Venice is a unique city without roads and cars in its historic center. However, the city has a land connection to the outside world via the 3.5 km Liberty Bridge (Ponte della Libertà) across the lagoon, which leads to areas where automobile transport remains accessible.

Piazzale Roma

• Location: Main tourist parking area, the only square in central Venice accessible by car
• Cost: €26 to €30 per 24 hours
• Largest garage: Autorimessa Comunale AVM with 2,182 parking spaces for cars and 180 for motorcycles on 6 levels
• Features:
  • High popularity among tourists
  • Difficulty finding free spaces, especially on weekends
  • Must leave keys on dashboard (this is normal and safe practice in Venice)
  • Direct connection to Venice center on foot or by vaporetto

Tronchetto Island (Piazzale Tronchetto)

• Location: Artificial island by the harbor with over 4,000 covered parking spaces
• Cost: €29 per 24 hours for covered parking (hourly rates: €6 for 1 hour, €12 for 2 hours, €18 for 3 hours)
• Features:
  • Always available spaces (no advance booking required)
  • No need to leave keys on dashboard
  • Suitable for buses, caravans, and large vehicles
  • Maximum height for vehicles: 2.10 m

Parking in Mestre

• Location: The most populated district of Venice municipality, located on the mainland
• Cost: Around €15 per 24 hours
• Features:
  • Economical option
  • Train journey to Venice takes 10 minutes and costs about €1.35
  • Bus routes 2, 4, 4L, and 6 reach Piazzale Roma in 20+ minutes
  • Free parking available in residential areas (e.g., Via Trieste, 29 – about 150 spaces)

Rental Car Return

• Practical approach: Plan your route so Venice is the second-to-last destination
• Advantages:
  • Ability to return the car at rental office in Piazzale Roma (e.g., Avis Car Rental)
  • Complete freedom to move around Venice without car concerns

Important Warnings

Speed Limit Compliance: When driving on Liberty Bridge, strictly observe the 70 km/h speed limit as there is an automatic violation detection system in operation.

Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL): Central Mestre has 4 limited traffic zones with 24-hour video surveillance

Mandatory Ticket Validation: Always validate your vaporetto ticket when boarding, or you may receive a fine

1. Advance Booking: Parking spaces in Venice are in high demand, so it’s recommended to reserve a space in advance
2. Location Choice: For short visits (up to 3 hours), Tronchetto with hourly payment is optimal
