Principality of Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is one of Europe’s smallest yet most surprising destinations – a quiet Alpine principality surrounded by mountains on all sides. Serene landscapes, peaceful villages and wide panoramic viewpoints create an ideal setting for a relaxed family holiday. Despite its size, the country offers a well-balanced mix of nature, soft adventure, good food and cultural stops that children can enjoy too. Families looking for beautiful scenery, easy outdoor activities, cosy cafés and a touch of royal charm will find Liechtenstein perfect for a calm but memorable vacation.
How to Get to Liechtenstein and What Is the Best Transport for Families?
Reaching Liechtenstein is easier than it might seem. The country has no airport or railway network, so most visitors arrive via Switzerland. The simplest option is to fly into Zurich and then continue by rental car or Swiss bus directly to Vaduz.
Buses inside the country run efficiently and reach most places within minutes. However, for families with children, a rental car is usually more comfortable and significantly faster, especially when visiting mountain villages or planning hikes.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: On my first trip, I relied only on buses. They were punctual, but the winding Alpine roads made the journey slow with kids. On my next visit, I switched to a rental car, saved nearly an hour each day and could stop easily for spontaneous photos.
Inside Vaduz, the local bus completes a full loop in about 17 minutes, which works well for quick exploration of the town. For higher areas such as Triesenberg or Malbun, however, driving is clearly the easier and more convenient option.

Liechtenstein offers a different experience in each season, allowing families to choose the atmosphere that suits their travel style.
Summer (June-September) is the best time for Alpine scenery. The weather is pleasant, the days are long and visibility is excellent. This season is ideal for scenic hikes in the Alps, panoramic walks around Vaduz Castle, picnics in the Rhine Valley and open-air festivals, including National Day on 15 August, when celebrations take place below Vaduz Castle.
Winter (December-March) is perfect for a family ski holiday. Malbun becomes the country’s cosy winter centre, offering gentle slopes for beginners, ski schools, compact ski areas and mountain cafés serving warm dishes.
Spring and Autumn are ideal for travellers who prefer mild temperatures, fewer visitors and peaceful walks. These seasons also offer relaxed vineyard experiences and quiet strolls through the Rhine Valley.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: For the clearest views and the best photos – especially around Vaduz Castle or Triesenberg – arrive early in the morning when the air is at its sharpest.

Vaduz and Beyond – What Are the Best Cities and Attractions in Liechtenstein?
Vaduz – What Can Families See in the Capital?
Despite its small size, Vaduz offers a rich collection of places that families can explore comfortably.
Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz)
The country’s most iconic landmark stands above the city with dramatic views over the Rhine Valley. Entry is not permitted, as the castle is home to the princely family, but the walk to the viewpoints is absolutely worthwhile. The trails are well-marked and the atmosphere feels almost storybook-like.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: I once walked down after sunset – not recommended. There are no lights on the path, so it’s best to visit during the day.
Families can also enjoy the open-air tourist train “Chu-Chu”, which circles the town and stops at convenient photo points.
Liechtenstein National Museum
A surprisingly large and engaging museum featuring natural history displays, interactive exhibits, archaeology, traditional costumes and a 3D model of the entire country. Children particularly enjoy the colourful sections and animal displays.
Postage Stamp Museum
Liechtenstein’s stamps are renowned, sometimes printed on silk or wood. The museum is small, child-friendly and perfect for a short, easy stop.
Treasure Chamber (Schatzkammer)
A unique exhibition showcasing royal artefacts, rare objects and exceptional pieces such as Fabergé works and moon rocks.
Art Museum (Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein)
A striking modern black-cube building presenting contemporary art. It is compact, clear and easy to combine with a walk through the city.
Malbun – What Makes It the Best Family Resort in the Country?
Malbun is Liechtenstein’s main mountain and ski resort. It offers 23 km of ski slopes, a dedicated Kinderland zone for children, summer hiking trails, via ferrata routes for older teens and peaceful alpine fields perfect for relaxed walks. For parents who want a safe, compact and manageable ski destination, Malbun is one of the easiest options in the Alps.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: Parking near the lifts is limited on busy weekends. Arrive before 10:00 to secure a convenient spot.

Triesenberg – Why Do Families Love the Views Here?
Triesenberg sits high above the Rhine Valley and offers some of the most impressive panoramas in the country. The village preserves the rare Walser dialect, one of Europe’s unique linguistic traditions.
In autumn, it hosts a traditional Walser cuisine festival with hearty mountain dishes.
The village is also the starting point for many scenic hikes, including routes toward the impressive “Three Sisters” (Drei Schwestern) mountain area.

Schaan – What Can Families Explore in Liechtenstein’s Oldest Town?
Schaan is one of the oldest settlements in the country and combines history with gentle activities suitable for families. Visitors can find Roman foundations, easy walking routes, the lively Liechtenstein Life festival and a small museum dedicated to calculators and typewriters – a pleasant surprise for older children.
Schaan is also a convenient starting point for bus routes and excursions across northern and central Liechtenstein.
Nendeln & Eschen – What Are the Highlights in the North?
These two quiet villages offer an authentic, peaceful atmosphere. Highlights include the ruins of a Roman villa in Nendeln, the historic pottery workshop Schädler Keramik (established in 1836) and gentle panoramic paths well-suited for families with young children.
What Are the Most Beautiful Nature Spots in Liechtenstein?
Alpine Valleys and Mountain Trails
Liechtenstein is entirely located within the Alps, making the entire country naturally scenic. Families can enjoy gentle forest paths, panoramic ridges, wildflower meadows and peaceful protected landscapes with very few natural hazards. These trails work well for children and offer plenty of opportunities for quiet exploration.
Rhine Valley
The Rhine Valley is a wide green landscape with traditional wooden farmhouses, grazing cows and open meadows. It is perfect for relaxed family walks, easy cycling or even paragliding for parents looking for a mild adventure.
Eschnerberg Trail
This 15-km panoramic route connects Schellenberg and Bendern. It passes prehistoric sites, quiet forests and high viewpoints. Families often choose short sections of the trail, which are easier and still offer beautiful scenery.
Three Sisters (Drei Schwestern)
One of the most iconic rocky formations in the region. The area includes dramatic views and spectacular terrain. Some sections of the hike require proper footwear and are better suited for families with older children.
Tip from the Itinerary Expert: On hot summer days, start early. Mountain weather can change quickly, and mornings offer the safest and most comfortable conditions for families.

Families can take panoramic walks around Vaduz Castle, explore simple nature trails in Malbun, and feed farm animals in the Rhine Valley. The Liechtenstein National Museum offers interactive rooms that keep children engaged, while the Postage Stamp Museum allows kids to explore stamp collections and even create personalised designs.
Another favourite is the small tourist train in Vaduz, which offers a relaxed way to see the town without extra walking. In winter, Malbun features short mountain lifts and gentle slopes that are ideal for young children and beginners.

Is Liechtenstein a Good Destination for Families Seeking Safety and Quiet?
Yes. Liechtenstein is widely considered one of the safest destinations in Europe, and its calm atmosphere is one of its greatest advantages for families. Streets are clean, the pace of life is slow and pleasant, and the surroundings feel peaceful at any time of day. Parents can let children explore with confidence while enjoying the quiet Alpine environment without stress.

Traveler Reviews – Liechtenstein
- Emily Carter – July 2021
We visited Vaduz with our family last summer, and the walk up to Vaduz Castle was the highlight. The views over the Rhine Valley looked almost unreal, like a painted backdrop. We knew the castle wasn’t open inside, but the trail around it was peaceful and ideal for photos. Walking down after sunset was difficult – there are no lights – so it’s better to go earlier. - Daniel Brooks – May 2019
Liechtenstein surprised us with how calm it is. We spent an afternoon at the Liechtenstein National Museum, and even our kids enjoyed the natural history exhibits and the 3D map. The museum is larger than it appears from the outside. The only drawback was that many signs were in German, but the staff were very helpful. - Sarah Mitchell – October 2024
We drove up to Triesenberg, and the views were far more impressive than we expected. The whole valley opens like a postcard. The Walser village atmosphere made the visit feel special. The roads are narrow and winding, so driving requires attention, but it’s worth it. - Michael Adams – August 2018
We were in Vaduz during National Day, and it was magical. Seeing the princely family step out of the castle was unforgettable. The town becomes one big festival with food stalls and music. It’s crowded but friendly, and our kids enjoyed the fireworks. - Olivia Bennett – March 2023
Malbun was perfect for our beginner skiers. Everything is compact, so managing equipment and children was easy. Kinderland was fantastic for our youngest. Arrive early – parking near the slopes fills quickly, especially on weekends. - Adam Reynolds – September 2022
We walked part of the Eschnerberg Trail, and it was exactly the peaceful break we needed. Quiet forests, easy paths and wide views. The trail isn’t difficult, but some sections are steeper than expected, so bring water and good shoes. - Laura Thompson – April 2021
The Postage Stamp Museum was a short but charming visit. My daughter enjoyed creating her own mini-stamp. I didn’t expect to see stamps printed on silk or wood – it was more interesting than we thought. A perfect activity for a rainy day in Vaduz. - Jacob Harris – June 2024
We visited the castle hill early in the morning, and the light was beautiful for photos. The only downside was that some tourists tried to approach the private entrance, and the guard had to intervene. Still, the visit was unforgettable for our family. - Megan Lewis – December 2019
The National Museum was one of the highlights of our winter trip. We spent almost three hours there because the kids kept discovering new rooms – animals, archaeology and even football history. The café inside was warm and cosy after the cold walk outdoors. - Christopher Hall – August 2023
We tried paragliding in the Rhine Valley, and it ended up being one of the most memorable activities of our holiday. Even if you don’t fly, just watching the green fields below is spectacular. The valley feels like a real storybook. We wished we had stayed longer.

Tips from the Itinerary Expert
- Arrive early to Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz)
I learned the hard way that the path has no lighting after sunset. If you want panoramic photos without crowds, start the walk before 11:00. The morning light over the Rhine Valley is exceptional. - Use the Chu-Chu train in Vaduz when travelling with kids
When my children grew tired after the museum, the open-air Chu-Chu train saved the day. It’s a relaxing way to see the main spots without extra walking, especially on warm afternoons. - Park lower in the castle area – the closest spots are often restricted
There is a short “drive-through” zone near the castle, but stopping is not allowed. I usually park 250-300 metres downhill and walk up. It’s safer and avoids unnecessary issues with security. - Visit the National Museum earlier in the day
The museum is larger than it appears. With nature displays, archaeology and the large 3D topographic model, families typically need 1.5-2 hours. Staff are helpful when signs are only in German. - Combine the Stamp Museum with a stop at the Vaduz post office
If you collect stamps, the post office often sells limited editions that sell out quickly. Designing a personalised stamp was one of my daughter’s favourite moments. - Choose Malbun on weekdays for skiing
On weekends, the small parking area near the lifts becomes full very early. Arriving before 10:00 on weekdays allows easier access to Kinderland and calmer slopes for beginners. - Don’t underestimate the Eschnerberg Trail
Even short sections can be surprisingly steep. Bring water and comfortable footwear. On my first visit, I assumed the entire trail was flat because it was “family-friendly” – not always the case. - Plan Rhine Valley walks based on light
The valley is at its most beautiful between 17:00-18:00, when the sun hits the meadows at an angle. It’s the best time for photos and calm walking with children. - Try local wine in Vaduz – it’s rarely exported
Liechtenstein wine is difficult to find outside the country. Tasting it in a local cellar feels like discovering a hidden tradition. - In Triesenberg, drive slowly – the roads are narrow and winding
The climb offers some of the best panoramas in the Alps, but focus is essential, especially with children in the car. Take your time – the views are worth it.

Insights from the Itinerary Expert
I visited Liechtenstein in September 2023, and even after many years of exploring Europe, this small Alpine country surprised me more than expected. Everything feels close, calm and effortlessly beautiful – a perfect match for families who want nature without stress. I remember standing near Vaduz Castle early in the morning, watching the first light fall across the Rhine Valley. For a moment, it felt as if the entire landscape stood still.
For families, the simplicity of logistics is a major advantage. Malbun is one of the easiest mountain resorts I’ve visited with children – compact, peaceful and never overwhelming. The Liechtenstein National Museum offers enough interactive experiences to keep children curious without tiring them. The trails around Triesenberg impressed me the most; the panoramas are among the most generous I’ve seen in the Alps.
There are small challenges. The roads leading to the higher villages are narrow and winding, and walking down from the castle after sunset is not ideal because the path has no lights. However, these are easily avoided with simple planning.
Liechtenstein is a wonderful destination for families who love nature, views and a peaceful atmosphere. I invite you to create a personalised route with me – one that highlights the best of the country and turns your trip into a memorable Alpine journey.
