Built in the second half of the 15th century by Duke Sigismund of Austria as his city residence, Castello Principesco has a rich history and has hosted notable figures, including Emperor Maximilian I. The castle has undergone several restorations over the centuries, with the most significant one led by renowned architect Friedrich von Schmidt in the late 19th century. Today, it is a museum that attracts over 20,000 visitors annually, providing a unique insight into medieval and Renaissance life.

  • Allow approximately 30 to 40 minutes for a tour of the castle. Consider combining your visit with a walk along the beautiful Tappeinerweg or a chairlift ride to Dorf Tirol, both starting near the castle.
  • The courtyard and the wedding hall on the ground floor are accessible to visitors with disabilities. A virtual tour is available from a PC in the wedding hall.
  • Note that photography inside the castle may be restricted, so check for signs and ask for permission where needed.

How to Get There

Castello Principesco is conveniently located in the center of Merano, making it easily accessible on foot from various parts of the city. Visitors can enter from Via Galileo Galilei or from the Arcades located behind the Town Hall. Parking is available nearby, although spaces may be limited.
