Located in the heart of Avignon, France, the Papal Palace (Palais des Papes) is the largest Gothic palace in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This monumental fortress once served as the residence of the Pope in the 14th century and boasts an enchanting blend of history, architecture, and stunning views of the surrounding Provence region. Whether you are a history buff or a casual traveler, here is everything you need to know to make the most of your visit to this iconic landmark.

Highlights of the Papal Palace

The Great Chapel
Located above the audience hall, the Great Chapel is a masterpiece of medieval technology. The impressive vaulted ceiling, with no central support, is an architectural marvel. Once the setting for elaborate ceremonies and religious events, it offers a glimpse of the religious and cultural heritage of the time.

The Audience Hall
One of the largest halls in the palace, the Audience Hall was used for banquets, receptions, and even inquisitions. This magnificent space could accommodate up to 600 people. The soaring columns and vaulted ceilings speak of the majesty that the popes once enjoyed here.

Private Apartments and Frescoes
The Pope’s private apartments feature beautiful frescoes by the Italian painter Matteo Giovanetti. Although the original furnishings have been lost, the artistry of the frescoes remains, depicting a variety of religious and secular scenes. A virtual tablet called “HistoPad” allows visitors to see the palace in its heyday in augmented reality.

Courtyard (Cour d’Honneur)
The vast Cour d’Honneur is surrounded by towering walls that reach 100 feet high. Once a grand gathering place, it is now a popular spot for tourists to pause, take pictures, and enjoy the historical atmosphere.

Panoramic View from the Rooftop
One of the best treats for visitors is the breathtaking panoramic view from the roof of the palace. Climbing the steep stairs, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view of Avignon, the Rhone River, and the countryside in the distance.

Other Sights Around the Palace

Saint-Bénézet Bridge (Bridge of Avignon)
A short walk from the palace, the iconic Pont St. Benezet (Bridge of Avignon) is partially destroyed but still open to visitors. Stroll along the remaining arches and enjoy views of the river and the medieval walls of Avignon.

Rocher des Doms
Located just north of the palace, the Rocher des Doms is a charming hilltop park with shaded paths, ponds, and flower beds. It offers a panoramic view of the Rhone River and regional vineyards—a peaceful respite from the palace tour.

Petit Palais
Once the home of the local bishop, the Petit Palais now serves as a museum with works from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, including paintings by famous artists such as Botticelli. It’s a great spot for art lovers who want to enhance their historical experience.
