Highlights
The Orto Botanico dell’Università di Siena is not just a collection of plants, but a living museum of various ecosystems and flora from around the world.
- Exotic and Local Plants
The garden displays a wide variety of plants, from those from Tuscany to those from exotic regions around the world. The central collection is meticulously arranged, with plants organized by species and origin. Don’t miss the Tropical Greenhouse with its fascinating tropical species and the succulent collection in the Tepidarium, which showcases unique desert plants. - Historic Greenhouses
One of the highlights of this garden is the historic greenhouses, which date back to the late 1800s. These greenhouses are home to everything from insectivorous plants to rare citrus species. The air-conditioned antique cellar, which recreates a tropical rainforest, is particularly impressive. - Tuscan Flora
Visitors will also enjoy a section devoted to the flora of Tuscany. You can observe native plants in their natural habitat in the recreated mountain, hilly, and coastal areas of Tuscany. The rock gardens are particularly popular for their unique landscapes, showcasing different soil types and the plants that grow in each. - Peaceful Walks and Views
The park offers many shaded areas with benches where visitors can sit, relax, and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the backdrop of the Tuscan hills is breathtaking. The quiet and contemplative atmosphere has been well received by many visitors, who find it an ideal place to read, paint, or simply relax.
Points of Interest Not to Miss
There are several points of interest that should not be missed during your visit:
- The Greenhouses:
Here you will find some of the most unusual and exotic plants in the garden, including insectivorous plants, succulents, and tropical species. - Medieval Fountain:
This ancient fountain in the lower part of the garden is a relic of Siena’s unique hydraulic system and offers a glimpse into the city’s medieval past. - Dinosaur Trail:
For those with children, the Dinosaur Trail is a great place to visit. Replicas of prehistoric creatures are displayed amidst the greenery, making it a fun place to learn.

Advice for Tourists
- Comfortable Shoes:
The garden is located on a steep hillside, so be prepared to walk uphill. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. - Bring Insect Repellent:
Like many green spaces, the gardens can attract mosquitoes. Bringing your own insect repellent will make your visit more pleasant. - Visit in Spring or Early Summer:
The gardens are beautiful all year round, but you will enjoy the splendor of the flowers and plants more if you visit during the blooming season. - Stay Hydrated:
Steep hills and open spaces make it easy to become dehydrated, especially in the warmer months. Be sure to bring water.
