Switzerland is a place where alpine valleys open into turquoise lakes, and almost every turn of the road reveals a postcard view. In just 5 days you can feel the atmosphere of its cities, walk through cinematic landscapes, and show children the kind of nature they usually see only in films. This itinerary is designed for families who want mountains, open spaces, water, fun activities and beautiful viewpoints in every day of the trip.

Why is a car essential for a 5-day Switzerland itinerary?

Across the trip materials, Switzerland clearly works best as a self-drive destination. Mountain passes, small villages, scenic parking spots and remote lakes were all reached comfortably by car, with flexible stops for photos and short walks. For families, this means easier logistics, smoother transitions between activities and much less stress with luggage and tired children.

A motorway vignette is required, and travellers in the files bought it directly at the border before entering the country. Near popular natural attractions, parking is usually well organised. For example, next to the cable car for Oeschinensee (Oeschinen Lake) in Kandersteg there is a convenient parking area that costs 8 CHF per day. In some destinations, such as Zermatt, private cars are restricted and this has to be considered when planning, especially in high season.

Tip from the Itinerary Expert: I always aim to reach major cable-car stations before 10:00. Queues and parking issues typically start in late morning, while early arrivals enjoy calmer walks and softer light for family photos.

When is the best moment to follow a 5-day Switzerland itinerary?

The attached materials show how strongly the experience changes with the season.

Summer (June-September)
These are the clearest days, with warmest water and fully open hiking paths. Oeschinensee is repeatedly described as astonishingly turquoise and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, with boat rentals, restaurants and panoramic routes operating throughout the day.

Autumn (September-October)
Trails are quieter, the light is softer and valleys become colourful. Some high-altitude paths may close earlier in the season, but areas like Rosenlaui Valley remain impressive with misty, warm-toned scenery.

Spring (April-May)
This is peak waterfall time. In Lauterbrunnen Valley, the cliffs and Staubbachfall look especially powerful during snowmelt, according to the impressions summarised in the files.

Winter (December-March)
Winter works best for mountain villages such as Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and Zermatt. The materials also mention that Oeschinensee can freeze into a natural skating area, although access and safety depend heavily on conditions.

Switzerland

Which cities enhance a 5-day Switzerland itinerary?

Zurich (Zürich)

Zurich appears in the files as a clean, atmospheric gateway city with calm lakefront walks and a picturesque Old Town. Its waterfront, chocolate shops and relaxed morning streets make it an ideal soft landing before heading into the Alps.

Lucerne (Luzern)

Lucerne is described as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities, with a harmonious mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Key highlights include Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Lion Monument, both of which leave a strong emotional impression and often make travellers wish they had scheduled more time here.

Interlaken

Interlaken is presented as a hub for adventure: paragliding, lakes, hiking, rafting and easy access to the Jungfrau region. Its location between two lakes makes it an excellent base for day trips into surrounding valleys and mountains.

Lauterbrunnen

The files refer to Lauterbrunnen Valley as one of the most beautiful in Europe, with 72 waterfalls, steep cliffs and routes leading towards Mürren and Wengen. Staubbachfall is mentioned several times as an essential landmark that defines the dramatic scale of the valley.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald is portrayed as a family-friendly mountain village with stunning views towards the Eiger. It offers easy hikes, panoramic terraces and a sense of wide-open alpine freedom that works very well for children and photo-focused travellers.

I often choose Interlaken or Grindelwald as a base for two consecutive nights. This reduces constant packing and unpacking and leaves more daylight for actual experiences with the kids.

5-Day Switzerland Itinerary (Family-Friendly)

DAY 1 – Zurich → Lucerne

In the morning (10:00-13:00), start in Zurich (Zürich): walk along the lakefront promenade and explore the Old Town – the distance between them is only about 10 minutes on foot, making it an easy warm-up day for children and allowing plenty of photo stops along the way. Have lunch at Zeughauskeller, which serves traditional Swiss dishes and offers outdoor seating when the weather is good. In the afternoon (13:00-15:00), drive from Zurich to Lucerne (about 50 minutes), park at Kesselturm or Löwen Center, and visit Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Lion Monument – these are essential sights clearly shown in the source materials; plan around 1.5 hours for walking, photos, and moving between locations. In the evening (15:00-18:00), stroll along Lake Lucerne to enjoy sunset views and end your first day in a relaxed atmosphere. Have dinner at Wirtshaus Taube, which serves traditional Swiss comfort food and is suitable for families. I usually start the lake walk from the bridge – this direction tends to give the most beautiful reflections on the water for photos.

DAY 2 – Lucerne → Interlaken → Lauterbrunnen

In the morning (10:00-13:00), start in Zurich (Zürich): walk along the lakefront promenade and explore the Old Town – the distance between them is only about 10 minutes on foot, making it an easy warm-up day for children and allowing plenty of photo stops along the way. Switzerland

A walk through this valley feels like stepping into a fairy-tale. Switzerland, you never stop surprising me.

DAY 3 – Grindelwald → Rosenlaui Valley

In the morning (10:00-13:00), drive from Grindelwald to Rosenlaui Valley (around 40 minutes); the files describe it as a magical river-and-meadow landscape with cows and wide open panoramas. Spend 2-2.5 hours walking the relatively flat valley paths, which work very well for children after more intense days, and have lunch at the Hotel Rosenlaui Restaurant, which serves simple alpine dishes. In the afternoon (13:00-16:30), return to Grindelwald (40 minutes) and take an easy village walk toward viewpoints of the Eiger or simply explore the streets and small terraces, as the materials highlight Grindelwald as ideal for relaxed, scenic landscapes rather than only challenging hikes. In the evening (16:30-18:00), have dinner at C und M Café Bar Restaurant. Parking at Grindelwald Terminal before 17:00 generally makes access easier and helps avoid congestion on the narrow village road.

DAY 4 – Full Day at Oeschinensee (Kandersteg)

In the morning (10:00-12:00), drive from Grindelwald to Kandersteg (about 1 hour 15 minutes), park at the Oeschinensee cable-car station where the materials note an 8 CHF daily fee, take the cable car up (around 30 CHF return) and walk roughly 20 minutes to reach the lake. Lunch can be enjoyed at one of the lakeside restaurants, where meals are mentioned as costing around 40 EUR per person, or you can bring a picnic, which is often recommended because prices are higher and card acceptance may be limited. In the afternoon (12:00-16:30), family-friendly options include renting rowboats on the lake (about 35-37 CHF per hour), following the easy lakeside trail (around 1.5 hours) suitable for most ages, or, for more energetic families, walking a short section of Panorama Trail 8 by going 20-30 minutes uphill for superior views before returning the same way. In the evening (16:30-18:00), return to the upper station, take the cable car down-aiming for one of the last rides around 18:00-and then drive back to Interlaken (approximately 1 hour 10 minutes) for the night. Tip from the Itinerary Expert: when I followed this route, taking the first cable car at 10:00 made the entire visit calmer, and the files consistently mention that crowds and queues increase significantly after 11:00.

Switzerland

DAY 5 – Interlaken → Rhine Falls → Zurich

In the morning (10:00-12:00), drive from Interlaken to the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) in about 1 hour 50 minutes and spend roughly an hour exploring the viewpoints, as the files describe the falls as Europe’s most powerful plain waterfall and especially dramatic in summer, then have lunch at Schloss Laufen Restaurant located right beside the falls. In the afternoon (12:00-14:00), you may take a short 15-20-minute boat ride near the central rock before driving back to Zurich, which takes around 50 minutes. In the evening (14:00-18:00), enjoy free time around Bahnhofstrasse for light shopping and another relaxing lakeside walk, followed by dinner at Haus Hiltl, which offers vegetarian dishes and suits families looking for a quick, well-organised meal. For practical access, parking at Urania or Jelmoli Parking places you within comfortable walking distance of both the main shopping street and the lakefront.

Traveler reviews

Emily Gardner – July 2021
Our Switzerland route felt like a dream, especially the day at Oeschinensee. The turquoise water looked unreal, and the short walk from the lift was easy for the kids. The only downside was the crowd after noon. We rented a rowboat for an hour, and it became the highlight of the whole trip.

Daniel Weiss – September 2018
With three kids, we were worried about long hikes, but Rosenlaui Valley was perfect – gentle paths, cows in the fields and unbelievable scenery. It felt peaceful in a way we didn’t expect. The peak was hidden behind clouds, but that honestly made the whole place feel even more magical.

Sarah Kaplan – August 2024
Driving through Switzerland made the whole trip easier. Lauterbrunnen was my favourite stop – waterfalls everywhere and soft afternoon light that made every photo look cinematic. Staubbachfall was stunning up close. Parking was simple, but we learned to arrive early; by 14:00 it gets busy.

Michael Turner – May 2022
Oeschinensee absolutely impressed us. The hike up was tough in places, but once we reached the top, the panorama was worth every step. We later took the cable car down because the kids were tired. Food at the lake restaurant was expensive, so next time we’re definitely packing lunch.

Tips from the Itinerary Expert

  • Arrive early to Oeschinensee for crowd-free views
From my own experience and from the materials, the cable-car line at Oeschinensee grows quickly after 11:00. Arriving for the first ride lets families enjoy the lake in relative calm and take photos before the midday rush.
  • Bring a picnic to the lake – it saves money and stress
Restaurants around Oeschinensee are beautiful but pricey, with meals noted at around 40 EUR per person, and card acceptance is not always guaranteed. A picnic gives more freedom: you can eat at the best viewpoint instead of queuing for a table.
  • Use Rosenlaui Valley as a “recovery day” between harder hikes
After steeper trails, Rosenlaui’s flat, open meadows feel like a welcome break. The valley is gentle, peaceful and ideal for children who need an easier day while parents still enjoy dramatic mountain scenery.
  • Plan Lauterbrunnen for late afternoon light
The cliffs and waterfalls – especially Staubbachfall – look much more impressive after about 15:00, when the sun hits the rock face. This is the best moment for photography and for clearly seeing the shape of the waterfall.
Switzerland

Lucerne looks like a postcard you never want to leave. The Chapel Bridge is even more magical in real life.

Insights from the Itinerary Expert

I travelled along this Switzerland route in June 2023, and even after years of designing family itineraries, few regions have impressed me as consistently as this one. What struck me most was how naturally each day flowed into the next: calm lakefronts in Zurich, the gentle charm of Lucerne, the dramatic cliffs of Lauterbrunnen, the open panoramas of Grindelwald, and finally the theatrical beauty of Oeschinensee (Oeschinen Lake). The scenery changes quickly, yet the drives between stops stay short enough for children.

One thing I regularly remind families is that Switzerland rewards early starts. At Oeschinensee, for example, arriving before 10:00 means walking beside turquoise water in near silence – a completely different experience from midday. Rosenlaui Valley surprised me with how grounding and quiet it felt, especially after more energetic days. The light in Lauterbrunnen after 15:00 is something I still remember clearly.

There are small challenges along this route: restaurants near mountain lakes can be expensive, weather moves fast in the Alps, and popular cable cars fill up quickly. With a few simple adjustments – a packed lunch, flexible timing and a carefully chosen order of stops – the itinerary becomes very smooth for families.

This 5-day route covers some of the most atmospheric places in Switzerland, balancing nature, comfort and practical logistics. If you wish, the Itinerary Expert will be happy to help you build a personalised route through this region – and through Switzerland as a whole.

Popular questions

Is it better to rent a car for this Switzerland route?
Yes. The materials show that a car gives much more flexibility for reaching nature spots, stopping at viewpoints and handling short transfers between places like Kandersteg, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. It is the most practical option for families.

What time is best to visit Oeschinensee with children?
When I visited, arriving before 10:00 made a huge difference. Cable-car queues were short, the lakeshore was quiet and the walk felt very relaxed. It was the best window for families who want calmer paths and good photos.

Are mountain lakes and valleys suitable for younger kids?
Yes. The files show that Rosenlaui Valley has flat, accessible paths, and Oeschinensee offers short, manageable walks from the cable car. More demanding trails are optional, so you can easily adapt the day to your children’s energy.

How expensive is food around major nature sites?
At Oeschinensee, meals are around 40 EUR per person. I prefer bringing a picnic – not because the restaurants are poor, but because eating outdoors gives more freedom with timing and usually works better for the family budget.

When is the most scenic time to see Lauterbrunnen Valley?
The materials highlight late afternoon (after about 15:00) as the most scenic time. Staubbachfall and the surrounding cliffs are better lit, and the shape of the waterfall is more visible. Tip from the Itinerary Expert: I always plan Lauterbrunnen for that time of day.
