Expert Tips

Neta Gimpel

Understand ZTL zones before your trip – this is the main source of fines.  In historic city centers (Florence, Pisa, Rome, Bologna, etc.), there are restricted ZTL areas where private cars are not allowed. Cameras automatically record every vehicle that enters. Many travelers receive 5–10 fines in a single day just for making extra turns while looking for parking. It’s better to leave the car at a parking facility near the train station or on the outskirts and continue on foot or by public transport.

Parking in Italy is a system – not chaos: understand line colors and signs.  White lines usually mean free parking, blue lines are paid (via meter), and yellow lines are for residents or service vehicles. The sign “zona rimozione” means towing zone – not just a fine. Wrong parking can easily cost several hundred euros, plus towing.

Popular places must be booked well in advance – otherwise it’s expensive or simply unavailable. The Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Uffizi Gallery, Milan Cathedral rooftop, several Cinque Terre trails, and some cable cars in the Dolomites require online booking in advance. Buying tickets on the spot often means long queues or no available slots for the same day.

Avoid eating right next to major attractions – it’s expensive and rarely authentic.  Restaurants within 100–200 meters of iconic sights (Piazza Navona, Duomo, San Marco, etc.) mainly serve tourist crowds. It’s better to walk a few streets deeper into the local area, look for places without “tourist menu,” and choose traditional trattorias instead of paying for a view.

Plan trips to nature and mountains based on weather, not just dates on the calendar. In the Dolomites and the Alps, hiking trails and cable cars open and close based on weather, snow levels, and landslide risk – not by fixed calendar dates. Before traveling, always check the official lift websites, webcams, and local trail status – not just general travel blogs.
