Parking – The Real Challenge

Parking in Lisbon and Porto is a genuine nightmare. Almost no street spots exist, spaces are narrow as matchboxes, and distances between cars measure about 3 centimeters. Finding a parking garage becomes the only solution for maintaining sanity.

Sometimes people will stand at parking spots claiming they’re “guarding” the space for €1. If you really need the spot and don’t want to return to a scratched car, giving them 50 cents is wise.

There’s a €600 fee for returning cars in a different country! This applies even if you rent a Portuguese car in Madrid and return it in Lisbon. Rental companies don’t always mention this clearly, so check beforehand.
