Nestled in the heart of Naples, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural splendor. Also known as the Duomo di Napoli, this monumental cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a cultural landmark that attracts visitors from around the world.

History and Architecture

Origins and Construction

The roots of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta can be traced back to the 13th century, during the reign of the Angevin dynasty. Built in the Gothic style, the cathedral incorporated earlier Christian structures, such as the basilica of Santa Restituta and the Basilica della Stefania, dating back to the 4th century. Over the centuries, it underwent extensive renovations and reconstructions, particularly after significant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that shaped its current form.

Features of the Cathedral

The cathedral’s facade, redesigned in the 19th century by architect Enrico Alvino in neo-Gothic style, retains medieval elements. These include the central portal adorned with intricate sculptures and the iconic Madonna with Child by Tino di Camaino. Inside, visitors are greeted by a grand interior featuring a Latin cross plan with three aisles, supported by sixteen pillars embellished with ancient columns of Eastern and African granite.

What to See Inside

The Interior

The central nave, stretching approximately 100 meters in length and reaching a height of 48 meters, showcases a blend of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic. The ceiling, adorned with 18th-century coffered panels commissioned by Cardinal Decio Carafa, adds to the cathedral’s grandeur.
