Expert Tips
Choose the region of France based on your travel style – Provence and the Loire Valley are ideal for peaceful trips, flower blooms, and wine routes; Alsace and Colmar are perfect for Christmas markets; the Alps are best for active holidays; the French Riviera (Nice, Cassis, Antibes) is ideal for beach and seaside vacations. There is no universal “best month” to visit France – it depends on your travel goals.
In small towns everything closes for lunch break – in Normandy, Provence, Bordeaux, and Burgundy, shops, pharmacies, and even gas stations close from 12:00 to 14:30. Restaurants do not work all day, but only during fixed hours. Plan shopping, refueling, and meals in advance – otherwise you may be left without food or fuel.
Parking in the countryside is more complicated than in Paris – in Annecy, Amboise, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, and Gordes, parking is either prohibited or limited to 2–3 hours. In historic centers, the “Zone Résidentielle” allows entry only for locals. Fines are issued automatically and sent to the rental company.
Never drive through rural France with an almost empty tank – in Limousin, Brittany, Provence, and the Pyrenees, many gas stations are automatic and accept only French cards. At night and on Sundays, they are often closed. Always keep at least ¼ of the tank if driving through villages.
Do not plan to visit two Loire castles in one day – distances may be short, but each castle requires 3–4 hours including gardens, parking, queues, and lunch. And it’s impossible to leave without trying local pies, cider, goat cheese, or pear tart.
