The Amphitheatre of Arles is one of the most impressive and best-preserved Roman buildings in Europe, standing proudly in the heart of Arles, France. Built in 90 AD, this ancient architectural marvel has served many roles over the centuries, from gladiatorial arena to medieval fortress to modern-day event venue. Here is your guide to getting the most out of this iconic monument.

Must-see Features

Architectural Splendor
Modeled after the Roman Colosseum, the amphitheater boasts stunning Doric and Corinthian arches. At 136 meters long and 107 meters wide, its height is a testament to the technical prowess of the Roman Empire.

View from the Top
Climb to the top floor for a picturesque panorama of the city, including the rooftops of Arles and the fields of the Camargue in the distance.

A Historical Journey
Inside, you can see the remains of a trapdoor and part of the original seating layout. With 33 rows of bleachers, the arena could accommodate up to 20,000 spectators who came to watch gladiatorial fights and other spectacles. The amphitheater also served as a fortress for centuries, housing as many as 200 homes within its walls during the Middle Ages.

When to Visit and What to Bring

Timing
Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and to ensure good lighting for photography. Spring and fall are ideal times to explore, with milder temperatures.

Accessibility
The ground area is accessible, but the amphitheater’s narrow, steep stairs may make the upper levels challenging for visitors with limited mobility.

Comfort Tips
With its tight stone seating and steep stairs, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. During the hot summer months, bring a hat and water to stay cool, as the ancient stone buildings absorb heat.
