My name is Jena Hovor. I found myself in France in 2010 after graduating from journalism school, when I decided to take a short break before starting my career. What was supposed to be a three-month trip turned into my destiny and a lifelong passion. France captivated me with its incredible diversity: from the lavender fields of Provence to the majestic cliffs of Étretat, from the snow-capped peaks of the Alps to the sandy beaches of the French Riviera. Each region revealed a new facet of the French soul – the gastronomic abundance of Burgundy, the architectural heritage of Alsace, the wild beauty of Corsica, and the mysterious Brittany with its Celtic roots. Over 14 years, I've cycled more than 15,000 kilometers on French roads, explored all 13 metropolitan regions and overseas territories. I've created over 170 original routes, many of which pass through authentic villages and secret places known only to locals. I speak French, English, and Russian fluently, and have mastered the Provençal dialect. I still discover new corners of this amazing country every day. I am convinced that the real France lives not only in Paris and famous tourist spots, but also in small family wineries, local farmers' markets, and ancient castles hidden among vineyards.

Pont d’Avignon, also known as Saint-Bénézet Bridge, is one of the main tourist attractions in the historic city of Avignon, located in the Provence region of southern France. Spanning the Rhone River, the bridge is both a symbol of the city and a testament to its rich history. A visit to Pont d’Avignon is a must for anyone traveling to this beautiful region of France.

Pont d’Avignon’s Main Attractions

Although the Pont d’Avignon bridge is no longer a fully functioning bridge across the Rhone River, it remains an iconic structure. Here are some of the highlights to look out for when visiting:

  • Surviving Arches: Only four of the original 22 arches remain, but they are enough to appreciate the scale and historical importance of the bridge.
  • Chapel of Saint Nicolas: Built on the second pier of the bridge, this chapel is both a historic structure and a quiet place to reflect on the bridge’s past. It once housed the relics of St. Benezet.
  • Views: The remaining arches offer a wonderful view of Avignon, the Rhone River, and the surrounding landscape. It is a great spot for taking pictures and enjoying the atmosphere of the city.
  • Famous Song: The famous French nursery rhyme “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” about this bridge, is known to many people around the world. The song originated from a social gathering where people danced in the fields under the bridge.

  • Best Time to Visit: The bridge can be visited all year round, but it is best to visit in spring or summer, when the weather is pleasant and the surrounding gardens are in full bloom.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: The bridge is made of cobblestones, so wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to explore the remaining arches.
  • Use the Audio Guide: To learn more about the history of the bridge, use the free audio guide available at the entrance. It provides insightful commentary on the history, legends, and facts about the bridge.
  • Combine with a Visit to the Palais des Papes: Many people combine a visit to the Pont d’Avignon with a tour of the Palais des Papes, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Avignon. Joint tickets are also available for discounted admission to both attractions.
  • Windy Conditions: Bridges can be windy, especially at higher elevations. It is advisable to take off your hat or scarf before going up to the bridge to avoid dropping them.
