Part of the Relance Islands off the coast of Cannes, Sainte-Marguerite is a tranquil paradise offering a blend of historical intrigue, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure. A short ferry ride from the bustling French Riviera, this idyllic island is the perfect day-trip destination for those seeking a peaceful escape surrounded by Mediterranean scenery and fascinating history. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit to Sainte-Marguerite, from must-see attractions to practical travel tips.

What to See and Do at Sainte-Marguerite

The Legend of Fort Royal and the Iron Mask

One of the most famous landmarks on the island is Fort Royal, a 17th-century fortress that once served as both a prison and a military base. The fort is best known for its connection to the mysterious “Man in the Iron Mask.” According to legend, the man was imprisoned here during the reign of Louis XIV. Theories about his identity range from him being the twin brother of the king to a high-ranking official who was punished for treason.

Visitors can tour the fort and see the cells that once held the prisoner in the iron mask. The museum inside the fort houses a variety of marine artifacts, including objects recovered from shipwrecks around the island, providing insight into its history. The fort also has a lovely chapel, and the terrace offers panoramic views of Cannes and the surrounding area.

Museum of the Sea (Musée de la Mer)

Located within Fort Royal, the Museum of the Sea is a must-see for history buffs. This small yet fascinating museum showcases archaeological finds from the surrounding waters, including ancient shipwrecks and underwater artifacts. One of the highlights is a collection of paintings depicting life on the island and the fort’s role in French history.

Hiking Trails and Natural Beauty

Sainte-Marguerite is a dream for nature lovers, with more than 21 km of trails winding through lush forest areas. The most popular trails are coastal routes that run along the island’s shores and offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Hikers can enjoy the diverse range of plant species, including stone pines and eucalyptus, as well as a variety of seabirds.

For those interested in bird watching, a visit to Lake Batéguier is a must. The lake is a designated bird sanctuary home to species such as gulls, herons, and terns. The observation deck above the lake provides a peaceful setting for spotting local wildlife—an ideal place to rest during your hike.

Underwater Art: The First Underwater Eco-Museum in France

A truly unique experience at Sainte-Marguerite is the opportunity to explore the Underwater Eco-Museum by Jason de Caires Taylor. Located 3–5 meters below the water’s surface, the Eco-Museum features six large sculptures that serve both as art and environmental projects. Snorkelers and divers can see a statue dedicated to the mysterious “Man in the Iron Mask.” This installation not only adds a cultural touch to the island but also promotes environmental awareness by protecting marine life.

Practical Tips for Visiting Sainte-Marguerite

When to Visit

Sainte-Marguerite is a year-round destination, but the best times to visit are in the spring and summer (April to October). The weather is warm, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and snorkeling. If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the off-season (November to March). During the summer peak, the island can get busier, so it’s important to plan ahead, especially for accommodation and ferry schedules.

What to Bring

Since Sainte-Marguerite is primarily a nature reserve, comfortable hiking shoes are essential. If you plan to swim or snorkel, don’t forget your swimsuit and snorkeling gear. The island has limited places to buy snacks, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring your own food for a picnic or stop by one of the island’s two snack bars. Garbage disposal is limited, so be sure to take your waste with you.

How to Spend Your Time

A visit to the island can be comfortably completed in one day. Recommended itineraries include a visit to Fort Royal to learn about the iron mask, followed by a hike along scenic coastal trails. After a break at Lake Batéguier for bird watching, finish the day with a relaxing swim and snorkeling session at the Underwater Eco-Museum.
