A Glimpse into History

Built in the second half of the 15th century by Duke Sigismund of Austria as his city residence, Castello Principesco has a rich history and has hosted notable figures, including Emperor Maximilian I. The castle has undergone several restorations over the centuries, with the most significant one led by renowned architect Friedrich von Schmidt in the late 19th century. Today, it is a museum that attracts over 20,000 visitors annually, providing a unique insight into medieval and Renaissance life.

What to See

Highlights Inside

  • Frescoed Courtyard: The castle’s courtyard is adorned with naturalistic frescoes of plants and animals, creating a picturesque entrance.
  • Chapel: A small but enchanting chapel featuring 16th-century frescoes and a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon.
  • Historical Rooms: Explore rooms furnished with period pieces, including Gothic and Renaissance furniture, ancient musical instruments, and weaponry.
  • Tiled Stoves: Don’t miss the 15th-century tiled stoves, some of the oldest of their kind.

Exhibitions

  • Art Gallery: The ground floor houses an art gallery with portraits of historical figures such as Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I.
  • Armory Room: The first noble floor displays a collection of medieval weapons and armor.

What Not to Miss

  • Wedding Hall: The castle is a popular venue for civil weddings, offering a romantic and historical setting for ceremonies.
  • Historical Context: Learn about the castle’s past, including its use by the Thurn and Taxis family and its near-demolition in the 19th century, saved by public protest.
  • Unique Atmosphere: Experience the late medieval and Renaissance ambiance, meticulously preserved through historical restoration efforts.

Tips for Visitors

  • Allow approximately 30 to 40 minutes for a tour of the castle. Consider combining your visit with a walk along the beautiful Tappeinerweg or a chairlift ride to Dorf Tirol, both starting near the castle.
