My love for Japan began the moment I arrived in Tokyo. The country amazed me with its harmony of ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, breathtaking nature, and a culture unlike any other. Since then, Japan has become a part of my life, and I return there again and again. Today I help travelers discover the real Japan: I create personalized itineraries, give lectures, and prepare guests for their unforgettable journey. I would be delighted to open Japan for you too!

In recent years, Japan has become a very popular destination among Israeli travellers. This leading Asian country is one of the most intriguing and unique in the world. The blend of Japan’s distinctive Asian culture with its strong connection to the Western world creates a fascinating mosaic with endless travel possibilities – from vibrant, exciting cities that differ greatly from one another, to wild nature and breathtaking landscapes. With thousands of years of history and culture, Japan has shaped a proud and singular nation.

Travelling in Japan with children is not only possible but highly recommended. You will discover how easy it is to adapt to Japanese customs, how kind and welcoming your hosts are, and how generously the country treats its visitors.

Japan is a vast and diverse country with countless travel opportunities. The itinerary presented here is suitable for a 14-day trip covering the country’s main highlights. The route focuses on the central area between Tokyo and Osaka, although Japan has much more to offer.

For any questions, requests, or if you need a personalised itinerary, the Itinerary Expert is always here for you.

14-Day Itinerary in Japan

Day 1: Arrival in Tokyo

Flying with children of any age is not simple. A long-haul flight to a distant country, with total travel time ranging from 15 to 24 hours (including connections), is challenging. Add jet lag and cultural change, and the first day can feel exhausting. For this reason, the Itinerary Expert recommends heading straight to your hotel in Tokyo, settling in, resting for a while, and taking a short walk around the area. The real trip begins the next day.

Tokyo is a world of its own. You can find everything here – museums, religious and spiritual sites, luxurious shopping centres and stunning parks. It is recommended to use public transport in Tokyo and avoid driving. Depending on your family and preferred travel style, you may also choose to walk between attractions. Remember: you cannot do everything. This itinerary is a recommendation and provides a general framework for the day. You do not need to follow every point, and you can always return to places you particularly liked on another day.

Day 2: The Old City

To immerse yourself in the Japanese atmosphere as quickly as possible, begin the day at the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This impressive residence of the Emperor is surrounded by beautiful gardens. During your visit, do not miss the charming view of Nijo Bridge.

Continuing the classic Tokyo tour, head to the famous Senso-ji Temple, completed more than 1,300 years ago and considered one of the city’s major tourist attractions.

In the second half of the day, visit the ancient Nakamise Market in the Asakusa district – a lively street lined with food stalls, shops and a distinctive local atmosphere.

End the day at Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in Japan, where you can enjoy a spectacular city view and explore the entertainment complex inside.

Day 3: Shibuya Area

The day begins with a visit to Meiji Jingu, located in the distinctive Shibuya area. It is best to arrive early, as the site is both beautiful and very popular. The temple, built in honour of Emperor Meiji, is considered spiritually significant. The surrounding forest – created by planting trees brought from all over Japan – is also well worth a walk.

To change the pace a little after the temple visit, head to Takeshita Street in Harajuku. This trendy district is full of fascinating shops, cafés and a lively atmosphere.

No visit to Shibuya is complete without stopping by the iconic crossing near the station, with its famous pedestrian scramble and the constant flow of people day and night.

Day 4: Theme Parks

Since this trip is designed for families with children, after two days of cultural exploration it is a good time to change the atmosphere. Several parks near Tokyo are located slightly outside the city but are easily accessible by public transport. Each option below is a full-day activity, and it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance.

Fuji-Q Highland – a park known for breaking several Guinness World Records in roller coasters. While it specialises in fast, long and thrilling rides, it also offers attractions suitable for all ages, along with beautiful views of Mount Fuji.

Tokyo Disneyland – the Japanese branch of the world-famous American experience. The park includes character encounters, parades and themed worlds offering a variety of fun activities.

DisneySea – a park that blends Disney stories with marine- and ocean-themed environments. It is slightly more suitable for older visitors, but guests of every age will find something to enjoy.

Day 5: Last Day in Tokyo

Tokyo is a significant technological powerhouse, and this day highlights some of its innovation. Start on Odaiba Island, originally built in the 19th century to protect the city and later transformed into a modern high-tech hub reached by a special train.

Begin with a view of Tokyo Bay, then choose one or more of the island’s unique museums – each offering a distinct experience. At least one of the following is recommended:

Miraikan – a science and space museum showcasing Japan’s advanced approach to technology.
TeamLab Planets – an immersive sensory experience combining digital technology with extraordinary artistic installations.

Tickets for both museums should be booked in advance.

The island also offers additional attractions, including shopping centres and visitor centres operated by major companies such as Toyota. Still, it is recommended to return to the city and visit two special markets:

Tsukiji Outer Market – a legendary fish market offering a vast variety of seafood and an engaging sensory atmosphere.
Ameyoko Shopping District – the colourful “candy market,” known for over 400 shops spread along a lively 500-metre street.

End the day in Akihabara, where you can explore Japanese anime culture, pop culture and a wide range of electronics – a striking combination of tradition and modern innovation.

Tokyo is extremely large, and many travellers spend far more than four to five days exploring it. If you wish to plan a route that stays close to Tokyo, the Itinerary Expert will gladly assist.

Day 6: From Tokyo to Hakone

After experiencing the energy of Tokyo, it is time to explore a different side of Japan – open landscapes, lakes and nature. On this day, it is recommended to rent a car (preferably booked in advance) and drive to the beautiful area of Hakone.

The drive takes about two hours. Begin your visit at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, a unique outdoor space featuring sculptures by artists from around the world. The combination of artwork and scenery creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

Spend the remainder of the day relaxing in one of Hakone’s excellent hotels.

Day 7: The Fuji Five Lakes Region

The volcanic activity of Mount Fuji created five distinct lakes in this region. Today is dedicated to exploring the area, with the impressive presence of the mountain accompanying you throughout the day.

Start with a panoramic viewpoint at Panorama-dai, offering beautiful scenery and ideal photo opportunities. Fog may occasionally limit visibility, so it is worth keeping this in mind.

Continue to Lake Yamanakako, where you can rent bicycles for a scenic ride around the lake. The route takes about two and a half hours and provides wonderful views with Mount Fuji in the background.

If you still have energy, proceed to Ohiroyama and enjoy a walking trail leading toward the summit.

Day 8: From Hakone to Takayama

This day involves a longer drive, so it is best to prepare accordingly and leave early. The first stop after leaving Hakone is Chureito Pagoda, one of the most striking and picturesque pagodas in Japan. Travellers arriving in spring will enjoy an especially beautiful view thanks to the blooming cherry blossoms.

Continue with a two-hour drive toward Matsumoto Castle, a 400-year-old fortress that is impressive both in structure and history. Combine your castle visit with a short walk in the surrounding town before heading to your final destination of the day – the city of Takayama.

Day 9: From Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa and Kyoto

If you wish, begin the morning at the Takayama market, then continue to the traditional village of Shirakawa-go, famous for its distinctive thatched-roof houses. From there, drive to Kanazawa, regarded as the historic centre of the samurai.

A visit to Kenroku-en Garden is a must – it is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan. Afterwards, walk to the nearby Kanazawa Castle for an additional glimpse into the city’s cultural heritage.

If time allows, take a short stroll through the Nagamachi Samurai District, where the historic character of the city is especially evident.

At the end of the day, depending on your preference, return your car and take the train to Kyoto, or continue driving to Kyoto and return the car there.

Spend your first full day in Kyoto visiting essential landmarks:

  • Nijo Castle – built in the 16th century for the shogun.
  • Kyoto Imperial Palace – surrounded by beautiful gardens in the centre of a spacious park.
  • Heian-jingu Shrine – constructed for the city’s 1100-year anniversary and set within landscaped gardens.
  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) – a magnificent temple known for its golden exterior and its reflection shimmering across the pond.

Day 14: Osaka City Centre and Return to Tokyo Airport

Your day in Osaka is dedicated to several key attractions within the city. Depending on your schedule and the time of your train back to Tokyo Airport, here is the recommended plan – whatever you manage to see will be worthwhile.

Begin slightly outside the city centre at NIFREL Interactive Aquazoo, a futuristic zoo designed with immersive animal displays. The exhibits create an engaging experience where you may find yourself walking beside a powerful tiger or a gentle panda.

Return to the city centre to visit Osaka Castle, a 58-metre-tall landmark showcasing Japanese architectural skill. The structure is one of Osaka’s most recognisable icons and offers insight into the city’s rich past.

A favourite attraction for both children and adults is the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, featuring four thematic worlds filled with fish, marine creatures and a variety of displays – all presented with distinctive Japanese design elements.

If time allows, continue to the Abeno Harukas 300 observatory, located in the tallest building in the city. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of Osaka Bay and explore the shopping centre within the complex.

After your visit, make your way to the shinkansen station and enjoy the efficiency of Japanese railway technology on a fast ride back to Tokyo Airport, concluding the itinerary.
