Bioparc Doué-La-Fontaine
Located in the scenic town of Due-la-Fontaine, Bioparc de Due-la-Fontaine is a remarkable zoo that attracts visitors with its innovative design and commitment to nature conservation. Created on the site of a former limestone quarry, this unique park seamlessly blends animal habitats into the rocky landscape, creating an educational, thrilling, and memorable experience.
Highlights and Must-See Attractions
- Valley of the Rhinoceros
The Valley of the Rhinoceros, a recreation of the African plains, offers visitors an up-close look at the magnificent rhino life. This vast habitat required extensive landscaping, including the planting of more than 1,500 trees. Visitors can interact with goats in the nearby petting zoo, and there is a tunnel where visitors can tour a mongoose enclosure. - South American Aviary
One of the largest aviaries in Europe, this habitat features more than 500 birds, including flamingos, spoonbills, and penguins. Walking through the aviary, you will feel as if you are in a South American rainforest. The birds move freely around you, making it a great photo opportunity.
- Okapi Sanctuary
The Okapi Sanctuary houses one of the world’s rarest animals, the okapi, in a large, net-covered quarry. The sanctuary is also home to several species of African birds, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of biodiversity. - Ghosts of the Himalayas
This dramatic exhibit showcases snow leopards, ibex, and vultures in habitats that reflect the rugged terrain of the Himalayas. The enclosure has been carefully designed to create a “ghostly” atmosphere, allowing guests to glimpse these animals from a variety of viewpoints, including a thrilling tunnel that leads directly into their environment. The vulture feeding is particularly fascinating and informative. - Giraffe Camp and Dining Options
One of the unique dining experiences at Bioparc is the restaurant overlooking Giraffe Camp. This picturesque location allows diners to enjoy their meal with giraffes and zebras in the foreground. While picnicking is not allowed inside the park, there are designated picnic tables outside the park entrance, and visitors can easily re-enter with a re-entry stamp after lunch.

Tips for Enjoying Your Visit
- Arrive Early: The zoo is quite large for a one-day visit, so arriving early will allow you to experience all the exhibits at your leisure.
- Be Prepared to Walk: Due to its location in a former quarry, there are some slightly inclined paths and long walks. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended, especially in summer.
- Stay Hydrated: Water fountains are available throughout the park. Note that no picnics are allowed inside, so use the kiosks and cafes.
- Don’t Miss Feeding Times: Watching the animals interact during feeding time is a highlight for many visitors. The lion feeding is especially popular as the food is delivered via cable car, showcasing the lions’ strength and agility.

Nature Conservation and Bioparc’s Mission
Bioparc de Due-la-Fontaine is both a zoo and a conservationist hub. Each habitat is carefully constructed to provide a natural environment that supports the physical and mental well-being of the animals. The park also participates in a worldwide breeding program aimed at reintroducing endangered species into the wild. It is a place not only to see animals but also to learn about the importance of protecting these species and their environments.
