Sentier Elsa Overview

SentierElsa is a point-to-point walking trail that begins at Ponte di Spugna and ends near the Cascata del Diborrato waterfall. It is a quiet place to get a glimpse of Tuscany’s natural beauty and escape from the busy tourist areas.

Main Features and Attractions

Di Bollato Waterfall

At the end of the trail, the Di Bollato Waterfall features a spectacular 15-meter drop with a tranquil swimming hole below. The refreshing water is especially pleasant during the warmer months, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking relief from the heat.

History of Hydro-Engineering

The trail also offers a glimpse into the area’s historic hydro-engineering: the “Stecchia” and “Carone Reale,” two notable structures dating back to the 11th century that divert river water into artificial canals and historically powered the area’s factories and other industries.

Natural Wonders

As you walk the trail, you will encounter various natural attractions, including the Grotta dell’Orso (Bear Cave), the Masso Bianco (White Rock), and the Eagle Esplanade. Explanatory signs are placed at these spectacular viewpoints, where you can easily learn about the local ecosystem.

Plan Your Visit

Access

SentierElsa is conveniently located only 30 minutes from Siena and is easily accessible by car or public transportation. If you arrive by car, ample free parking is available at Ponte Spagna and Ponte San Marziale. By public transportation, buses 135, 201, and 202 connect Colle di Val d’Elsa to the surrounding area and stop near the trailhead.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Starting from Ponte di Spagna: Enjoy the scenic route leading up to the waterfall (about 2.5 km one way).
  2. Pause at the Waterfall: Spend at least an hour relaxing at the Dibollato Falls. Take a dip, have a picnic, or simply bask in the beauty of nature.
  3. Return: Hike back via the same path or take public transportation. If you’re adventurous, hike back; otherwise, take the bus from Ponte San Marziale back to the starting point.

When to Visit

The trail is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring and summer, when the weather is pleasant and the falls are at their most beautiful. Weekends can be busy with locals, so visit on a weekday for a quieter experience.

Advice for Tourists

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: The trail can be slippery in parts, especially near the water. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water, especially during warmer temperatures.
  • Plan for Lack of Facilities: There are no restrooms or changing rooms along the trail. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug spray, as mosquitoes are common near the water.
  • Leave No Trace: There are no trash cans along the trail, so be sure to take your trash with you to protect the natural environment.
  • Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for local wildlife along the trail, including various species of birds and animals.

Points of Interest Not to Be Missed

  • Swimming: Don’t miss the chance to swim in the cool waters below Di Bollato Falls. Watch out for submerged rocks and boulders.
  • Photography: Capture the stunning scenery, vibrant vegetation, and fascinating river views. The falls are a great opportunity for photography, especially in the golden light of late afternoon.
  • Picnic: Bring a picnic and enjoy it at a designated table near the falls. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy nature.

Opening Hours: Open all year round
