The Duomo di Siena (Siena Cathedral) is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that attracts visitors from around the world. Rising above the famous Piazza del Campo, this stunning cathedral is filled with artistic treasures and rich history. Whether you are a history buff or a casual traveler, the Duomo offers a wealth of experiences and sights not to be missed.

Treasures Inside

Step inside the cathedral and you will be amazed by its opulence. Unlike the austere interiors of Florence’s cathedrals, the Duomo is vibrant.

Artistic Highlights

  • Pavement: The floor of the cathedral is covered with 56 stunning marble etchings and inlaid mosaics created between 1369 and 1547 by 40 leading artists, including Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio. The intricate designs, depicting biblical scenes, are usually only shown to the public on special occasions such as the Palio in September and October.
  • Notable works of art: See Donatello’s “John the Baptist” and the stunning rose window by Duccio di Buoninsegna. The marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano is another highlight of outstanding craftsmanship.
  • Piccolomini Library This beautifully frescoed library in the cathedral is a must-see. It displays works by famous artists and is dedicated to the life of Pope Pius II, a family member from Siena.
