Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, Lake Tovel stands out as one of Trentino’s most spectacular alpine lakes. With its mesmerizing emerald-green waters that shift between turquoise and deep green depending on the light, this natural wonder offers visitors a perfect blend of stunning scenery and accessible outdoor adventure.

What Makes Lake Tovel Special

The lake’s crystal-clear waters create mirror-like reflections of the surrounding Brenta mountains, while its unique coloring comes from natural minerals and algae. The 3.5-kilometer walking path around the perimeter makes it accessible to families, while small white pebble beaches dotted along the shoreline provide perfect spots for swimming (yes, it’s cold but refreshing!) and picnicking.

Getting There and Parking: The Reality Check

Here’s what you need to know about parking: costs €18 per day fixed rate, regardless of how long you stay.

The Parking System Explained

  • Must purchase tickets in advance at Tuenno village (Via Trento 109) before heading up to the lake
  • Ticket office open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., after 5 p.m. parking is free of charge
  • No on-site ticket sales – this catches many visitors off guard
  • 8 car parks located along the Val di Tovel, with rates the same for all regardless of distance from lake
  • Free shuttle service included in parking fee, running every 20-30 minutes between parking areas

Parking Schedule & Fees

  • Currently (mid-June onwards): Daily parking fees apply
  • Paid weekends in June and everyday July 1 to August 31
  • September: paid first two weekends only
  • Reduced rates for those entering after 3 p.m.

Alternative Options

  • Free parking areas in Tuenno: P6 and P7 with 90 and 50 spaces respectively
  • Walk/bike from Tuenno: 5.7km via Glare hiking trail (400m elevation gain)
  • Shuttle from Cles/Tuenno: €5 round-trip, June 23 – September 3
  • Book restaurant reservations: Some lakeside restaurants offer reduced parking (€5 vs €18 with hotel deals)

Lake Tovel

Best Times to Visit

  • June: Since mid-June, paid parking applies daily (currently €18/day)
  • July-August: Peak season, daily parking fees €18, all facilities open, expect crowds and full parking by 9 AM
  • September: Reduced fees (first two weekends only)
  • April-May: Ideal weather, fewer crowds, some facilities may be closed
  • October-March: Road typically closed due to snow

Weather reality: Even in summer, temperatures are 15°C cooler than nearby cities. Pack layers and waterproof gear.

The Lake Circuit: What to Expect

The complete loop around Lake Tovel takes 1.5-2 hours at a leisurely pace, covering approximately 3.5 kilometers. The path splits into two routes:

Left Path (counterclockwise)

  • Shadier and more rustic
  • Some steep sections with steel cables for support
  • Can be slippery when wet
  • More dramatic mountain views

Right Path (clockwise)

  • Wider, easier walking
  • Gentle elevation changes
  • Better for families with young children
  • Access to restaurants and facilities

Key Stops Along the Way

  • White Beach (Spiaggia Bianca): The lake’s main swimming area with white pebble shores
  • Risla Waterfall: Short detour worth taking (best in spring/early summer)
  • Lago Rosso Restaurant: Midway refreshment stop with local cuisine
  • Various small beaches: Perfect for photo stops and rest breaks

Swimming and Activities

Swimming is allowed and surprisingly popular despite water temperatures of 10-12°C even in August. The white pebble beaches provide the best entry points, though the lake bottom drops off fairly quickly.

What to Bring

  • Water shoes: Essential for comfortable lake entry
  • Towels and warm clothes: You’ll want them after swimming
  • Picnic supplies: Limited food options and no trash bins around the lake
  • Camera: The reflections and colors are genuinely spectacular

Important: No lifeguards on duty, and some areas have steep drop-offs. Supervise children carefully.

Lake Tovel

Dining Options

Lakeside Restaurants

  • Chalet Tovel – Mountain Lake: Highly rated hotel restaurant, requires advance reservations. Offers parking deals for guests (free parking vs €18 standard rate)
  • Albergo Lago Rosso: Midway point on the circuit, local cuisine
  • Restaurant at Chalet Tovel: À la carte restaurant with local specialties

Pricing reality: Expect restaurant prices to be on the higher side given the remote location. Some hotels offer significant parking discounts (€5 vs €18) if you dine with them.

Practical Essentials

What You Won’t Find

  • No trash bins: Pack out everything you bring in
  • No cell phone coverage: Plan accordingly and inform others of your whereabouts
  • Limited facilities: Toilets only at parking areas, not around the lake

Family Considerations

  • Stroller accessibility: Possible on the right path only, left path too steep
  • Dog-friendly: Pets welcome but must be leashed, bring waste bags
  • Age recommendations: Suitable for children who can walk 3-4 kilometers

Money-Saving Tips

  1. Take advantage of off-peak times: Arrive after 5 PM for free parking (though limited daylight for activities)
  2. Use reduced rate window: Enter after 3 PM for lower parking fees
  3. Consider hotel dining deals: Some lakeside hotels offer parking for €5 instead of €18 with meal reservations
  4. Park in Tuenno village: Use free P6/P7 parking and take shuttle (€5 round-trip) vs €18 lake parking
  5. Time your visit strategically: Currently in peak season with daily fees, but September offers reduced costs (except first two weekends)
  6. Pack your own lunch – restaurants are pricey and limited
  7. Walk the Glare trail: 5.7km hike from Tuenno avoids all parking fees

Common Frustrations (And How to Avoid Them)

  • Parking ticket confusion: The system is in Italian only, plan extra time in Tuenno
  • Shuttle lunch break: Service stops 12:30-2:30 PM, factor this into your timing
  • Weather changes quickly: Mountain conditions can shift rapidly, check forecasts
  • Crowds in summer: Arrive before 9 AM or visit weekdays when possible
