The Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca (Botanical Gardens of Lucca), located within the old walls of Lucca, offers visitors a tranquil escape into nature. Founded in 1820 by Maria Luisa di Borrone, the garden has developed into a haven for plant lovers, history buffs, and those seeking tranquility. It has developed as a place of rest and relaxation for those in search of tranquility. Whether you are a botanist, a tourist, or simply want to enjoy a quiet stroll, this botanical garden has something for everyone. Here is a detailed guide to help you plan your visit and get the most out of your experience.

Lucca Botanical Garden Highlights

  • The Botanical Garden
One of the highlights of the Lucca Botanical Gardens is the impressive arboretum, with towering trees over 100 years old; the cedar of Lebanon, planted in 1822, is a must-see and a majestic testament to the gardens’ long history. The bald cypress on the shores of the garden’s lake is also a fascinating sight, its roots and branches casting mysterious reflections on the water.
  • A Small Lake
At the center of the garden is a picturesque small lake, home to water lilies and the iconic bald cypress. This calm body of water provides a lovely spot for reflection and photography. The lake is also surrounded by fascinating legends, including the legend of Lucida Mansi, a noblewoman who, according to local lore, made a pact with the devil and disappeared at the bottom of the lake.

  • Greenhouses
Explore both the old and modern greenhouses. In the old greenhouse, visitors can see tropical plants growing in the carefully controlled environment of the gardens. In the new greenhouse, seasonal displays are held, and during the summer months, some plants are moved outdoors to create a lush atmosphere.
  • The Flora of the Apuan Alps
If you are interested in local flora, visit the Flora of the Apuan Alps section, where plants native to the mountains around Lucca are on display. The rugged rock formations and hardy plants are a stark contrast to the manicured gardens.
  • Rare and Exotic Plants
Many rare and exotic species are scattered throughout the park. For example, the ginkgo tree turns a breathtaking golden canopy in the fall. And the sequoia, planted in 1840, is a symbol of resilience and longevity.

Tips for Tourists

  1. Best Season
The gardens are beautiful all year round, but the best season is spring and early summer. During this time, camellias and rhododendrons are in full bloom, and the garden becomes a riot of color. Autumn is also the best time to view the brilliant fall colors of the ginkgo trees.
  2. Guided Tours and Language Tips
A disadvantage for foreign visitors is that most of the signs are in Italian. Guided tours may be available in different languages, so check with the ticket office for details.
  3. Photography
Signs may be posted prohibiting photography, but this restriction usually applies only to professional photographers. The scenery is spectacular, especially around the lake and greenhouses.
  4. Access
The gardens are relatively small and easy to navigate. However, please note that some parts of the gardens, especially around the small lake and greenhouses, may be inaccessible to visitors with limited mobility.
