Italy Travel Guide: 7-Day Florence-Rome Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Florence
Dedicate your first day to traveling from Rome to Florence. It’s recommended to travel by car, though this mode of transportation has its particularities that deserve separate discussion.
Enter Florence through Michelangelo Square. As soon as you enter the city and see the dome of the Duomo, you can say nothing but WOW!
Park your car at Michelangelo Square. Parking and driving in Florence also merit another story for another time. Get to your hotel by taxi. When riding down to the old city, you’ll immediately get the feeling that Florence is a unique city and your visit is going to be special.
Devote your first day in Florence to checking into your hotel, shopping, and taking a night walk around the city.

Call your second day of the trip the “flavor of Tuscany.”
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful and exciting corners in Italy. You can safely devote a few weeks to traveling around Tuscany and be sure that every day you will discover new and wonderful corners of the region.
Tuscany encompasses Siena and Pisa, sea and unforgettable hills, Florence and the spirit of Renaissance. If your trip focuses on Florence and Rome, make sure to spend at least one day exploring Tuscany.
Rent a car just for that day. By the way, you could manage without it as Tuscany has a well-run public transportation system. Besides, you’ll see ZTL signs in every city of Italy.
Spend your second day in Pisa, San Gimignano, and Siena. Of course, give each of the cities just a quick once-over and take a few road trips through Tuscany. This will be enough to feel the flavor of Tuscany.

Devote your third day of the tour in Italy to seeing Florence. Leave your hotel quite early in the morning in order to manage to see as much as possible. You’ll obviously fail to see everything in the day and a half devoted to the city because Florence is an ever-living source of wonderful discoveries.
Start your day at Palazzo Pitti, where you should visit both the museum and the Boboli Gardens. After a walk along the neighboring narrow streets, continue your excursion to the Duomo and then make your way to Dante’s House.
Dante’s House is a small ancient building located not far from the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. There’s also an old church nearby in which, according to legend, Dante first caught sight of Beatrice, whom he chose as his muse for his “Divine Comedy.” It’s not known for sure if they are the very same building and church, but they really look rather old.
After taking a short walk from Dante’s House to Piazza della Signoria, you’ll likely be caught there for two reasons. First, you’ll be impressed by numerous pieces of art, and second, you might be caught in the rain. Luckily, you can shelter from heavy rain under the roof of Loggia del Lanzi.
Toward evening, visit the Basilica of Santa Croce. This day in Florence will be extremely intensive but wonderful and unforgettable despite everything, including heavy rain.
End your day with a walk across the Bridge of Santa Trinita and past Palazzo Strozzi to Piazza della Repubblica. In Piazza della Repubblica, have a wonderful supper at Giubbe Rosse. Though the restaurant is aimed mostly at tourists, it offers nice food and an impressive view of the square.
Remember the wonderful atmosphere of the evening. Musicians playing and filling the square with music, the scent of rain in the air – all this makes the supper very exciting. The fantastically delicious dessert will be especially memorable.
Follow supper with a wonderful performance of street theatre and street clowns. It’s really a fantastic and unforgettable day.

Day 4: Moving to Rome and First Impressions
Start your fourth day in Italy with moving from Florence to Rome. Check into your hotel by 12:00 PM and set off for your first trip around Rome at about 1:00 PM.
Choose a hotel located near the Colosseum. Due to this location, you’ll feel all the power of Rome from the first moment. Let your first trip pass by the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Altar of the Fatherland. From the very first moment, you’ll find yourself in the midst of ancient Rome’s history.
Begin your first day by visiting Tiberina Island. Right near the island, not far from the bank of the River Tiber, you can see the Theatre of Marcellus and two surviving churches. After visiting the remains of ancient Rome, pass through the Roman Ghetto and the Great Synagogue of Rome.
Not far from the Roman Ghetto, you can see a small but special fountain called “The Turtle Fountain” (Fontana delle Tartarughe). After the fountain, pass through the narrow streets full of stores to Campo de Fiori Square, noted for its statue of Giordano Bruno.
Not far from Campo de Fiori, there’s another square called Piazza Farnese. It’s rather big but cozy with a “home-like” atmosphere. After a short rest in the square, make your way to Torre Argentina Square and then to the Il Gesù Church, where your first day in Rome should end.
In the evening, after a short rest at the hotel, go enjoy the panorama of the Trevi Fountain under night illumination. It will be already 10:00 PM, but there will still be crowds of people near the fountain.
Day 5: Vatican City
Fully devote your second day in Rome to Vatican City. In the following articles, we’ll tell you about Vatican and the attractions you should visit there.
Here’s a short description of your day: Visit the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica and its dome, and St. Peter’s Square, from which you should go to the Castle of the Holy Angel. Pay special attention to the amazing bridge Ponte Sant’Angelo, through which you’ll pass to Navona Square.
Finish your day in Rome near the Colosseum and the Forum, trying to take photos of the night city.

Make your third day in Rome, or the sixth day in Italy, also “thematic.” One of the goals is to create routes that allow you to illustrate a particular theme without covering long distances.
Devote this day mostly to ancient Rome. Start your trip from Venice Square, continue through the “Altar of the Fatherland” to the Capitoline Hill. Devote a great part of your day to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Only late at night should you visit San Pietro in Vincoli church.
Day 7: Among Roman Pearls
Call your seventh and last day in Italy “among the Roman pearls.” It’s really a nice and fitting name. You’ll walk a lot that day, but every step will be worth it.
Start the day in Villa Borghese, regarded as one of the most popular and beautiful parks in Rome. Then walk down to Piazza del Popolo, in the corner of which you can see a small but rather interesting Museum of Leonardo da Vinci.
Through Via Babuino, reach the Spanish Steps, then move toward the Pantheon and finish the tour in the evening near the Trevi Fountain.
As you can see, this day will be full of exciting historical sites. End your day with a wonderful supper in Navona Square.
