Expert Tips

Choose the season based on your travel style – in summer, Austria offers more lakes, hiking trails, and scenic Alpine roads like the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. In winter, many mountain roads are closed, but Christmas markets and ski resorts are in full swing.

Book mountain lifts in advance – during peak times (July and Christmas holidays), tickets for lifts like Schafbergbahn, Kitzsteinhorn, or Nordkette must be booked online. On-site ticket offices close early or sell out quickly.

Always check parking near lakes and villages – parking in Austria is rarely free (Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee, Seeboden). In some areas you can only park for 2–3 hours, otherwise an automatic fine is issued.

Austria wakes up early – shops, bakeries, and mountain lifts open as early as 7–8 AM and close by 5–6 PM. After 7 PM most places are closed, except restaurants in tourist areas.

For lake swimming, look for “Seebad” signs – these are official, equipped swimming areas (Attersee, Weissensee, Wörthersee). Wild swimming is not always allowed, especially in lakes used for drinking water.
