Nestled just a few kilometers from the bustling center of Naples, the Riserva Naturale Cratere degli Astroni is a serene oasis and a WWF nature reserve. This unique site, formed from an extinct volcano, offers visitors a chance to escape urban chaos and immerse themselves in nature. The reserve, spanning 247 hectares, is rich in flora and fauna, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and families alike.

What to See

Flora and Fauna

The Cratere degli Astroni was created by a series of eruptions between 4,100 and 3,800 years ago. The resulting volcanic landscape features three lakes—Lago Grande, Cofaniello Piccolo, and Cofaniello Grande—each supporting a variety of aquatic vegetation. The unique microclimate within the crater has led to a fascinating mix of Mediterranean and mesophilic species. Expect to see ancient trees like chestnut, oak, elm, and hornbeam alongside typical Mediterranean shrubs such as mastic, myrtle, and Phillyrea.

The reserve is home to over 130 species of birds, including the rare little bittern and the ferruginous duck, the latter of which nests only in this region of Campania. Mammals such as foxes, weasels, and the elusive Etruscan shrew also inhabit the area. Bird watchers will particularly enjoy the forest and lake areas, which serve as stopovers for migratory species like the purple heron, marsh harrier, and kingfisher.

Geological Features

The Cratere degli Astroni encompasses several significant geological formations, including the Colle dell’Imperatore and Colle della Rotondella. These hills, formed from past volcanic activity, add to the scenic diversity of the reserve. The crater itself, with its elliptical rim and well-preserved structure, offers a glimpse into the volcanic history of the Campi Flegrei area.

  • Respect Nature: Follow the marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry out any trash you bring in.
  • Plan Ahead: Some trails may be closed for maintenance or due to natural conditions, so check the reserve’s website for updates before your visit.
