My love for Japan began the moment I arrived in Tokyo. The country amazed me with its harmony of ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, breathtaking nature, and a culture unlike any other. Since then, Japan has become a part of my life, and I return there again and again. Today I help travelers discover the real Japan: I create personalized itineraries, give lectures, and prepare guests for their unforgettable journey. I would be delighted to open Japan for you too!

Located in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, Kiso Valley offers a fascinating journey through history, nature, and culture. Known for its well-preserved post towns, scenic landscapes, and rich heritage, this area invites travelers to experience the charm of old Japan. Kiso Valley is especially famous for the Nakasendo, an ancient road connecting Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Edo period, with many of its historical features still intact.

Historic Towns: Step Back in Time

The main historical attractions in Kiso Valley are its three post towns: Tsumago, Magome, and Narai. Once bustling as rest stops for travelers on the Nakasendo Road, these towns now offer a chance to experience life during the Edo period.

Tsumago

Tsumago, one of the best-preserved post towns, is a picturesque destination where time seems to stand still. Stroll along the cobblestone streets to explore traditional wooden houses, craft shops, and old inns that retain the charm of the Edo era.

  • Honjin: This former lodging facility for senior officials is a glimpse into the past. The recently rebuilt building offers visitors the chance to stroll through ornate rooms and learn about the town’s historical importance.
  • Wakihonjin: A traditional ryokan that hosted lower-ranked travelers, offering a peaceful atmosphere, with beautiful gardens and rooms dating back over 100 years.

In addition, inns in the town offer a chance to experience local hospitality, enjoy multi-course meals, and sleep on tatami mats.
