Lake Molveno
Embraced by the majestic Brenta Dolomites (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Lake Molveno is an alpine oasis that attracts nature lovers, adventurers, and families. Known for its pristine waters, breathtaking mountain views, and wide range of activities, Lake Molveno has repeatedly earned the prestigious title of “Most Beautiful Lake in Italy.” Below are some tips, highlights, and the perfect sightseeing plan for visiting Lake Molveno.
Getting to Lake Molveno
Lake Molveno is conveniently located about 40 km from the city of Trento. Here’s how to access it:
- By Car: Take the A22 Autostrada del Brennero. From the south, exit at Trento Nord and follow the signs for Fai della Paganella, Andalo, and Molveno (about 25 km). From the north, exit at San Michele all’Adige and follow the same signs.
- By Train: Take the “Trento-Malè” train from Trento to Mezzolombardo and change to the bus (line 611) to Molveno.
- By Bus: From Trento, take line 751 to Mezzocorona, then transfer to line 611 to Molveno (Lake Molveno).
Best Season to Visit
For the least crowds and best conditions, visit in late spring (May) or early fall (September). Summer is warmest and offers a wide range of outdoor activities but tends to be crowded. Winter transforms the area into a snowy wonderland, ideal for skiing and snowshoeing.

Things to Do at Lake Molveno
Outdoor Activities
Lake Molveno is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Here are a few activities to try:
- Water Sports: Rent a kayak or canoe, try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), or enjoy a leisurely rowboat ride. The lake’s clear, calm waters are ideal for both beginners and experienced paddlers.
- Fishing: Lake Morveno is known for its rich aquatic life, making it a great spot to catch trout, arctic char, and perch. Be sure to check local regulations and obtain the necessary fishing licenses.
- Windsurfing: The “Ora del Garda” winds, which blow from March to October, create excellent conditions for windsurfing.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
For land-based activities, Lake Molveno serves as the gateway to some of the most scenic trails in the Dolomites:

Tips for Visitors
- Parking: Parking in town is limited, especially during peak season. The Ischia parking lot (5 minutes from the lake) offers ample spaces at reasonable rates (€2.50 per hour, €15 per day).

- Equipment Rentals: Various stores along the lake offer rentals, including kayaks, bicycles, paddleboards, and windsurfing gear.
- Respect for Nature: Help preserve Lake Morveno’s natural beauty by sticking to designated trails and cleaning up after yourself.
Winter Activities
Lake Molveno also attracts winter sports enthusiasts. The nearby Paganella ski area offers over 50 km of ski runs, accessible by bus from Morveno. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails make winter an appealing season for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
- Access: The lake is accessible year-round, though rental shops, stores, and restaurants may have seasonal hours.
Tickets: Entry to Lake Morveno is free, but activities like boat rentals, cable car rides, and admission to the wildlife park have additional fees (cable cars approximately €10-15).
