My name is Jena Hovor. I found myself in France in 2010 after graduating from journalism school, when I decided to take a short break before starting my career. What was supposed to be a three-month trip turned into my destiny and a lifelong passion. France captivated me with its incredible diversity: from the lavender fields of Provence to the majestic cliffs of Étretat, from the snow-capped peaks of the Alps to the sandy beaches of the French Riviera. Each region revealed a new facet of the French soul – the gastronomic abundance of Burgundy, the architectural heritage of Alsace, the wild beauty of Corsica, and the mysterious Brittany with its Celtic roots. Over 14 years, I've cycled more than 15,000 kilometers on French roads, explored all 13 metropolitan regions and overseas territories. I've created over 170 original routes, many of which pass through authentic villages and secret places known only to locals. I speak French, English, and Russian fluently, and have mastered the Provençal dialect. I still discover new corners of this amazing country every day. I am convinced that the real France lives not only in Paris and famous tourist spots, but also in small family wineries, local farmers' markets, and ancient castles hidden among vineyards.

Lake Capitello

Located in the heart of Corsica at an elevation of 1,930 meters, Lake Capitello is a stunning glacial lake known for its deep blue waters and the dramatic peaks surrounding it. Getting to Lake Capitello

To reach Lake Capitello, start your journey in the charming town of Corte, the gateway to the Restonica Valley. From Corte, it is about 16 km to the Grotel sheep pen, the starting point for the hike to the lake.

The hike to Lake Mélo (Lac de Mélo) takes about 1 hour and is relatively easy, making it suitable for families and casual hikers. The trail from Lac de Mélo to Lac Capitello takes another 45 minutes and is somewhat more challenging. The trail is well-maintained but rocky, so be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Lake Capitello is from late spring to early fall (May through October), when the climate is generally more conducive to hiking. Lake Capitello is frozen for about 8 months of the year, so summer is the ideal time to enjoy its beautiful blue waters.

Hiking Preparation

Shoes: Wear sturdy hiking boots for the rocky trail.
Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.

A Spectacular View

If you are willing to venture further, the Breche de Capitello (Capitello Pass), located on the GR20 hiking trail, is a must-see viewpoint. Situated at 2,200 meters above sea level, this high pass offers panoramic views of both lakes and the surrounding peaks, including Monte d’Oro. This lookout requires a 700-meter climb from the Manganu refuge, but the breathtaking views are well worth the effort.

Leave Early: To fully enjoy the hike and the lake, depart early in the day. This will allow you to experience the lake in the morning light, enhancing the vibrant colors of the water.
Respect Nature: The lake and surrounding area are protected, so it is essential to follow the “Leave No Trace” principle. Take what you bring with you and respect the wildlife and vegetation.
Watch for Wildlife: Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various species of birds and grazing animals such as cattle.
Safety: Be aware that the trail can be slippery, especially after rain. To minimize environmental impact and ensure safety, always follow the marked paths.

Points of Interest Not to Be Missed

Cascade de Zangre: On your way to the lake, be sure to visit the Cascade de Zangre, a series of picturesque rock pools and waterfalls that form part of the Agnone River.
Spasimata Bridge: If time permits, stop by the Spasimata Bridge for a beautiful view of the Agnone River and the surrounding valley.
