Situated above the entrance to the Sarntal Valley, Castel Roncolo (Schloss Runkelstein) in Bolzano, Italy, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and art lovers. Renowned for its extensive collection of secular frescoes from the medieval period, this castle provides a unique glimpse into the lives and fashions of 14th-century nobility. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit to this historical gem.

Historical Overview

Built in 1237 by Friedrich and Beral von Wangen, Castel Roncolo has undergone several transformations throughout its history. In 1385, it was purchased by the Vintler brothers, who adorned it with stunning frescoes. These frescoes depict scenes from daily noble life, including jousts and literary themes such as Tristan and Isolde and King Arthur’s Round Table. Over the years, the castle has changed hands multiple times, suffered damage, and undergone significant restoration efforts, particularly in the 19th century.

What to See

  2. Summer House: Added in 1390 by the Vintlers, the Summer House contains frescoes illustrating stories from Arthurian legends and one of the earliest depictions of King Arthur’s Round Table.
  3. Western Palace: Inside the western palace, you can find fascinating scenes from the daily lives of nobles, including the chamber of bath and the hall of the joust.
  4. Views and Architecture: In addition to its artistic treasures, the castle offers spectacular views of Bolzano and the surrounding countryside. The medieval charm and well-preserved structures of the architecture are sights to behold.

What Not to Miss

  • The Bathroom Frescoes: One of the castle’s most fascinating features is the set of frescoes in the bathroom. These provide a unique glimpse into medieval hygiene and daily life.
  • The Courtyard: Even if you choose not to enter the museum, the central courtyard is free to visit and offers beautiful views and a historical ambiance.
  • Exhibitions: Don’t forget to explore the various exhibitions within the castle that delve into its history, the frescoes, and medieval life.

Tips for Tourists

  • Daily guided tours are available in German at 2:30 PM and in Italian at 3:30 PM. English tours can be arranged upon request for groups of at least ten people. Booking in advance is recommended due to limited availability.
  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for uphill walking. The path to the castle involves a 5-10 minute climb on rough cobblestones.
  • If you’re coming from Bolzano, the best path to take is the footpath on the opposite side of the Talvera River. This route is not only safer but also more scenic than the narrow road.
  • After exploring, you can have a meal or a refreshing drink at the castle’s tavern in the courtyard. The food there is surprisingly good, making it a perfect spot to relax.

How to Get There

  • On Foot or by Bike: To reach the castle, you can enjoy a scenic 30-minute walk or bike ride along the Talvera River promenade.
  • Public Transport: Weekdays: Take bus line 12 from Piazza Walther. Sundays/Holidays: Take bus line 150 from Piazza Domenicani, which stops at the San Genesio cable car station.
  • By Car: If you’re driving, head towards Sarntal Valley on SS 508 and turn right before the first tunnel. There’s a free, unattended parking lot at the bottom where you can park and then walk up to the castle. Just keep in mind that the final stretch involves a short climb.
