My love for Japan began the moment I arrived in Tokyo. The country amazed me with its harmony of ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, breathtaking nature, and a culture unlike any other. Since then, Japan has become a part of my life, and I return there again and again. Today I help travelers discover the real Japan: I create personalized itineraries, give lectures, and prepare guests for their unforgettable journey. I would be delighted to open Japan for you too!

Naoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea is a one-of-a-kind Japanese destination for art lovers. The island’s seamless blend of contemporary art and serene natural scenery offers an extraordinary cultural escape.

Naoshima’s attractions are spread over three areas:

  1. Miyaura Port – The bustling gateway to the island.
  2. Honmura Village – A traditional area filled with local charm and art projects.
  3. Art Museum District – A hub for world-class museums and outdoor installations.

Together, these three areas offer an immersive experience that blends creativity and serenity.

Naoshima

Major Art Museums and Galleries

Naoshima’s art museums are the center of its artistic appeal. Each space offers a unique perspective on art and architecture and is thoughtfully curated:

  • Chichu Art Museum
An architectural masterpiece designed by Tadao Ando. Built largely underground to protect the natural landscape, the museum features works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria. Advance reservations are required due to limited admission quotas.
  • Benesse House Museum
This combined art museum and hotel offers an immersive experience in art. The collection ranges from contemporary installations to site-specific works, and visitors can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea.
  • Lee Ufan Museum
This museum is a collaboration between artists Lee Ufan and Tadao Ando. The interplay of light, space, and texture provides visitors with a meditative experience.
  • Tadao Ando Museum
Dedicated to the architectural legacy of Tadao Ando, this museum offers visitors an insight into his design philosophy through exhibits and models. Despite its modest scale, it has had a tremendous impact.

Open-Air Art Installations

The island’s open-air art installations are equally fascinating:

  • Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkins
The iconic “yellow pumpkin” along the shore and the “red pumpkin” at Miyaura Port are must-see landmarks.
  • I♥ Yu (I Love Yu)
A creative public bathhouse art installation where functionality meets artistry.
  • Valley Gallery
Home to Yayoi Kusama’s “Daffodil Garden” and Tsuyoshi Ozawa’s “Slug Buddha 88.” This outdoor gallery captivates visitors with its dynamic environment and reflective sculptures.

Naoshima

Art House Project

In Honmura, a vacant house has been transformed into an art space. Notable examples include:

  • Minamidera Temple
An interactive light installation by James Turrell.
  • Goho Shrine
A fusion of traditional shrine architecture and modern design by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Due to limited space and designed to be an intimate experience, reservations are recommended for some of the houses.

Getting to Naoshima

Getting to Naoshima is part of the adventure. There are two main routes:

  2. Via Uno Port (Okayama): Take a local train from Okayama to Uno Station, then a 20-minute ferry ride to Naoshima.

Ferry timetables vary, so it is advisable to plan in advance and check seasonal changes. Ferries are available in two types, standard and high-speed, for a balance of comfort and speed.
