Expert Tips

Emily Parker

Plan Australia by regions, not by a list of cities – the distance along just the east coast (Melbourne–Cairns) is around 4,000 km. In 10–14 days, it’s realistic to choose only 1–2 regions (e.g., Sydney + Gold Coast or Cairns + Reef) instead of trying to cover the whole country.

Climate depends on latitude, not calendar months – in the south, summer (Dec–Feb) is hot and dry, while in the north it’s the wet season with tropical rains. In winter (Jun–Aug), Sydney is cool (+15 °C), while Cairns is perfect for the Reef and rainforests.

Australian beaches are beautiful – but also dangerous – it’s safe to swim only between the red-and-yellow flags. Outside them, there are rip currents that even strong swimmers can’t escape. In tropical Queensland and the Northern Territory, there is a stinger (jellyfish) season, and crocodiles may be present in mangrove areas

Driving in rural Australia is more like an expedition – outside the cities, roads are often unsealed, rocky or sandy, and require a 4WD. At dusk and after dark, kangaroos, emus, cows, and wild animals often jump onto the road, so locals avoid driving at night.

Alcohol laws vary by state – you can’t drink wherever you want – in many parks, beaches and waterfront areas, drinking alcohol is banned and fined on the spot. Alcohol is usually sold only in bottle shops, not in supermarkets, with restricted hours depending on the state.
