The Underwater Archaeological Park of Baia, located off the coast of Bacoli, Italy, offers a unique opportunity to explore the submerged remnants of an ancient Roman city. This site was engulfed by the sea due to the phenomenon of bradyseism and now preserves the remains of Roman villas, mosaics, and thermal baths that once belonged to the Roman aristocracy. Here is a guide to help you make the most of your visit to this extraordinary underwater park.

Things to See

Villa with the Entrance to the Porch

One of the highlights of the park is the villa with the entrance to the porch, which is a favorite among divers and snorkelers. This villa provides a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of ancient Roman elites, with its intricate mosaics and elaborate architectural design.

Nymphaeum

Situated at a depth of 7 meters, the Nymphaeum is another notable site. This large rectangular room with an apse once housed marble statues depicting scenes from Greek mythology. These statues have been relocated to the Baia Castle, where they are part of a life-size reconstruction of the original Nymphaeum.

Villa dei Pisoni

The Villa dei Pisoni is an extensive complex that features a large garden, residential rooms, and thermal baths. It is named after the Pisoni family, notable Roman aristocrats. Visitors can explore the remains of the villa’s sophisticated water systems and luxurious living spaces.

Secca Fumosa

Located in Zone C of the park, the Secca Fumosa is characterized by massive submarine emissions of gas and hot water. This unique environment supports a variety of marine life, including sulphobacteria, which are part of a distinctive food chain.
