Its purpose was to connect Lucca with the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route leading to Rome. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly renovated, most notably in the 14th century by Castruccio Castracani, lord of Lucca. The bridge’s nickname comes from an old legend that the devil helped to build it.

According to local legend, the bridge’s designer made a pact with the devil, fearing that the construction would not be completed on time. The devil agreed to complete the bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross it. However, the clever townspeople outwitted the devil by letting the pigs cross first, and the devil, outraged, was vanquished. This dramatic story adds to the bridge’s appeal, making it not just a historical landmark, but a place of myth and legend.

The train ride offers beautiful views of the countryside and the bridge.
• Visiting Hours:
  The bridge is open 24 hours a day and can be visited at any time. However, to avoid crowds and to take beautiful pictures, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. Especially at dusk, the light casts a magical glow on the landscape. If you visit in the summer, you can expect warm weather and bright skies, while fall offers a quieter, more atmospheric experience.
