Sections:
SentierElsa is a point-to-point walking trail that begins at Ponte di Spugna and ends near the Cascata del Diborrato waterfall. It is a quiet place to get a glimpse of Tuscany’s natural beauty and escape from the busy tourist areas.
Di Bollato Waterfall
At the end of the trail, the Di Bollato Waterfall features a spectacular 15-meter drop with a tranquil swimming hole below. The refreshing water is especially pleasant during the warmer months, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking relief from the heat.
History of Hydro-Engineering
The trail also offers a glimpse into the area’s historic hydro-engineering: the “Stecchia” and “Carone Reale,” two notable structures dating back to the 11th century that divert river water into artificial canals and historically powered the area’s factories and other industries.
Natural Wonders
As you walk the trail, you will encounter various natural attractions, including the Grotta dell’Orso (Bear Cave), the Masso Bianco (White Rock), and the Eagle Esplanade. Explanatory signs are placed at these spectacular viewpoints, where you can easily learn about the local ecosystem.
Access
SentierElsa is conveniently located only 30 minutes from Siena and is easily accessible by car or public transportation. If you arrive by car, ample free parking is available at Ponte Spagna and Ponte San Marziale. By public transportation, buses 135, 201, and 202 connect Colle di Val d’Elsa to the surrounding area and stop near the trailhead.
Suggested Itinerary
The trail is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring and summer, when the weather is pleasant and the falls are at their most beautiful. Weekends can be busy with locals, so visit on a weekday for a quieter experience.
Opening Hours: Open all year round
Ticket Price: Admission free
