Nestled high in the cliffs of Monte Baldo, the Santuario Madonna della Corona offers breathtaking views and a profound sense of spirituality. This guide provides essential tips, must-see attractions, and useful information for planning a visit to this awe-inspiring sanctuary.

History and Significance

The Santuario Madonna della Corona has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries, with its origins dating back to the early medieval period. Significant enhancements began in the 15th century, and the sanctuary has undergone various transformations since then. Expansions in the 17th and 19th centuries and a major reconstruction in the 1970s have shaped the sanctuary into what it is today. In 1982, the sanctuary was granted the title of “basilica minor,” and it was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1988.

What to See

  • The Church: The church is the heart of the sanctuary and showcases a beautiful blend of Gothic and modern architectural elements. Noteworthy features include the facade, completed in the late 19th century, and the interior artworks, which include numerous sculptures by Ugo Zannoni.
  • The Statues and Sculptures: The sanctuary is adorned with many significant statues, such as those of St. John Evangelist, St. Mary Magdalene, and Our Lady of Sorrows. Also worth mentioning are the bronze works by Raffaele Bonente, including the altar piece and the Via Crucis stations.
  • The Ex-voto Collection: Along the right wall of the church, visitors can view 167 ex-voto tablets, some of which date back to 1547. These offerings represent the gratitude of pilgrims for miracles and blessings received.

Don’t Miss

  • The Chapel of Confessions: This serene spot, featuring more works by Zannoni, is perfect for prayer and reflection.
  • The Scenic Views: The sanctuary’s location on the cliffside provides breathtaking views of the Adige Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Planning Your Visit

Best Time to Visit: Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to visit, as the weather is mild and there are fewer crowds. Summer can be very busy, and winter may present challenges due to weather conditions.

Duration: Plan to spend at least half a day exploring the sanctuary and its surroundings thoroughly. The walk from Spiazzi to the sanctuary and back can take up to an hour, not including the time spent inside the church.

Accessibility: The path to the sanctuary involves many steps and can be physically demanding. There are no elevators, so it may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
