My love for Japan began the moment I arrived in Tokyo. The country amazed me with its harmony of ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, breathtaking nature, and a culture unlike any other. Since then, Japan has become a part of my life, and I return there again and again. Today I help travelers discover the real Japan: I create personalized itineraries, give lectures, and prepare guests for their unforgettable journey. I would be delighted to open Japan for you too!

Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is one of the most unique and memorable attractions in Kyoto. Nestled in the scenic Arashiyama area, the park is a must-visit for nature lovers, families, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. This guide provides everything you need to know to plan your visit, including how to get there, what to do, and important information for tourists.

Things to Do at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama

Unique Wildlife Experiences

Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is home to around 120 Japanese monkeys. The park offers a rare opportunity to observe these semi-wild creatures in their natural habitat. While the monkeys are accustomed to human presence, they remain wild, allowing visitors to experience real wildlife behavior. The park’s location at the top of Arashiyama offers stunning panoramic views of Kyoto, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. As you wander the park, you’ll see monkeys hanging from trees, interacting with each other, and engaging in various social behaviors. This is a fantastic chance to observe these fascinating creatures up close while respecting their space.

A Scenic Hike to the Top

To reach the park, take a short hike along a well-maintained trail through a lush, moss-covered forest. The hike takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on your fitness level. It’s not particularly strenuous, but some sections are steep. Along the way, there is a “monkey quiz” offering interesting facts about Japanese monkeys, allowing you to get into the “monkey mood” before arriving at the park.

Kyoto’s Spectacular Scenery

At the summit, the Monkey Park rewards you with a breathtaking view of Kyoto, the Katsura River, and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you might even spot landmarks such as Kyoto Tower in the distance.

Feeding the Monkeys

One of the most memorable experiences at Iwatayama Monkey Park is feeding the monkeys. Visitors can buy food (apple chunks and peanuts) at the feeding hut, which is safely enclosed by wire netting. You can then feed the monkeys through the netting while keeping a safe distance. This provides a rare opportunity to interact with the monkeys while maintaining their natural behaviors.

Tips for Tourists

Clothing

Wear comfortable walking shoes as you’ll need to hike uphill to reach the park. Dress in layers suitable for forest walking and bring a hat and sunscreen if visiting on a sunny day. The weather in Kyoto can change quickly, so it’s wise to pack a light jacket, especially in the cooler months.

Observe the Rules

When visiting, there are a few important rules to follow:

  • Do not stare into the monkeys’ eyes: This can be perceived as a sign of aggression.
  • Do not touch the monkeys: While the monkeys are used to humans, they are still wild animals and should not be treated as pets.
  • Do not feed the monkeys outside of designated areas: This prevents aggressive behavior and allows the monkeys to retain their natural foraging instincts.

Best Season to Visit

The park is open year-round, with each season offering something unique. Spring and fall are particularly popular for the stunning cherry blossoms and vibrant autumn foliage. If you wish to see the famous “snow monkeys,” winter is the best time, although the monkeys at Arashiyama are active and fascinating throughout the year.
