Expert Tips
Plan mountain lift trips based on the weather, not the calendar. Many travelers book tickets too early for Titlis, Gornergrat, or Jungfraujoch – and then discover that lifts operate only when visibility is good. It’s better to buy tickets 1–2 days before your visit, after checking webcams and weather forecasts.
Trains are great in Switzerland, but not everywhere. Switzerland is famous for its trains, but some beautiful places like Oeschinensee, Caumasee, Appenzell, or Lauterbrunnen Valley are easier to reach by car or bus – because there is simply no railway access.
Parking near lakes and mountain villages is almost always paid and time-limited. In Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, and Zermatt, parking is usually allowed for only 2–4 hours, with no option to extend. Parking on road shoulders is prohibited – fines are issued automatically by camera even without an inspector.
There are no cafés, shops, or water on hiking trails – you must carry everything with you. A common mistake: travelers start the Five Lakes Walk (Zermatt) or Ebenalp hike assuming they’ll find food on the way. In the mountains, there are almost no shops, toilets, or drinking water – except for occasional natural springs.
Many alpine roads are closed from October to May. Roads like Grimselpass, Furkapass, Sustenpass, and Oberalppass are often closed due to snow, even when Google Maps shows them as open. Travelers in May often get stuck or have to turn back.
