Thomas Bauer - In Search of the Real Germany My discovery of Germany happened thanks to an old Volkswagen that I bought for a ridiculous price in 2013. Being an engineer by education and an adventurer by spirit, I decided to test German reliability – I set off on a journey without a route or final destination. What was planned as a two-week vacation turned into a three-month expedition. I camped by Bavarian lakes, stopped in tiny Black Forest villages where they still make the famous cuckoo clocks, and tasted wines straight from the barrel in family wineries of the Rhine Valley. Upon returning home, I quit my job and moved to Germany. Today, I organize "non-tourist routes" for those who want to see the country through the eyes of a local. I know where they serve the best Eisbein in Berlin, which castles can be visited without crowds of tourists, and how to get to secret local festivals. By the way, I also happily develop classic routes to famous attractions – it all depends on your wishes. The main thing for me is that each client finds their own Germany!

Europa-Park, located in the charming town of Rust, Germany, is far more than just a theme park – it’s an experience that combines the best of Europe in one magical location. The park has won the title “World’s Best Theme Park” nine consecutive times, repeatedly proving why it’s considered the crown jewel of European entertainment industry.

The park spans an enormous area and is divided into 19 themed areas representing different European countries, featuring over 100 attractions for all ages. What makes Europa-Park truly special isn’t just its impressive size or cutting-edge attractions, but its exceptional attention to detail, high-quality service, and value-for-money ratio that’s hard to find in other theme parks worldwide.

The visit begins from the stunning entrance, through a magnificent main street surrounded by flags of all European nations and meticulously maintained seasonal flowers. The background music changes according to the area you’re in, creating a magical atmosphere that starts even before you board your first attraction.

The Spectacular Themed Areas – A Journey Between Cultures

Germany – The Impressive Gateway

The German area serves as the park’s main street, welcoming visitors with traditional German architecture reflecting the country’s 16 different states. The buildings here are constructed with great care, featuring hand-carved wooden details, colorful windows, and balconies decorated with flowers.

The centerpiece here is Voletarium – an advanced flying attraction that takes you on a breathtaking journey over European landscapes. The attraction combines cutting-edge technology with a full sensory experience, including scents and textures that complement the visual spectacle. The film showcases stunning views of Paris, Venice, German countryside, and more, with each moment accompanied by appropriate physical sensations.

Balthasar Castle, built in 1442, is a genuine historical site within the park housing a luxury restaurant. This is a rare opportunity to dine in an authentic medieval castle. The area also offers a wide variety of shops and restaurants located in traditional German-style buildings, including a traditional bakery serving fresh German bread in 15 different varieties.

The Panorama Train departs from here for a relaxing 20-minute journey around the park, with stops in England, Spain, and Russia. This is an excellent opportunity to understand the park’s layout and plan your route, especially on your first visit.

Europa Park in Germany

Italy – Romance and Mediterranean Charm

Europa-Park’s Italian area is filled with unique charm featuring an impressive Roman amphitheater, stone-paved streets, and seasonal decorations that change throughout the year. The romantic Italian atmosphere is present in every corner, from the sounds of classical Italian music to the scent of fresh basil and tomatoes from nearby restaurants.

One of the most popular attractions is Piccolo Mondo, a fascinating experience offering a gondola journey through a unique artistic world. The attraction features animals appearing in classical Italian artworks, offering many details to discover on each ride. Romantic Italian music accompanies the entire journey, and the attraction is suitable for the whole family, including children of all ages.

Geisterschloss is the park’s haunted house, an Italian and darker version of the classic Haunted Mansion. The attraction has been recently renovated but still maintains its original frightening atmosphere. The stretch room at the beginning, realistic physical effects (including special scents), and detailed animatronics create a truly scary experience. The attraction is more suitable for adults and children over 12, featuring scenes of haunted castle, magic kitchen, and other dark elements.

Additionally, the area includes the Europa-Park Theater with rotating shows throughout the year. Shows include professional magicians, acrobatics, and musical performances. The theater’s acoustics are excellent, and the seats are comfortable, making it the perfect place for a relaxing break during a busy day.

France – Elegance and Advanced Technology

The center of the French area is a giant sphere, reminiscent of Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, housing a popular attraction called Eurosat CanCan Coaster. This is an indoor roller coaster with a Parisian Moulin Rouge theme. The coaster underwent a complete renovation in 2018 and now features an advanced lighting system, wall projections, and quality surround sound. The journey begins with a slow climb through an indoor Eiffel Tower, continues with high-speed spins in complete darkness, accompanied by classical French music. The experience is smooth and rhythmic, suitable for the whole family.

Near the sphere is Madame Freudenreich Curiosités, a strange and charming attraction showcasing dinosaurs in everyday French scenes. The attraction replaced the old “Universe of Energy” and created a fantastic world where dinosaurs live in modern society. Despite the connection to France not being entirely clear, the attraction is full of humor, featuring a dinosaur cooking, another celebrating a birthday, and some making pizza. The attraction is suitable for families and offers a light break after more intense attractions.

Euro-Tower offers stunning panoramic views of the park and surroundings from a height of 75 meters. The ride up is slow and pleasant, and the view below reveals the park’s planning brilliance. Especially beautiful in the evening hours when the lights come on, allowing you to see all the different areas from above. The descent is faster and adds a bit of adrenaline to the non-threatening experience.

Switzerland – Mountains, Snow, and Alpine Atmosphere

Switzerland is designed as a traditional alpine village with charming wooden houses, hanging gladiolas, and classic mountain atmosphere. The scent of melted cheese mixes with clear mountain air, and during winter days, the area is covered with real snow.

The main attraction in the area is Matterhorn Blitz, a Wild Mouse-type roller coaster with a winding and unpredictable track that passes between buildings and offers stunning views of the park and nearby forest. The ride begins with a slow elevator climb and then suddenly descends at sharp angles with 90-degree turns. The speed isn’t particularly high, but the sharp and unexpected turns create strong sensations. The track passes close to trees and buildings, adding to the feeling of speed.

Swiss Bob Run is a unique experience of bobsled riding without tracks, simulating a real Swiss bobsled run. The cars roll within a metal tube through natural hills and valleys, without rails. This is one of the park’s oldest attractions (from the 1980s), but it still offers a unique experience you won’t find elsewhere. The ride is suitable for families and offers beautiful views of the Swiss area and nearby village.

The area specializes in authentic Swiss cuisine, with the Häkliberg Hut restaurant serving fresh melted cheese with potatoes for 18 euros per dish – a real Swiss culinary experience. The cheese is melted before your eyes and comes with cranberries, pickled onions, and guar biscuits. There are also excellent chocolate stands with a wide variety of quality Swiss sweets at better prices than regular stores.

Netherlands – Canals, Wind, and Pirates

The Dutch area is designed as a traditional Dutch town with real water canals, working windmills, and classic bridges. The bright colors of the houses, paved walkways, and seasonal flowers create an authentic Dutch atmosphere.

The main attraction here is Pirates in Batavia, one of the best attractions in the entire park and among all European theme parks. A 15-minute boat journey through the city of Batavia in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period, featuring spectacular scenes, advanced effects, authentic scents, and exceptional detail. The attraction was completely rebuilt after a fire in 2018 and now showcases world-class technical and artistic quality.

The journey begins at a quiet Dutch port, passes through smoky caves with pirate battles, continues to the lively city of Batavia full of life and activity, and includes scenes of local celebrations with spice and firework scents. The animatronics are extremely detailed, physical effects include water, wind, and heat, and surround sound creates a complete illusion. The attraction ends at the Bamboo Bay restaurant, offering a view of the attraction, similar to the Blue Bayou restaurant at Disneyland.

The area also includes additional family attractions like Coffee Cups – a Dutch version of classic teacups, and The Flying Dutchman – a flying attraction in Peter Pan style. Every weekend, cultural festivals of different European countries take place here, with local artists, special food, and street performances.

Iceland – Northern Mythology and Advanced Roller Coasters

The Icelandic area is a volcanic landscape with black rocks, artificial waterfalls, and glaciers, featuring a northern and magical atmosphere with epic music and scents of ocean and forest. During winter days, the area is covered with real snow, looking like part of real Iceland.

Blue Fire is an advanced roller coaster with magnetic launch reaching speeds of 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. It features four inversions: classic loop, heartline roll, horseshoe twist, and unique barrel roll. The journey begins in a dark laboratory with lighting effects and scientist animatronics, then launches suddenly and powerfully outside the building. This is one of the smoothest and most advanced roller coasters in the park, making it suitable even for those who don’t like extreme roller coasters due to the comfortable and smooth ride.

Wodan is a modern wooden roller coaster in Viking style with fire, water, and fog effects. The track includes high speeds up to 100 km/h, long airtime, and spectacular integration with Blue Fire – both coasters cross each other during the ride. The attraction includes dark tunnels with wall projections, steam effects simulating volcanic fog, and even heat and humidity effects. The first part simulates a maze of northern mythological monsters, and the second part at maximum speed through the forest.

Whale Adventures Northern Lights offers an interactive water battle with water cannons and whale-watching scenes. The attraction begins as a regular wildlife tour but gradually reveals mysterious creatures, requiring you to fight them with water cannons. The attraction is light and suitable for families but guarantees significant soaking on summer days.

Grimm’s Enchanted Forest is a magical area based on Brothers Grimm fairy tales, with interactive fairy tale circles and attractions for young children. Here you’ll find Dwarf City – a small train ride through the dwarf village with detailed animatronics.

Croatia – The Newest Area

Voltron is the park’s newest and most extreme attraction. An advanced roller coaster with seven inversions, the world’s steepest drop (87 degrees), and Europe’s longest multi-launch coaster track (1,385 meters). The attraction features four different launches at speeds up to 100 km/h and about 25 seconds of airtime during the ride. The track is divided into five different sections with breaks between them, making the experience intense and unforgettable.

The attraction is designed as a story of Nikola Tesla and securing future electricity. The queue includes an animatronic of Tesla himself greeting visitors, an interactive laboratory, and advanced electrical effects. This is the most extreme attraction not only in the park but in all of Europe, suitable only for advanced adrenaline enthusiasts. Wait times during peak season can reach two hours, so using the virtual queue is essential.

Additional Notable Areas

Minimoys Kingdom offers a unique indoor experience based on the French film “Arthur and the Minimoys.” Arthur is a family roller coaster with indoor and outdoor sections, starting as a dark ride with movie scenes, then becoming a real outdoor thrill ride. The design and detail here are at Disney park level, with giant vegetation creating a fairy world shrinking sensation.

The Spanish area offers an amphitheater with horse stunt shows and acrobatics, authentic tapas restaurants, and stunning Andalusian architecture. The Russian area includes EuroMir – a spinning roller coaster in a Soviet space station, and Snorri Touren – a winter dark ride with cute polar bears.

The Portuguese area is relatively small but contains Atlantica SuperSplash – the park’s wettest attraction, with a 30-meter drop at 80 km/h speed guaranteeing complete soaking.

Top Attractions – What You Must Experience

Leading Roller Coasters

Voltron tops the list as the most extreme roller coaster not only in the park but in all of Europe. The experience begins in the queue with Tesla’s interactive laboratory, continues with a roughly three-minute ride featuring four different launches and extensive airtime, and ends with complete adrenaline exhaustion. The attraction is open only from age 14 with strict height restrictions and isn’t suitable for those who don’t enjoy extreme thrills.

Silver Star is Europe’s tallest (73 meters) reaching speeds of 130 km/h. A B&M hyper-coaster specializing in height and speed without inversions, allowing pure sensations of free fall and extreme speeds. The ride begins with a slow two-minute climb to breathtaking views of the entire area, then a 67-meter free fall leaving your stomach behind. There are 4-5 additional smaller hills that could each be the main attraction at another park.

Blue Fire is suitable for those wanting to experience inversions smoothly and relatively comfortably. Mack Rides’ advanced technology ensures smooth riding even through the most complex inversions, and the magnetic launch adds adrenaline without being too aggressive. This is the perfect roller coaster for advancing from family attractions to the next level.

Wodan offers the classic wooden coaster experience with modern technology. The track winds through the nearby forest, crosses itself multiple times, and includes special effects combining technological elements with traditional sensations. The familiar noise and vibrations of wooden coasters are combined here with modern safety and comfort.

Water and Aquatic Attractions

Poseidon in the Greek area offers a unique water coaster experience with roller coaster elements. The attraction begins with mythological description of storms in ancient Greece’s depths, passes through caves, and suddenly develops into a real adventure with an especially steep 18-meter drop. The combination of mythological elements, water effects, and adrenaline makes this perfect for hot summer days.

Atlantica SuperSplash in Portugal is the park’s most extreme water attraction. The crazy 30-meter drop at 80 km/h speed guarantees not only complete soaking but a real free-fall experience. The attraction usually opens only during summer season and is recommended only for those prepared with change of clothes.

Europa Park in Germany

Must-Do Family Attractions

Arthur in Miniatur Wunderland offers a family roller coaster with indoor and outdoor sections, spectacular design, and exceptional detail. The attraction begins in dark tunnels full of movie scenes with detailed animatronic characters and quality surround sound. Then the coaster goes outside for real adventure with speeds and sharp turns, making it perfect for transitioning between children’s attractions and real roller coasters. The detail level here competes with Disney parks, with giant artificial vegetation creating a real fairy world sizing sensation.

Pirates in Batavia is essential for every visitor, regardless of age. The execution quality, detail, and effects are at the level of the best Disney parks. The attraction includes over 40 animatronic figures, 6 different main scenes, and unique scent effects changing in each section. The 15-minute journey is long enough to develop emotional connection to the story and detailed enough to discover new details on each ride.

Voletarium in the German area offers a giant screen experience with moving seats taking you on a flight over European landscapes. The attraction combines very high-quality video with physical effects like wind, scents, and seat movements. The flight over Switzerland is accompanied by mountain scents, the Netherlands section by flower scents, and the Germany flight by forest and traditional food scents.

Special Experiences and Shows

The park offers a variety of professional ice skating shows at the ice stadium in Greece, featuring world-class skaters, complex choreography, and changing storylines. Shows take place several times daily and are included in admission price. The stadium acoustics are excellent with seating for about 1,000 spectators.

Theatrical shows at Europa-Park Theater include professional magicians, acrobatics, and magic shows. The current golden anniversary show includes a review of the park’s 50 years with moving performances and special effects.

Meanwhile, Spanish shows at the amphitheater include impressive horse riding performances, flamenco dancing, and acrobatics accompanied by traditional Spanish music. “The Sultan’s Return” is a professional stunt show with mounted acrobatics, sword fights, and fire effects.

The 4D cinema in the French area shows exclusive Europa-Park films with wind, water, and scent effects. The current film “Chaos in Wonderland” is an original adventure of park characters, with rotating films throughout the year.

Practical Information for Planning the Perfect Visit

Advanced Timing and Strategies for Europa-Park Visit

A two-day visit is the recommended minimum for a complete, pressure-free experience, as the park is enormous and offers so many attractions, shows, and hidden corners that less than one day simply isn’t enough to experience everything comfortably. On busy days like weekends and school holidays, wait times can be long, especially for popular attractions like Voltron, Blue Fire, and Silver Star, while January-February are the quietest months with virtually one-minute waits for almost every attraction.

To plan your visit efficiently, the park’s official app is essential. It displays real-time wait times, detailed maps with GPS navigation, and allows booking virtual queues at no extra charge for the most popular attractions. Virtual queues are available for Voltron, Pirates in Batavia, Voletarium, and more, allowing you to explore other areas instead of standing in line.

Recommended first-day strategy: Arrive at opening (usually 9:00 AM in summer, 11:00 AM in winter), go directly to Iceland for Blue Fire and Wodan with shorter wait times, then move to Croatia for Voltron (or book virtual queue), eat in quieter areas with family attractions, and end the day in France or Italy with shows.

Special Restaurants Worth Knowing:

Food Loop in Luxembourg is a unique experience – a restaurant where food arrives at your table via a 400-meter roller coaster track. Bamboo Bay in Netherlands offers Asian cuisine with a view of the Pirates attraction. Prices are similar to Food Loop, but the atmosphere is more romantic. The French restaurant at Balthasar Castle is the most luxurious with prices of 40-60 euros per meal, but the experience of dining in a 15th-century castle is unique.

In Spain, restaurants specialize in authentic tapas and paella.

Special Events and Different Seasons

Halloween Season – Traumatica

In October, the park transforms into a terrifying horror experience with “Traumatica” – an event for adults ages 16+ only. The event includes 8 additional haunted houses scattered throughout the park, over 200 frightening actors, and dark, scary atmosphere. Regular attractions continue operating but with dark lighting and frightening sound effects. Haunted houses include “House of Kitchen,” “Swamp Prisoners,” and “Evil Spirit,” plus other extreme experiences with 16+ minimum age. Admission prices are higher (85-95 euros) and capacity is limited to 25,000 visitors per night to maintain quality. The event takes place only on October weekends, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM.

Winter Season and Celebrations

From mid-November through early January, the park becomes “Winter Wonderland” with spectacular Christmas decorations including millions of LED lights, giant Christmas trees in every area, and magical authentic European Christmas atmosphere. Each area showcases the holiday customs of the appropriate country. Winter markets include additional carousels, hot mulled wine, gingerbread and baked goods, and especially magical atmosphere in the winter wonderland. Some attractions close due to weather (mainly water attractions), but indoor shows and many coasters continue operating.

Weekly European Festivals

Every weekend, a festival dedicated to a different European country takes place, with special food, shows, artists, and authentic cultural experiences. The Dutch festival includes a street full of cheese shops, flower stands, and small windmills. The French festival brings wine tastings, cabarets, and street performances. Each festival runs Friday through Sunday and includes unique cultural activities impossible to find at other times: professional chefs, original music, street performances, and interactive activities. Festival admission is included in regular admission price.

Europa Park in Germany

User Insights and Important Tips

The park is exceptionally dog-friendly – you can bring pets to all open areas and most light attractions. There are special rest areas for dogs, water bowls, and even pet-friendly restaurants. Accessibility is very good for wheelchair users at most attractions, with convenient elevators and ramps everywhere.

Service quality is very high, with professional, polite, multilingual staff. Most employees speak German, English, and French, with some also speaking Italian and Spanish. The attitude is warm and personal, with staff genuinely wanting you to enjoy your visit.

Disadvantages Worth Knowing in Advance: Smoking is allowed in most open areas and terraces, which can be disturbing for families with young children or sensitive individuals. Signage is mostly in German only, despite the app being available in multiple languages. Navigation can sometimes be confusing due to the park’s enormous size and winding paths between areas.

Souvenir prices are relatively high (6.50 euros for attraction photo, 35 euros for small Voltron model), but quality is very good. Park shops offer quality Lindt chocolate at better prices than regular stores, worth taking advantage of.

Europa Park in Germany

Guide for Optimal Visit

Advance Preparation

  • Download the app before arrival and familiarize yourself with the park map
  • Plan in advance which attractions are most important to you and which areas to focus on
  • Create a short “must-do” list (maximum 5-7 attractions per day) and don’t try to do everything

Morning Strategy

  • Arrive at opening or 15 minutes before. Gates usually open 30 minutes before official opening, allowing access to popular attractions while still empty
  • Focus first on major roller coasters (Voltron, Silver Star, Blue Fire) when waits are still short

Updated Opening Hours for 2025-2026 Season

  • Summer and Halloween season: Daily from 9:00 AM to at least 6:00 PM
  • HALLOWinter and winter season: Daily from 11:00 AM to at least 7:00 PM
  • Closed: December 24-25, 2025
  • Early opening: March 15, 2025 (week before official opening)

Midday Strategy

After 11:00 AM, crowds begin growing and lines lengthen. This is perfect time for family attractions, shows (often with short waits), and quieter areas. Recommended to eat early lunch (11:30 AM-12:00 PM) or late (2:00-3:00 PM) to avoid crowds.

Evening Strategy

From 4:00 PM, crowds begin thinning and lines shorten again. This is perfect time to return to attractions you missed in the morning or repeat favorite items. Hours 5:00-7:00 PM are ideal for photography with soft lighting and magical atmosphere.

Visit with Young Children

Focus on age-appropriate areas – Minimoys Kingdom is perfect for ages 3-8, Italy and Netherlands are great for families, and the German area offers calmer attractions. The Panorama Train and monorail provide pleasant breaks with beautiful views, allowing rest and planning next steps.

Visit with Teenagers

Focus on extreme roller coasters, water attractions in summer, and interactive experiences. Don’t miss the shows – they’re high professional level and not “childish” like in other parks.

Europa-Park successfully combines the best of all worlds: technical and execution quality at Disney level or even better, variety and extremes at Universal Parks level, fair pricing not found in major world parks, and warm, professional European personal service hard to find elsewhere. Attention to small details – from different music in each area to special scents in every attraction, high service level that doesn’t compromise on quality, and diverse experience truly suitable for all visitor types make this place truly special.
