Attractions in Tokyo
In Tokyo, families will find a wide variety of attractions suitable for children of all ages. Of course, the city is famous for its major theme parks, but you may be surprised to discover that even the museums and zoos in Japan offer very different experiences compared to those you might know in Israel.
Tokyo Disneyland – Japan’s version of the world-famous American theme park delivers the full magical experience: beloved roaming characters, spectacular parades and distinct themed worlds, each with its own atmosphere and immersive attractions.
Tokyo DisneySea – A unique park that blends classic Disney storytelling with ocean-inspired worlds and adventures. It is slightly more appealing for older children and teens, although all ages will find something to enjoy.
Joypolis Sega – This indoor amusement park, inspired by the Japanese gaming company SEGA, offers a thrilling and distinctly Japanese entertainment experience for visitors of all ages.
Fuji-Q Highland – Located at the foot of Mount Fuji, this large theme park features dozens of attractions for all ages, including one of the world’s longest roller coasters. It is farther from Tokyo but highly recommended.
Sanrio Puroland – A delightful indoor park dedicated entirely to the world’s most iconic Japanese feline, Hello Kitty. Fans will love the immersive themed areas and colourful character experiences.
Legoland Tokyo – Part of the global LEGO theme-park network, this location is beautifully designed and full of small details. It is best suited for younger children up to about age 9-11; teenagers may find it less engaging.
Ueno Zoo – One of Tokyo’s most fascinating attractions, this historic zoo showcases native Japanese species such as pandas, snow leopards, tigers, elephants and polar bears, making it enjoyable for all ages.
Edo-Tokyo Museum – A unique museum that tells the story of Tokyo through intricate miniature models and historical displays. It highlights the city’s heritage, craftsmanship and evolution.
Hitachi Seaside Park – About 2.5 hours from Tokyo, this vast floral park becomes a once-in-a-lifetime sight when millions of seasonal flowers bloom simultaneously. Several times a year the hills are covered in extraordinary colours.
National Museum of Nature and Science – One of the city’s best museums, which already says a lot considering Tokyo’s high standards. Its hands-on exhibitions make it especially appealing for children.

Attractions in Kyoto
Kyoto offers families a completely different atmosphere from Tokyo. Here, ancient traditions, temples and peaceful gardens create a serene backdrop for travel. While the city is historically oriented, children still find plenty to enjoy thanks to several unusual and interactive attractions.
Iwatayama Monkey Park – Located near the famous Bamboo Forest, this hillside park is home to free-roaming Japanese macaques. Visitors can walk among the monkeys, admire panoramic views and observe their behaviour up close. It is essential to follow the rules: do not touch the monkeys and avoid direct eye contact.
Kyoto City Zoo – A pleasant zoo featuring animals from around the world, including elephants and tigers, as well as local Japanese species like macaques and bears. It is compact and family-friendly.
Samurai Museum – The samurai are one of the most fascinating symbols of Japanese culture. In the heart of Nishiki Market, visitors can explore samurai history, see traditional armour and weapons and even watch a modern-day samurai performance.
Kyoto Railway Museum – Japan prides itself on having one of the world’s best public transportation systems, and trains play a major cultural role. This museum is a surprising delight, especially for children up to age 10, with interactive exhibits and impressive train displays.
Nijō Castle – Built in the 17th century for Japan’s emperors, this fortress is a testament to the power and elegance of the shogun era. Today it operates as a museum showcasing the history of Kyoto. English-language guided tours are available and should be booked 2-3 days in advance.

Attractions in Osaka
Osaka is known for its lively energy, futuristic attractions and family-friendly entertainment. It blends modern city life with some of Japan’s most unique interactive experiences.
NIFREL Interactive Aquazoo – A one-of-a-kind concept combining an aquarium, zoo and art exhibit. Animals appear in immersive displays that make you feel almost as if rare creatures like tigers are walking beside you. Touching is not allowed. This innovative attraction is highly recommended for families.
Harukas 300 Observatory – Japan’s skyscrapers are impressive, but this particular building offers one of the most beautiful views in the region. A high-speed elevator brings you to the rooftop, where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset and a thrilling glass-floor area for the brave.

14-Day Itinerary in Japan with Children
Travelling in Japan is a blend of exploring vibrant megacities like Tokyo, where walking or using public transport is ideal, and visiting breathtaking natural sites best reached by a rental car. Distances can be significant, so this itinerary serves as a recommended framework. Japan offers countless routes and possibilities – if you need a customised itinerary or personal recommendations, feel free to reach out.
Day 1 – Arrival in Tokyo
Your first day, willingly or not, will be dedicated to settling in. The flight is very long, and the initial cultural shift upon landing in Tokyo can be overwhelming. We recommend heading straight to the hotel, resting for a bit and, if you feel up to it, taking an evening walk around the neighbourhood or briefly visiting the city centre.
Day 2 – Discovering Tokyo
Begin your day at the Imperial Palace, touring the grounds and the beautiful surrounding gardens. From there you can enjoy a view of the striking Nijūbashi Bridge, built entirely of stone over the palace moat.
Next, head to Sensō-ji Temple in northern Tokyo. Founded in the 7th century, this Buddhist temple is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks; entry is free, but visitors should respect local customs.
Continue to Nakamise Street, a lively market-like street filled with traditional snacks, souvenirs and a colourful atmosphere.
End your day at Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s tallest tower and one of the tallest in the world. It functions both as a shopping complex and an observation tower, offering breathtaking views from two decks at 350 m and 450 m. Express elevator tickets can be purchased to skip lines, which on weekends may exceed an hour.

Day 3 – Theme Park Day
Tokyo is home to many world-class parks – more than you will have time to visit – so choose one and dedicate the whole day to it. This break from sightseeing is ideal for children and allows the whole family to recharge through pure fun. Popular options near the city include:
• Fuji-Q Highland – Extraordinary roller coasters, some holding Guinness World Records, plus stunning views of Mount Fuji.
• Tokyo Disneyland – A classic favourite offering attractions for all ages, character encounters and the full Disney charm. Skip-the-line passes are available via the app.
• Tokyo DisneySea – A more adventurous, ocean-themed Disney park that appeals to both younger and older visitors.
Day 4 – More of Tokyo
To move around Tokyo efficiently, rely on the city’s excellent public transport. Consider purchasing travel passes for your entire stay.
Begin your day at Meiji Jingu, located in bustling Shibuya. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji – the first modern emperor – and his wife, the shrine welcomes more than 30 million visitors annually. A serene forest of over 100,000 trees surrounds the site. Entry is free; the southern garden requires a ticket and is famous for its June iris bloom.
Next, walk to Takeshita Street, a trendy street known for its cafés, fashion boutiques and vibrant youth culture.
The wider Harajuku area is a hub for creative street fashion, unique shops and endless crowds.
No visit to Shibuya is complete without experiencing its iconic scramble crossing and electric night atmosphere.
If time allows, stop by Omotesandō Hills, an upscale shopping and entertainment complex built both above and below ground.
End your evening in Shinjuku, a lively district offering neon lights, nightlife and an immersive urban experience.

Day 5 – Final Day in Tokyo
Start the day on the futuristic artificial island Odaiba in Tokyo Bay, accessible via a special elevated train. The island is packed with attractions, including stunning views of the bay. We recommend visiting two exceptional museums:
- Miraikan – National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation – A fascinating showcase of Japanese technology, innovation and space sciences.
- TeamLab Planets – A sensory, immersive digital-art experience blending technology and creativity. Advance booking is essential.
After this modern immersion, shift gears and visit Tsukiji Outer Market, famous for its enormous variety of seafood. In the early morning, tuna auctions take place nearby.
Continue to Ameyoko Market, also known as “the candy market.” With over 400 shops crammed into just 500 metres of lively streets, it is one of Tokyo’s most popular shopping spots.
Finish the day in Akihabara, the heart of Japanese pop culture, anime and electronics. It is a crowded but fascinating blend of futuristic stores and otaku culture.

Total travel time today is approximately 5.5 hours, so plan accordingly.
Day 9 – Journey Toward Kyoto
Start your morning at Miyagawa Morning Market in Takayama, where vendors offer local produce, snacks and crafts.
Then continue to the nearby village of Hida, home to a preserved traditional district with wooden houses and historic courtyards. A walk through the Sanmachi area reveals narrow streets full of charm and atmosphere.
Next, visit Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village known for its thatched-roof farmhouses.
If time allows, you may visit Kanazawa, a former samurai capital. Alternatively, return to Takayama, drop off the rental car and take a train to Kyoto.

Day 10 – Discovering Kyoto
Kyoto is not only one of Japan’s most beautiful cities but also one of the most historically significant. Once the imperial capital, it was spared bombing during World War II, preserving its streets, temples and cultural heritage. Although often considered more suited to adults, it is easy to combine child-friendly activities within the city’s serene atmosphere.
Start the day at Heian-jingū Shrine, built to celebrate 1,100 years of the city’s founding and surrounded by elegant gardens. Then walk to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, located in a large, picturesque park.
After a short break, visit Nijō Castle, built roughly 450 years ago for the legendary leader of the samurai.
Finish the day at the Samurai Museum in Nishiki Market, where you can explore samurai history and even watch a performance.
Day 11 – Nara
Just a short train ride from Kyoto, Nara is an ideal day trip. Begin at Tōdai-ji Temple, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and home to a massive bronze Buddha statue.
Adjacent to the temple is Nara Park, a beautiful green space where friendly deer roam freely. According to legend, they are sacred messengers of the gods and protectors of peace.
If time allows, you may visit other local shrines. Otherwise, return to Kyoto and end your day at Kinkaku-ji, the famed Golden Pavilion built beside a serene lake. The temple is breathtaking any time of day, especially near sunset, and easily reached by public transport.

Day 12 – Bamboo Forest & Monkey Park
Wake up early and travel to the Arashiyama area. Begin at the Bamboo Forest, where towering bamboo stalks create one of the most iconic landscapes in the world. The walk is enchanting and unforgettable.
From there, hike up the hill to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. The climb includes many steps, but the reward is worth it: a mountaintop viewpoint and close encounters with Japanese macaques.
Afterwards, take the train to Osaka, the final city of your trip.
Day 13 – Universal Studios Japan
Dedicate the entire day to exploring this incredible theme park, filled with thrilling rides, immersive worlds and family attractions. It is one of the top highlights for children and teenagers.

Seasonal Weather and Climate in Japan
When planning a trip to Japan, it is important to understand the country’s climate. Japan consists of four main islands and many smaller ones, influenced heavily by surrounding oceans. Because of its size and varied geography, weather conditions differ significantly by region. Consider the type of trip you want and the areas you plan to visit.
Japan also experiences natural phenomena such as cold winters in some areas, summer typhoons and high humidity. These factors should be considered when planning your itinerary.
Spring
Spring is one of the most recommended seasons for visiting Japan. From mid-March, when winter begins to fade, until the end of May, before the summer heat arrives, the weather is pleasant and ideal for travel. With good timing, visitors may witness the stunning cherry blossom season, which lasts only a short time.

Summer
Summer lasts from June to mid-September and is characterised by heat and high humidity, which can sometimes make sightseeing difficult.
Another important consideration is the possibility of typhoons, which may disrupt travel plans. Proper planning and destination selection are essential for summer vacations in Japan.
Autumn
From September to November, the air becomes cooler and more comfortable. Humidity drops, making it one of the best seasons for exploring the islands. Rainy or chilly days may occur, but the vibrant autumn foliage across Japan more than compensates for it.
Winter
Japan’s winter is cold and dry. While temperatures typically range between 0°C and 10°C in most regions, walking outside can feel quite chilly. January is the coldest month, and some areas – including major cities – may experience occasional snowfall.
