Practical Tips for Visiting Christmas Markets
Best Time to Visit
To avoid large crowds, it’s advisable to visit the markets on weekdays in the morning (10:00 AM-2:00 PM). Weekends, especially during the evening hours from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, tend to be the busiest. The first days of December and the period from December 20 to January 6 are peak times.
Transportation and Logistics
Most markets are easily accessible by public transport. For convenient travel between locations, it’s advisable to purchase a 24-hour ATAC travel pass for €7. Buses 30, 46, 62, 64, 70, 82, 492, and 916 all stop at Piazza Navona. To reach EUR, take metro line B to the EUR Palasport station.
What to Buy at Christmas Markets
Traditional Roman souvenirs include Befana figurines, Christmas nativity scenes, replicas of ancient Roman coins, and unique soap shaped like Christmas figures. Handmade jewelry, knitted Christmas accessories, and ceramics crafted by local artisans are also popular.

Be sure to try traditional Italian Christmas sweets: panettone (sweet bread with candied fruits), pandoro (star-shaped cake dusted with powdered sugar), and torrone (nougat made with honey and almonds). Popular beverages include vin brulé (Italian mulled wine), hot chocolate, and roasted chestnuts.
Safety and Comfort
In crowded areas, be cautious of pickpockets, especially near major attractions. It’s best to carry important documents and valuables in a waist bag. December temperatures in Rome range from 8 to 15°C, so dress in layers and bring an umbrella.
Booking and Tickets
For paid events like Christmas World and Cinecittà World, it’s recommended to book tickets in advance through official websites, particularly for weekends. Discounts of up to 20% are available for early booking before October 2025.
Accommodation
To secure better prices and availability, it’s advisable to book hotels 3 to 6 months before your trip. Hotels near Piazza Navona and the Vatican are likely to be in high demand.
