Pitigliano, also known as “Little Jerusalem,” is a picturesque medieval hilltop village in southern Tuscany. With its unique architecture, rich history, and vibrant community life, the village offers an unusual blend of ancient culture and local warmth. For travelers looking to explore off the beaten path, Pitigliano promises a truly immersive experience. In this guide, we offer essential tips for visiting this hidden gem of Tuscany, must-see attractions, and ways to make the most of your visit.

What to See and Do

  • Stroll Through the Historic Jewish Quarter
The Jewish quarter of Pitigliano, with its synagogue dating back to the 16th century, is one of the village’s most fascinating aspects. Expelled from the Papacy, Jewish families took refuge here, leaving a lasting cultural legacy. Stroll through the narrow streets, visit the historic Jewish oven, and stop by the small yet iconic Jewish cemetery.
Highlights: Be sure to taste the local Jewish dish, sfratto, a spicy treat symbolizing the resilience of the community.
  • Visit Fortress Orsini and Piazza Rocca
Built in the 14th century and renovated by architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the Fortress of Orsini proudly preserves the feudal period of Pitigliano. The original ramparts and ridgepole provide a glimpse of medieval architecture, while the nearby Piazza della Rocca offers stunning views of the town and surrounding valley.
Tip: For a great photo op, take a picture of the Medici aqueduct near Piazza della Rocca. This 16th-century structure is both an engineering marvel and a beautiful backdrop.

  • Walk Through the Caves of Vier
For history and hiking enthusiasts, the Vie Caves (Etruscan Trails) around Pitigliano are a must-see. These ancient pathways carved into volcanic rock are shrouded in mystery; their purpose remains unknown, though some believe they were used for religious ceremonies, while others suggest they were trade routes.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight.
  • See the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is a beautiful 18th-century building of great cultural value. With its single nave and elegant facade, the cathedral represents both religious heritage and local artistry. Nearby, the Loggia del Palazzo della Comunità and the Orsini Monument add further historical richness to the area.
Hours of Operation: The museum is usually open from morning to evening, though hours may vary, so check local schedules.
