual experience. Here is everything you need to know to get the most out of your visit to Kiyomizu-Dera Temple.

An Architectural Marvel

Kiyomizu-Dera Temple is renowned for its main hall, which is supported by 139 wooden pillars and extends out from a sheer cliff. This structure, built without the use of nails, is a true masterpiece of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The wooden stage, situated 13 meters above the ground, offers a panoramic view of the city of Kyoto and the surrounding hills. The view is particularly stunning in spring and fall, when cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are at their peak.

Inside the main hall, visitors can admire a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, depicted with 11 faces and 42 arms. This elaborate and striking representation embodies the mercy of the divine.

Kiyomizu-Dera Temple Highlights

  1. Otowa Falls
At the foot of the main hall lies Otowa Falls, a key feature of the temple. The water flows in three streams, each associated with blessings for longevity, academic success, and love. Visitors can drink from the three waterfalls using cups attached to long sticks. However, drinking from all three is considered greedy, so it’s advised to choose wisely.
  2. Jishu Shrine
Located behind the main shrine, Jishu Shrine is dedicated to the god of love and matchmaking. A unique superstition here involves two stones placed 18 meters apart. To test one’s luck in love, visitors are encouraged to walk from one stone to the other with their eyes closed. If successful, it is believed they will find true love. If not, they may try again with the help of a guide.
  3. Koyasu Pagoda
The Koyasu Pagoda, at the southern end of the temple grounds, is a beautiful three-story structure. It is believed that worshipping at this pagoda will bring an easy delivery, making it a popular destination for pregnant women.
  4. Inner Sanctuary
Another notable feature of Kiyomizu-Dera Temple is the Okuno-in Hall. Although smaller than the main hall, it is similarly designed and houses several Buddhist statues. This peaceful space is ideal for meditation and reflection.

Spiritual Significance and Local Superstitions

Kiyomizu-Dera is not only a tourist attraction but also a place of spiritual practice. Beyond the Otowa Falls and Jishu Shrine, there are opportunities to participate in traditional Japanese ceremonies. One popular ritual involves the burning of incense, which costs only 10 yen. Visitors can partake in this simple but meaningful ceremony, invoking the mercy of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.

A famous superstition associated with Kiyomizu-Dera is the belief that one’s wish will come true if they jump off the stage. While this practice is now prohibited, the phrase “jumping off the stage at Kiyomizu” persists, symbolizing a leap of faith.
